I'm on the hunt for a colorist for my creator-owned comic project I’m looking to release in 2014.  I’m hopeful I’ll find the right person for the job. THIS IS A  PAID Position. I am an independent, so I can pay about $35-$40 per page and that depends on skill and technique.

Anyway, here’s the quick skinny-

Stylistically, I’m looking for the following on this comic project:

• Clean cut light and shadow reminiscent of animation or cel-shade ( ie, udon or even skullkickers, etc, etc). This will require a solid understanding of light direction, cast shadows, and volume even though the coloring ‘cuts’ may look deceptively simple.

• Light effects created by coloring the line art itself and using solid highlights instead of a lot of airbrush/gradients over top of the line art. I’m not looking for a soft/fuzzy/rounded rendering style for this project.

Here are a few examples of the kind of style I looking for in my hunt for colorist for my creator-owned project.

It's time to finally pull the trigger and push out one of the multiple - and I do mean multiple - projects I have been working on for some time now. And that project is my own tshirt shop.

Simply put I have been wanting do something like this since my senior year of high school when my honor society asked me to design tshirts for the all of the students. It was such a big rush that after high school I would come up with dozens of designs and slogans. But I was broke and clueless of the design process. I did not have any clue on how to get them onto my computer let alone, color separation, pricing, printing, etc etc. Then came my love for comics, concept art and a plethora of the happy and awesome distractions that took up some time.

But my passion for this wouldn't die. Some time around the end of my college career I caught the bug for graphic design again. And my passion for tshirt design would often come back to the surface. Every so often I would sketch out an idea or create a mockup in Illustrator or Photoshop for the hell of it. I began building on ideas and drawing on inspiration from life as well as comics, music (Hip-Hop for the most part), artistic subcultures, and so much more.

As I began showing them off privately, my passion for this grew even stronger. Well, technology and the internet have finally caught up with my laziness and I can finally put my tshirts online the way I want to. So I am proud to say that:

Classic Blaques is open for business.

So I finally finished drawing the first issue of my project, but now I am faced with the dilemma of whether to start inking, coloring etc etc or continue to draw the next  issue/ chapter and make it a OGN.

This is one of those decision in which it is basically a win/ win for me. With my new processes and adopted ( Thank you Khary Randolph) and the  coloring technique I really want to use (Thank the Joe Vriens and Jogeetv) I am finding it easier pipeline to working on project.  However,  Seeing the pages develop and a nice stack sitting on on my lightbox.  I have had a serious urge to continue the working on more pages and just do them all at once.

This is a really, really tough decision of I have to make.  lol

Back from the first day of balti-con, and I must say sitting on the otherside of tables is an eye opening experience.  The pure amount of rejection one gets can be heartbreaking, However, if you are in for the long run most can brush that off and move on to the next one, which I had to do.

This one show, even though I got some sales and made some connection made want dig in harder and grind even more.

sorry for the mini-rant. but it was a long ride home.

...but I seem to be going through a crisis of an artist nature. I produce a a lot of works form illustration to graphic design, comic book art to web design,  T-shirt apparel design to  Vector illustrations concept art to 3d character models. So I have lot of work and in recent years I have been holding off on pushing any of it because I wanted to put it in an artbook.   But, it is increasingly hard on me to look at my art I have set aside for an artbook or a sketch book that is almost 2 years old and see good work or work that represent what I can do.

So my question, my queue is if you think one should hold showing the artwork to be shown exclusively in an art book or just put it out and if an art book comes up collect your best put it out. Don't worry about exclusivity and just be an artist.

Just something that is knocking around in my head.  I sitting here on  200 or so various art works for projects  that may or may not happen. I'd rather be see that than wait to see them if a book or two get out.

Oh by the way  watch out for the Fresh Fifteen.

I'm heated man really,I just found out the I am a victim of art theft. I am really trying to be calm and clearheaded about this situation, but this type of thing just does not sit well with me. I am not the kind of individual who handles this type of thing well. And on top of that it being SOLD in chain of major department stores. DAMN, DAMN, DAMN.

