The Bolt Award
This year marks the introduction of something new. An award, or more accurately a recognition of achievement that goes above and beyond the normal call of duty.
This will be given out a mere once per year, every August 7th on the Birthday of the site.
What are the criteria for this award?
For contributions to the site that have had a massive impact on it and have caused things to change that affect every single one of us whether we know it or not.
Why then is it called "The Bolt"?
This is in honor of its first recipient, someone who goes very unnoticed and quietly has kept the backbone of this beast firmly in place during all sorts of hell and high water.
This individual would be none other than the coding tour de force known as $Chris Bolt who has been writing code for us since before day one.

11th August Toronto devMEET
It's been a while since Toronto has been able to host its own devMEET. In the past couple of years, we've had Hamilton, Grimsby & Niagara Falls devMEETs, but no one has had the time to host a Toronto devMEET it seems. [Minus a mini-meet arthaus hosted at the Eaton Centre before Christmas 2006]
That's where I came in; with me moving to Toronto, I wanted to try to bring back the deviantART spirit to Toronto deviants by finally hosting another devMEET in this great city.. Which we all know is the centre of the universe!
This will be the first of a couple devMEETs that I will try to host before summer ends. I want to try to get another one closer to the end of August, and I of course will keep you updated. If that isn't possible, we'll have one in the beginning of September, fingers crossed!
The devMEET will be hosted at beautiful High Park. Meeting time will be 12pm at High Park subway station, and we will then proceed to the park. We'll be at the station for a half hour up to an hou

Not out of the woods: A silent epidemic persists
As many of you know, I have struggled with lyme disease for a long time, having been in remission from chronic late stage Lyme and recently relapsing. I have decided at long last to make a concerted effort to spread the word about the disease in the best way I know how: bitching online!
I'm going to give you the skinny on this nasty bug, as well as point you in the direction of more thorough, official information on the topic should you wish to learn more.
Lyme was only discovered in 1975 and was named for Lyme, Connecticut where a cluster outbreak was found and the disease is said to have "been discovered." The truth of the matter is that it's likely some form of Lyme disease (or Borreliosis as it is scientifically known) has existed for some time. It is in the same family of bacteria as syphilis, known as spirochetes and identifiable by their corkscrew shape. This cute little slinky of a microbe can be deadly, in part due to its screw-like form which renders it skilled at tunneling i

Skin a Scion Contest - One Month Left!

We have made some minor rules revisions so please take a look at the rules section and the official rules page!

The Cars

Scion emerged on the automotive scene as a division of Toyota in 2003 and immediately began grabbing attention as being something unique in the automotive world. They offered cars at extremely affordable prices but with a unique style to them and an unprecedented amount of customizable options direct form the factory. Over the last 4 years they have expanded on this and treat their vehicles like rolling works of art adding more and more ways for you to modify them without breaking your bank account.

back to a tick

back to a tick

As of today I'm no longer on deviantART staff. It's a real shame, but I really just haven't had the time to split between my studies, my job and my duties here. To be honest, I really should have stepped down before now - what with my final year of university coming up i'm going to have even less time.

This is kind of a big deal to me; I've been on deviantART staff since the end of 2003 and I've done a few things: gallery director, contest director, message network admin, and they've all been great fun. Some of the great people I've had the pleasure to work with:

karyaazure and loads more, especially the MN@

On that note, the MN@, and indeed, the staff in general, do a fantastic job and have never deserved even a fraction of the hassle I've seen them receive over the years. There's a reason dA has survived so long. :aww:

I'm not leaving dA - it's such a part of my life I couldn't, really - but in line with my lack of recent activity I'll probably be around less. Either that, or I'll suddenly develop a rekindled addiction to the site. It could go either way. :)

cardiff devMeet

Last weekend I went to maxwell-heza's cardiff devmeet and had a fantastic time. Met some new people, met some old people, got very drunk and I'd do it all again in a flash. Looking forward to the next one. :)

Also, I'd like to go on record and say that I absolutely love my housemate, Kalfireth. Furthermore, I'll hopefully know better than to log myself into DA on his machine and not take the time to log myself out afterwards. Whoops!

(P.P.S.: Sorry mate!, Love Alex)

United Kingdom
This is all out of date, so sorry about that.

On deviantART, I'm a Message Network Administrator (MN@). We work under fourteenthstar to keep dAmn at least moderately sane. I also select Daily Deviations - I focus on the Pixel Art section and occasionally ANSI art (my previous role was a GD for Pixel Art).

I have been responsible for organising the first and third 'official' deviantART UK meets; both in London. Feel free to contact me with any ideas for meets or other deviantART related activities in the UK, I'll probably be happy to help out. I run the britain account to help UK deviants find and organise meets in their area - i publicise upcoming meets in the journal.

I am also the co-founder and operator of, the UK channel on the deviantART IRC network, and #britain on dAmn, a channel for British deviants on dA and discussing meets. Pop into one of them some time!

In the world outside deviantART, I'm a student at Portsmouth University in the UK currently studying a degree in Digital Media.
