Syd the Sour: Side Mouth by BlazeTBW Syd the Sour: Side Mouth by BlazeTBW
Tumblr post: blazetbw-art.tumblr.com/post/1…

Here have another strip, that later became connected to this other single panel thing: blazetbw.deviantart.com/art/Sy…

I'm not against people drawing a side mouth. Though there's more than a few several times that it makes things look more off in my preference.

It's been tempting a few times to say the least lol. But it's easier just to draw it however I want~

So this must be a reference to the very first Sonic the Hedgehog show?
Also, why did your character insult Amy's mental capabilities? O-o

Your first question is answered in the comments here: comments.deviantart.com/1/5923…

The second question is answered in the description.

The short end is, my character can be a grumpy tart.

Ah, I see. Actually, I've seen the drawing you linked to in your description before. I remember coming across it once.
Poor Amy..

On the bright side, Sonic Boom actually DOES have character have normal mouths instead of "side mouths". =P

I don't expect people to pay much mind to it honestly. It's been a staple of the style since conception essentially, so most are probably indifferent to it, because most of the time it works.

There's just times where I don't agree with it myself and that's just a preference. Whether or not anyone else shares that is up to them.

Yeah. But I do understand it when they're facing forward.

Oh gosh, every Sonic character trophy in Smash has this problem.

(To be honest though, I've seen what full-front mouth looks like thanks to the fan-made live action Sonic film that was on Youtube, it looks freaky).

Yeah...I'll agree that looked pretty freaky. Could've used more time developing that.

Progress on how to implement the side mouth in official 3D stuff though has made better strides to say the least compared to earlier stuff that's for sure. It CAN work because camera angles are a bit of a driving thing for the scenes.

There's just times when I look at an image (official or not) and I'm like... "All that blank space on the face and the mouth is stuck in the corner?" Specifically when a mouth's open, talking or supposed to be emoting.

And I agree with Sonic here. When I first saw the Sonic Boom character models, in comparison, they seemed to have their mouths stuck in a constant duckface. lol

I never got the duckface thing honestly, but I guess it just never stood out to me as much as others.

For the sake of things though, my thing's more with examples like the Sonic Heroes cg cutscenes (granted that could be chalked up to limited ability at the time), Sonic X's style in various instances, probably some of the character images from the Advance series, and probably most of all, fan works (due to sheer abundance).

For in-game models, it wouldn't really have been until Sonic Unleashed that the side-mouth thing became more prevalent outside of the CG cutscenes. All the mouths were relatively centered, again, mostly due graphical limitations for the time.

While I understand that it is a style thing, there's times when I don't agree with it. It's easier for me to accept it on more rounded faces like Sonic, but harder for characters that go beyond that general shape like Tails and Knuckles. Especially when they have a more defined profile view where they could have more exaggerated expressions (imo) than just having their mouth pasted on the side of their face.

Again, just a preference, but I know people won't agree with me on this lol.