I gonna go find out what I can legally do about this shit. I just can't let this go.

First, of all it is a damn sketch they stole from something I did 2 years ago.  2 YEARS AGO.

Second, they pulled it off of web, which means it 72 DPI on a damn t-shirt.  Just looking at the thing makes me grind my teeth and I have not done the in the long time. The crap looks horrible.  Its blurry, faded looking and downright shitty.

Third, It some how now on someone else website. And I am not sure if someone sold it to that site or someone from that site stole it. So I am kinda at a loss there.

Forth, it is now in a (MAJOR) major department store chain being sold for 25 dollar. 25 DOLLARS. 25 Dollars a pop.

Fifth, it has characters that I do not legally own nor have I even tried to every make money off of. It was a damn sketch I did  in like 10 mins on the bus while coming home from work one day. I did it for fun, for practice and now its being sold because some movie is being made based on the property.

I was so having a good day until that happened.  It's been frustrating as hell because I am looking for a new job and the economy sucks, but then some shit like this has to happens and totally ruins my day even further. I was going to my first all you can eat place and pig  the hell out on the cheap. But, some how right before I get up to place my order my boy drops this in my lap and says,"here, check this out it reminded me of your work."

I was literally stunned when I saw what was,"really because thats mine, I m@@@@@ F@@@'@@ drew it.

"oh shit really" he says.

"yeah like 2 years ago is on my raw sketch art blog."

So after that I couldn't really eat I had like 8 slices of pizza and tried not to go postal with all those kiddies around. My boys had to calm me down and take my mind off this sketchy crap.

So in a nut shell that's is how my day went.

I am sorry if this is bit incoherent or a lot. I just had to vent.

I am good now, No I really am. No I am not.

I just want to say thanks to all those people who have checked out my works in order for me to get this point. I finally broke 10,000 hits, I know lot of people break that mark real easily, but I just think its kinda cool I did.  I was going to announce a Kiraban ( sp) but I reached the mark faster that I thought.  I wanted to do some large celibratory peice but that type of thing I just don't do much, its just not in me. Again, I just want to say thanks to all those who stopped by my little slice of DA and viewed my art.  I got so much more to show and I hope you all come back to see them all.

Thanks again.

Pencil and paper and there never will be but I am have so much fun with a program called artrage 2.0. its so much damn fun. I really love the way it recreate natural mediums and  various materials as well. And it rather inexpensive as well doesn't hurt either.

I kinda started a series of quick sketches on my sketch and scratches raw sketch blog sketchesandscratches.blogspot.… just to keep in practice and speed up my digital sketching and painting skills. I just have to have a whole lot more control than what I am used to.   But it is coming along nicely, I hope I can get better over time and even try some fully digital sequentials. That would be so odd to do but I would be kinda cool to try something ling that out.  But that is something that I may want to try with a cintiq.  But that is something for the future.

So check out the raw sketch blog its nothing special just way to show off the little known but for me the best part of a piece.  sketchesandscratches.blogspot.…

I am slowly but surely thinking about traveling down some new avenues of artistic interest. Things I once scoffed at now seem pretty cool and worth playing around with at least for a short time period.  I am by no means going away from my current interest and loves. I just want to branch out and see what happen with some idea I have.

For some time now I have been playing around with the idea of vinyl figures.  Ever since my senior art exhibition I have been chomping at the bit to do few of them for my self at least.  I really like going through the whole process. from rough concept to final product I don't want to skip any steps. It fascinating to me to see something like that come to life. I feel same way when  I create a piece in 3D.

The next avenue in t-shirts.  I am by no means trying to be a fashion designer.  I no desire to be one.  but I have truly seen some amazing design on t-shirts lately. And  want to try my hand at them. I have not desire to do designs with skulls on them.  For some reason I find that cliche and rather boring.  There are some really amazing designs out there and then there are some really boring designs that look like a  six year old did them.

So in coming days, weeks and months I will hopefully be able to throw some new art work up from then two new avenues to get some feed back.

Keep grinding.
