Here's the Majora's Mask variant of the Kokiri Sword. Also, the height of the image being 1337 is purely an accident.

I like to think that after Ocarina of Times ending, Link matured and realized that being an adventurer and a hero would be more dangerous than he thought, so he changed his sword a bit. A wooden hilt is generally not too good for a sword (except the handle) so to prevent the hilt breaking on him and possibly giving better balance, he had a blacksmith change the hilt on the sword and get the Hero's Shield in the time gap between Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

In my experience, a wooden hilt wouldn't last long in a lot of environments, especially for an adventurer. It's possible that after Link finished his journey in OoT, he upgraded the sword with a metal hilt to make it more durable and last longer, which may also be why he carries a metal shield instead of the Deku Shield.
