The Terror of Mechagodzilla by BLARGEN69 The Terror of Mechagodzilla by BLARGEN69
You didn't think I would forget Godzilla's sixtieth anniversary did you?! NEVER, now it can be said, that one of the main reasons I didn't do Halloween drawings this year for every day of October is not only because I've been busy with life and making Episode 4, but mainly because I wanted to dedicate time to Godzilla this year, it's his special year. I have a lot of ideas for Godzilla related art I wanna make this month, but no there will not be a piece every day haha! I didn't know what order to upload these things in, so I decided I'm just gonna upload them randomly, if I uploaded them chronologically in order of their film's respective release then it takes the fun and surprise out of it right?!

So fellow kaiju fans keep your hopes up that one of your favorites will get drawn, but for now, we're starting with a tribute to Terror of Mechagodzilla, from 1975. At the time the final Godzilla film by Toho for nearly a decade until the reboot. It stands to date as one of my favorite Godzilla films, and definitely one of my favorite of the Showa era.

Looking back I notice I gravitated toward the Godzilla films that had the darkest plots to them as a child, Terror of Mechagodzilla is no exception, it's a really grim film especially for it's era. The character of Katsura, the girl in the front here is what makes it so, for those who aren't familiar with the film I'll sum it up. Basically this is a sequel to Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, all you really need to know from that film is a group of aliens invade earth with a robotic doppelganger of Godzilla, which Godzilla defeats. Terror of Mechagodzilla however has a far more engaging plot...

There once was a man named Dr. Mafune, a brilliant neuro-biologist, who was dedicated to the study of controlling animals through their brains. His studies and experiments were taboo and caused a great deal of controversy amongst the scientific community, however the final straw came when he discovered a living dinosaur in the bay he named Titanosaurus; a kind and friendly creature, his colleagues laughed at him for the claims, and he was shunned. Dr. Mafune went into hiding with his daughter Katsura, and he grew a deep hatred toward humanity for how they laughed at his cunning and genius. In their seclusion The doctor and Katsura perfected his mind-control technology and successfully managed to remotely control Titanosaurus, the Black Hole Aliens from the prior film, realize this could be a perfect way to upgrade Mechagodzilla. They begin to fund the estranged doctor's research privately as a means of getting close, then begin a string of subjugation. Firstly they have Katsura "accidentally" killed in a lab experiment, wherein she is immediately resurrected as a cyborg through their alien technology. The doctor now truly grateful is trusted with the knowledge of Mechagodzilla's ongoing repairs and upgrades. The doctor has grown so mad that he complies with the Black Hole Aliens and forms a team effort to take over the world through the combined forces of Mechagodzilla and Titanosaurus. Katsura is killed once again, and the aliens repair her once more, however this time linking her to Mechagodzilla, she controls him entirely now, and is almost entirely machine, the soul nearly entirely extinguished, Dr. Mafune blames himself for the loss of his only love in life but there's no turning back now. The Mechagodzilla 2 tag-team with Titanosaurus nearly defeats Godzilla, but Katsura breaks the control and in the arms of a man she fell in love with shoots herself in the head effectively rendering MechaGodzilla entirely useless, letting Godzilla smash it to pieces and save humanity once more. A happy ending for all but Mafune and Katsura.

Though not the best way to end off the Showa era it was definitely a good entry in the series. I've always found it interesting how it has similar themes and plot elements to another of one of my favorite Godzilla movies; Godzilla vs Biollante. Especially more-so when you consider that both of those movies had been the result of a contest where fans got to write their own plot for a Godzilla movie. But perhaps we'll talk about that film another day-

I love ToMG, it's one of my favorite Godzilla movies ever (namely for Godzilla's enterance when he prepares to fight Titanosaurus and MechaGodzilla and the scenes of destruction caused by MG and Titanosaurus)

Also I love the Katsura you drew, making her a Terminator- ish cyborg

Holy crap....I love those colors. I wasn't even thinking that you were connecting them with MG's eye lasers. I completely overlooked that lol. But I did notice the kickass silhouette of Titanosaurus in the background :)

The whole compositional layout is pretty awesome. I like the personal style you have done with MG's face and Katsura. This is just amazing man. Really damn good.

I'm glad you managed to catch the aspect of the rainbow fire eventually though, no one else has done so haha! Mechagodzilla has my favorite beams of any kaiju so there was no way I wouldn't incorporate the rainbow in here somehow. I made Titanosaurus a silhouette because it reflects what I've always loved about it as a character, that Dr. Mafune in his quest for revenge as well as eventual abuse by the hands of the Simians led to him forgetting the past he and Katsura shared with Titanosaurus and used it instead as nothing more than a tool.

Thank you so much man, I'm glad to hear from you I was hoping I'd get some from you. I hope you like the other stuff I have planned this month! Next one goes up probably, Monday or Tuesday, and it's another Showa era film.

I am sure they are all going to be better than my 60th Anniversary piece I uploaded. I ran out of time and just had to focus on directness and cleanness. Your illustration is telling a story and includes a ton of little Easter eggs in it. Stuff like that is what I love. I can't wait to see what you have lined up next.

I got some more stuff planned. I mean i have uploaded at least 1 piece a week for the last month in a half now...and that is a lot for me.

Though right now I'm just watching MST3K The Robot vs The Aztec Mummy...lol.

Thanks a lot!!! I'm glad to find fellow fans, especially of Titanosaurus, I dunno if it's the same for you but it's so hard for me to find fellow fans of him, everybody seems to think he's lame or annoying because of his noise haha!

I thought he looked cool, even if his roar sounded odd. Lol

He's definitely underrated and I wish he got more love (like Varan, Zone Fighter or Gorosaurus)

Holy cow, man, I love this Godzilla movie! :squee:

I happen to own several titles, and this one still stands out to me as one of my favorites among them. I like how you included Katsura, definitely one of the more dynamic characters the movie boasted of.

Gaaahh thank you thank you! I REALLY love making poster-like arrangements, I will not be surprised if a lot of these come out similar to this haha! As for the colors! Omg ome of the things that I love so much about the original Mechagodzilla is that he shoots rainbow laser beams from his eyes! Something I wish I could do... Regardless I HAD to get rainbows in here somehow!!!
