The problem with fanart

I was browsing doujinshi at Suruga-ya this evening, when this one caught my eye-- not just because Reno was on the cover, but also because it reminded me, almost immediately, of this deviation. The resemblance was too close for comfort, and I've since removed the latter from my Favourites, where it had been for years. And no, I didn't report it, since you know as well as I do that dA doesn't care about this sort of copying/tracing/plagiarism.
It's so hard to tell sometimes what's copied and what isn't; it's somewhat frustrating.
Stuff like this is why I'm wary of faving fanart by people I don't know, at least as acquaintances. It's also one
