  Chapter 2: Iono Feria
Standing on one of Zebes’ canyon floors, I leaned to the left, my left hand’s fingers finding their place on the barrel of the arm cannon. Old Bird, Gray Voice and Pyonchi watched from a safe distance away, since I had accidentally attacked nearby objects in the past. The mechanical training equipment, designed to act somewhat like the crab-like Space Pirates, was moving to my right, so I sidestepped as I fired. The laser beam went off target, hitting the base of a nearby rock.
“<Samus, if you move while you shoot, nothing can guarantee you’ll hit your target, >”
Old Bird said, as he and Pyonchi walked up to me.
“<The Power Suit can’t think for you. You’re fourteen now, you should know that.>”
“<Then what is it good for?!>” I shouted in frustration, my suit disappearing. I had been losing my concentration easily, and I directed my frustration at the suit.
“<You know very well what it’s good for. If you don’t learn to use it right, who will protect the Federation?>” Gray Voice reprimanded me.
Pyonchi hopped up onto my shoulder, and I leaped up to a nearby rock, using the training equipment as a platform. Over time, my athletic skills had improved enough that I could jump an over twenty foot gap.
The Chozo consider me one of them, but they did push me so hard. Sometimes they would forget I’m mostly human. Like when Gray Voice wanted me to swim in acid…
I sat down on a rock overlooking a valley of purple flowers. It was one of the few non-barren areas on the surface of Zebes. A large, faintly glowing butterfly-like creature landed next to my dropped water bottle and startled Pyonchi, making him squeak in surprise and causing me to look over towards it. I had seen many of the creatures of Zebes, but I couldn’t identify this one. Old Bird stood near me. Noticing my interest in the butterfly-like creature, he told me what it was.
“<That is an Iono Feria. They use moisture ions as energy.>”
“<Isn’t pretty enough?>” I looked off towards the flowers again.
“<Won’t you come inside?>” Old Bird asked.
I didn’t answer. After he had left, I walked to our house and brought two sacks full of bottles back to the valley.
“< I brought some juice for my friends! >”
The Iono Feria clustered around the jugs, glowing brighter as they drank. I picked a few of the flowers and left for home.
Gray Voice might like these, I thought.
I held out the flowers to him, but instead of accepting my gift, he jumped away and ordered the training robots to incinerate the blooms.
“<Those flowers are from another planet! They’re horribly poisonous, at best! Where did you find them?>” he exclaimed, his olive-green crest of feathers laying flat in surprise.
Just then, the AI, Mother Brain as we called her, reported that the Iono Feria had become hostile. Sure enough, when I ran outside, they dashed towards us carrying small blaster weapons.
Now I had a true reason to use the suit. I concentrated harder than ever, willing the suit to appear.
I can’t fail now.  One of the Iono Feria’s blasts nearly hit me, but I wouldn’t be distracted. A moment later, the suit reactivated. I moved to cover Gray Voice.
 “<Fire at me instead!>”
“<Attack them!>” Gray Voice shouted to me.
 “<Why? >” I asked. “< They weren’t dangerous before!>”
I avoided their shots. Instead of trying to harm the creatures themselves, I fired at their weapons, knocking them out of the creatures’ grasp. Resting my fingers on the barrel of my arm cannon, I fired several shots at the scattered weapons, destroying them. I left before Gray Voice could object to what I had done, but I still saw the flowers burning and heard the order from Mother Brain’s robot eye to destroy the creatures that had gone insane.
The next morning, Old Bird approached me from where I sat on top of the building complex.
   “<You’ve grown.>” he said.
 I looked up at him.
“<When we first brought you here, do you know what you said?>”
“<I’m not sure.>” I looked out over Chozodia.
“<You promised you would be strong like me. You kept that promise yesterday, when you spared the Iono Feria. I know the Federation would recruit you. If you want, I’ll take you to Daiban to see.>”
I nodded. A Federation soldier? That would be a way to do what I have been working towards…
The next day, I left Pyonchi in Gray Voice’s care and prepared to train at the capital.
