HENRY'S PLANETARY PROJECT

+ Earlier this year (2026) my son (11 year's old) decided to do a project at home creating planets for a solar system project. His current passion is ALL about the planets, their moons and the stars. He was given a basic telescope and has children's binoculars but it allows him a better view of the moon then our eyes.

+ He created the individual planets with masking tape (and to be honest I am not entirely sure what else he used in that process, except lots and lots of masking tape. Could be tissues, foam/fluff, no idea. We were originally going to buy foam balls to paint on for the planets but Henry could not wait for the school holidays for that. Understandably.

+ Then we sat down together to discuss ways to display the planets in his bedroom drawing up some plans. In the end we agreed on utilising his desk for the display which took the project in another direction to paint up some appropriate backgrounds.

+ I helped show Henry how to paint star-scapes using new techniques he had never tried before with acrylic paints and various brushes. Creating these backgrounds was actually quite relaxing and fun. Firstly we had to use sponges to paint the background black then let them dry.

+ The backgrounds were them double-sided taped to his desk to help make the planets pop and seem more realistic.

+ The planets were strung up with Nylon-wire and wire wrapped because nothing seemed to poke through the masterfully wrapped masking tape. There are tiny hooks (also double-sided) taped under the desk shelf top and sides which the planets are attached to.

+ The rings were created by him, he drew them on paper and cut them out himself.

+ Oh and the Sun is made from scrunched up crafting paper and minimal tape.

His next BIG IDEA Project is to build a telescope, but he says this one will take him many years to complete.
