It was August 2002 or 2003....I can't remember, but there was this HUGE power outage that hit a big chunk of Ontario, Quebec, and parts of New York I think. I was without power for three days. It was actually kinda fun, to be honest. It was nice to be able to see a starlit sky at night.
I don't think I have ever experienced a power outage lasting more than a day. Grew up in the countryside; the rural power company in our area would usually fix things up fairly quickly after any major severe weather events.
Since moving to the suburbs, I haven't really experienced anything significant enough to knock the power out for a week.
Earlier this summer we had a blackout in my part of the grid that lasted an hour and a half. I had to get out of the house until the power came back to suppress my Internet cravings. Quite pathetic, isn't it?
On purpose, a two week wilderness backpacking trip. Not my idea, three days in a winter storm. But we are lucky - we still have gas, and an old stove and water heater that are NOT dependent on power - we can still have hot baths and stovetop meals. I want to get a good solar charger to keep some electronics going. I did find an awesome battery operated fan for when the grid goes down in summer!
Oh, It was. We lost all the food in refrigerator and freezer. Plus, You couldn't grill out because it was frozen over. I will tell you this I will never look at spaghetti-o's and canned beans the same way again. XD We survived off them for 2 days because we could not get out the front door. It was the worst ice storm I've been through and I've gone through 4 of them.
Back then that would sound like a 4 course meal. Well, We have no backup generator. So, Mostly a small propane heater that would only keep one room "warm" maybe only 60 degrees and a lot of blankets. We didn't have it as bad as many people around here. Most of them didn't have power for over a week.
it was hard..good thing it wasn't winter!!! power is still out for some..its so bad where some people live..trees are all over the place. they said on the news that crews from the U.S.A have even came up to help..such great neighbours!!
Well, if you're talking natural disaster I'd say we went without power once for about a week. In January. But that was a long time ago. Now, if you're taking about the vagaries and the whims of youth--I lived off the grid for about a year when I was in my twenties. I hauled water and split wood for heat and to cook with. Ate a lot of burnt offerings for a while! Wasn't all that bad, didn't miss television at all, but I don't want a return to those days
I feel bad for me too! That said, this year, although hot, (as summer's tend to be) still it's not as bad as last year by a long shot! We had so many days last year with 106 degree temps combined with your awful humidity; even at night there was no relief. July and August being the worst. This year, we've had temps at night not yet exceeding 70 degrees, but usually around 60 - which is pretty darned unusual for July! Hope August is the same - but probably not! The break is nice though.
it gets hot here but not that hot! when the power was out we did get a couple of days when the temps were 9 and 11c..chilly!! right now we are supposed to be having thunderstorms..still nothing yet, I guess you cant predict the weather anymore!
