This is my entry for a contest hosted by
Since the theme was "Enchanted Wilderness", I chose to paint some kind of naive, fairytale-like forest. The scene depicts a fox cub being bold enough to explore its surroundings, something that led it to meet its first, yet most unexpected friend... a mouse!
Since foxes feed on rodents, such a bond would be, of course, very strange and unlikely to happen, but it's a fairytale scene so it's not a big deal About the picture:
Dammit. I just finished it 21 hours before the (already extended) deadline!
Such a delay was not supposed to happen, since I had blocked the shapes and colors very early - as soon as I heard of the contest, on March 23 exactly. But I struggled with the faraway trees at one point, and this deterred me from going on for almost 3 weeks. I eventually picked it again and found a way to do the said trees (now I like this version much better).
I'm quite satisfied of this picture anyway ^^ Apart from the faraway trees, everything flowed very well and it was nice to paint.
The thing I like the most is the river: it was the coolest part to do because I never did such kind of waterscape and, since I couldn't find any good reference of similar-looking rivers and small waterfalls, I had to rely on my imagination only. As a result, the river looks more "magical" than realistic - but it was the effet I was aiming for.
The whole picture actually looks unrealistic (for everything here is very neat and simplified, while a forest should be rough and messy). But, once again, the pic is meant to lean much more towards fantasy and "good old fairytales" than realism. I would actually love to paint some scenes of the same kind to illustrate children books Other works:
