One of 38 banners I've done for my wife's Etsy shop called Life In The Past Laine (www.etsy.com/shop/LifeInThePas…).
She originally had a stock banner that was a different aspect ration than what Etsy uses. It was therefore distorted and ugly. I offered to do a custom banner, and we came up with this concept.
We decided to change it every so often hoping someone would notice and it might draw customers back often just to see what had changed (and maybe look at her new items). What I didn't realize is how complex this would become. There are display cases inside the shop full of props as well as people. On the sidewalk are always different tableaus (as here the family, car, fountain, and hot dog vendor).
It was taking me longer and longer to create, and render times were LONG. So I decided to create billboards of everything that was not the actual shop. For people, I would create several billboards from different angles so I could show people walking to or from the shop or in and out. Now the fully loaded scene only takes a few minutes to render.
So everything you see here except the shop, sidewalk, and road are 2D billboards. I have a hidden G3M figure hidden and use him as a dummy to scale the people billboards. Even the display cases inside are billboards (these were the hardest to scale and position correctly). If you want to really reduce your render time and have object or people you don't need great detail of, use billboards! There are lots available at Daz3d.
