I know what you mean. In this case there was a solid fence between me and the lynx though, so there really was no danger involved. This photo was taken in a wildlife park that offers photographers the chance to photograph the animals through specially constructed "photo holes" in the fence, they also feed the animals close by so that you can get good shots while they're there eating. It's a quite common method to safely photograph wild animals. Or you can (like I did here) join the free tours that the park offer during the regular feeding time and try to get a lucky shot between the chain links in the fence. Sometimes that works too!
