A Lovely Encounter

Hi guys!
This is my entry for a contest hosted by :iconfoxytales:

Since the theme was "Enchanted Wilderness", I chose to paint some kind of naive, fairytale-like forest. The scene depicts a fox cub being bold enough to explore its surroundings, something that led it to meet its first, yet most unexpected friend... a mouse! :D Since foxes feed on rodents, such a bond would be, of course, very strange and unlikely to happen, but it's a fairytale scene so it's not a big deal :)

About the picture:
Dammit. I just finished it 21 hours before the (already extended) deadline! Exhausted - NaNoEmo Day 28
Such a delay was not supposed to happen, since I had blocked the shapes and colors very early - as soon as I heard of the contest, on March 23 exactly. But I struggled with the faraway trees at one point, and this deterred me from going on for almost 3 weeks. I eventually picked it again and found a way to do the said trees (now I like this version much better).

I'm quite satisfied of this picture anyway ^^ Apart from the faraway trees, everything flowed very well and it was nice to paint.
The thing I like the most is the river: it was the coolest part to do because I never did such kind of waterscape and, since I couldn't find any good reference of similar-looking rivers and small waterfalls, I had to rely on my imagination only. As a result, the river looks more "magical" than realistic - but it was the effet I was aiming for.
The whole picture actually looks unrealistic (for everything here is very neat and simplified, while a forest should be rough and messy). But, once again, the pic is meant to lean much more towards fantasy and "good old fairytales" than realism. I would actually love to paint some scenes of the same kind to illustrate children books

Such a beautiful piece. I like how you were able to make the far-away trees (I read that they gave you trouble, but I'm glad you got back to it. It adds so much depth!)

The sunlight and shadows are probably my favorite, though the river/waterfall is fantastic (you even have part of the river behind the fox family..?)

I really like the depth, and the texture of the fur (especially the tail of the closest fox and the tail cheeks of the farther-away foxes) are nice.

....and I just noticed the faces in the trees! Three of them? The one to the left of the far-away foxes root-branch looks almost as if she wants to pet/touch them, and the one closest to the foreground: I can almost see the torso/shoulders....

Now I'm curious to see if there is anything else I missed....

No problem. I like giving specifics because I like how it feels to receive specifics.

Nope, I think you spotted everything :) The three faces in the trees and the fishes in the pond are the only things that require a little observation.

Aw, how cute! The little fox family is adorable, and the little mousey on the lilly-pad is also adorable! Tho, I have to wonder how the mouse got to the lilly-pad in the first place. xD

Haha, thanks a lot for your nice comment!
(About the mouse-on-lily-pad thing, I don't even know myself. It's an enchanted forest, so I guess it's some kind of magic )

I can actually imagine this a part of a larger collection for children's books. It's got a style that is bold and colourful which I feel children can view and really get to enjoy. :D

Wow, thank you very much for your feedback! :D The children's books feel was something I was aiming for when painting this, so that's cool!
