The spark by Black-Chimaera The spark by Black-Chimaera
Timelapse video can be found here: youtu.be/jobxPk4LXkQ

At some point, I wanted to draw Poe Dameron, and also wanted to draw a dragon. So Poe Dameron in a dragon rider AU anyone? With BB8 as magical being whose purpose isn't exactly clear but I wanted to include him. If you're really bored, yes, the writing on BB8 translate to something.

I hadn't drawn a dragon in something like ten years, so it was fun. I couldn't bring myself to make it completely lineless, as I really liked the sketch on some parts, so I kept it. I also drew the scales one by one if you're wondering, I hate myself that much. During the time I worked on this I had the time to watch in my second monitor to keep me motivated: the Croods, the Guardians of the galaxy Vol.2, Kiss kiss bang bang and Sherlock Holmes: A game of shadows. With some time left to spare. I haven't drawn much pictures with so much orange, not a color I usually work with. Which is a shame. Orange is a great color. My car is orange.

Character belongs to Disney/Lucasfilms

This is such a fun piece that really celebrates the Star Wars character! It feels like you add your own personal touches and that's what adds to the piece! You can tell you have fun and that you put a lot of love into creating it! Good Work!

I pretty much went: ''I want to draw a dragon, but I also want to draw Poe'' and this happened. I'm in the process of selecting prints for my first artist alley, and dragon rider Poe is number one on the list. People really jumped on board the idea.

And if you're bored, BB8 ''runes'' translate to something.

:iconprojectcomment:

hello!! This is a very cool piece. And I really like the idea of having him riding a dragon but still having a droid! Sci fi IS Fantasy :D

1. I think that the colors are very harmonious but at the same time they are a little monotone? Like the sky basically the same color as the dragon's belly... I don't know if this was a choice or if you were trying to make the lighting all orange -y and sunset like and it got a little carried away? I think if you added some more colors into the whole piece is would add a great deal of dimension, character and movement (not like the characters moving but your eye would move around and following the patterns of light and color more freely around the painting)

2. The droid could be having problems because he only has sharp edges even in the shadow maybe if you helped him blend into the background a little bit more it would make him less stand out-ish. Like it looks like a dusty place, why not have some cloudy dust around and diffuse the light? It could look cool :D Then I was wondering if that red eye ball was every more lit up? Maybe that would engage the view more (like he is looking at you?) Lastly the letters could glow a little more and throw their light on to the scene - interacting each object with the scene so that it all integrates makes a big difference - I have trouble with it all the time!

3. The anatomy of the dragon is a little odd (to me) I think the angle of his chest doesn't really fit with the neck and then the wing is very straight diagonal which could be more organic? Same thing with the dust and sharp edges - maybe loose some? especially on the tail going off to the distance.

4. the armor has a few odd folds seen as the lighting shows it to be. I don't know what it's made of though so I can't really say how it would behave, is it chainmale like he is a knight? But the design is really cool and his face is really nicely done so that's the most important!

Lastly if you would like I can do a paint over for you of my thoughts and with your 'ok' of course I would like to post it on my website - I won't post anything without permission and of course you would be credited in any way you like:D Here is my site if you are interested

Or I can do the paint over and link the my drop box to you without posting to my site...OR if you rather not have a paint over that's fine too - please let me know:D I hope this was helpful!

Thank you for your critique! I'd be more than happy if you want to do a paintover of my drawing, nobody has ever done one! I checked your site and this is neat. I actually like seeing paintovers because it brings a different perspective to the same drawing. Sometimes just a little thing makes the whole difference.
1. I still have many troubles with color palettes. I started with orange in mind and yeah, it ended up pretty much entirely orange and black. Last drawing I really pushed myself for a more saturated palette of pinks and blues. I always draw with desaturated colors...
2. The droid was the last part to be done because honestly, I had no idea with to do with it until the very end. Poe and the dragon were clearly more middle ages fantasy, but BB8, I had no clue. Except that I spent too much time making sure the letters on him actually translate to something. Of all the people I told, nobody attempted to translate it so far.
3. The dragon had severe underbite at first, I'm happy I caught that. I hadn't drawn a dragon since 2007 according to my gallery, so I'm actually happy with it.
4. It is chainmail, yes.

If you want to do a paintover, go for it! I really want to see what I could improve other than in words.

Sorry I took so long, I started getting carried away and could have worked on it for SO much longer:D I hope this gives the main ideas that I had - of course it's your painting and I'm just giving you one more way to look at it- maybe give you completely new ideas for it :D Let me know what you think

Thank you! And no worry, you didn't take long at all! I see what you mean now about the neck of the dragon, it was bending at a really sharp angle. BB8 also stands out a lot more. There's definitely something to learn about your paintover that I hope I'll be able to bring that to future pieces. Honestly it's great seeing this because it's the same idea deep down, like it's the same subject, but it doesn't have the same feel to it.

Oh cool! Happy it was useful for you. I wasn't really happy with it myself -  i mean my paint over - because I think it's way too smokey looking and I was going to bring back some of the sharp edges you had but then realized I was spending hours on it LOL. So I used what tiny bit of self control I have and stopped - I might update it though and I'll link it to you for sure if I do. It's really a fun one to work cause I love the original anyways so :D
Is there a particular part you DIDN'T agree with? I would like to know cause it helps me think about it further - I really tried keeping the original's idea as you said cause it isn't about changing everything!

Actually, I can't really say that I disagree with anything, as it is both our version of the same picture. The dragon's neck has a much more organic feel in yours, though I am not sure of the new shape of the jaw. Adding some green on his clothes breaks from the whole picture being orange, though him not having a cape is just a personal preference of mine. Actually, I think the fog could have been more blurry. I don't think it is too foggy, just that maybe the shape of the fog is defined too much.

Honestly I don't find it bad, I am actually happy of seeing my idea through somebody else's eye.

Oh great! haha :D Yeah it's mainly to throw a bunch of new ideas at you lol.

Yeah I agree the head and jaw got a little skewed when I was fixing the neck -as for the cape, I thought that WAS a cape lol..sorry about that!!
I think I have a strong tendency to make really stylized smoke/dust and it's always too defined, doesn't always work for every drawing - I need to work on that. But I'm happy you got the ideas through it all :)
Thanks for giving me feed back on the feed back  - I love the conversation it can bring cause now like, I know how you felt about it and what parts worked or didn't etc...cool cool

No problem! I always like to know other ideas about my work. What people like and don't like. I'm trying to get votes for prints for my first artist alley, and the dragon is at the head so far. There's people who vote for it because it's Poe Dameron, and others that vote for it because it has a dragon. Strangely the two groups don't seem to overlap, which I find hilarious.

Hi!
I realize I commented on a piece by you before, however the style is completely different. Finn looked almost comic-like, this one is oriented towards a realistic take, and I will treat it as such.
First of all, the anatomy is mostly okay, with only two issues: His shoulders are quite small given that pauldrons were actually huge, plus at least 2 inches of gambeson underneath. As you can see this guy looks quite bulky although bodybuilding wasn't really a thing around 1530:
encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/ima…

The other thing is his right forearm is too short in comparison to the upper arm. They should be of equal length.

Not commenting on the realism of dragons ;)

I kinda like BB8 in this setting, who said you can't mix sci-fi and fantasy? The only isue I have is that he looks a little bit like he was floating above ground, because there is no shadow around him, and light bounces from the ground onto his bottom side, which would be impossible if he was actually standing in between all the rocks.
Then, the imperial flag also looks a little bit like it was floating, at least the part that Poe is stepping on, but this time it's because I can't really see what's underneath to keep it in this shape. I presume it's a rock, but I'd prefer if I could see it better.

Last but certainly not least, something seems to be a bit off with the perspective. Maybe it's a very small dragon, I don't know but from what I can see, it's standing behind Poe and his head is not turned towards the viewer, so I'd assume there's some distance between Poe and the dragon's head. Now, if this was the case, the leather straps he's holding would have to be thinner around the dragon's head than they are in his hand. However, the opposite is true. And that's what creates an impression of the image being cluttered, like they're standing on top of each other. At least for me.

All in all, I like your take on the new Star wars universe and the mixing of genres, and I appreciate your step towards a somewhat realistic drawing style :)

Thank you for your comment!

Finn was much less detailed than this as it was a commission, and the commissioner only paid for a sketch, basic shading picture. This is more of what I normally do.

I like BB8, but I still think something is amiss, but I can't figure out why I feel that way. He was also done at the very end because I had no clue what to do with him. So he was a bit rushed, sadly. Lightsources and shadows are still a work in progress for me. Challenge for the next picture is to not make everything so dark for once. Why do I always end up with dark color themes? Sunlight exists.

Amazing. The lighting and colours create such a nice atmosphere! Did the robot travel through time?

I tried to make BB8 a more magical artefact than a robot, though I'm not sure I succeeded. It was the hardest part to transfer into a medieval AU. It was easier to switch his spaceship into a dragon.

I have seen that you put the painting into the :iconprojectcomment: group so I'll try to give you a more detailed review,

first of all as I said the colours and all colours being orangy makes the painting full of atmosphere and creates a sense of danger or one has the feeling that something serious is going to happen.

You gave yourselves a hard task with the robot because I think it's hard to fit it in the painting. But I don't think its necessarily messes it up. I just think that the robot is too much in focus because the rest of the painting is quite dark. If the robot is not the main focus I would darken it up and/or put it more in the background.

The amount of detail is really nice and the expression if the medieval guy is on spot ;). I don't like the rocks so much though, especially in the foreground. Maybe it would help to put in a bit more highlights and shadows?

To give improve the composition and give the painting more impact I would suggest to draw from a diffrent angle so that the horizon is not in the middle vertically. You could for example 'capture' the scene as if the 'camera' is lower than the armed man...

Then I would not place the armed man in the middle of the painting

I hope I could help and all in all I must say a really admiresome piece

Thank you for your comment!

I really wanted to put BB8 (the robot) into the painting, but honestly he was just waiting to be done more of the time as I had no idea what to do. You can see in the timelapse video that he gets done pretty much at the end because I still wasn't sure how to do it. He still bothers me, though I can't put my finger on why.

The ''stiff'' composition with the guy in the middle was done on purpose. I wanted him more to pose than to be in an action scene. Though now I kind of want to draw him on the dragon. But I'm not sure I want to redraw the dragon so soon. The scales took over an hour and a half alone...

I watched your time-lapse. It's great :). Seriously I'm not good at positioning objects rightly. I'm trying to learn it at the moment. But a good composition is difficult and needs lots of practice I guess...

My drawing teacher in college kept telling us to do a ''good composition'' yet he never told us what a good composition was. So pretty much every drawing I do, the composition is trial and error. I'm trying a more dynamic thing for my current picture.

I'm currently trying to improve my compositions myself but what I learned so far is that they are a few 'rules'.. well there are more guidlines. They are also applied in Photography. Just google 'golden ratio' or 'rule of thirds'. That will help you place objects so that they have more impact.
But there are more things you can do to improve:
Another thing should chose one or too focal points. One thing is you can zoom out your drawing a lot and make sure your focal points are still visible or the painting looks still good in 'small'. Also playing with the perspective (frog or bird perspective) can make the painting more interesting...

There is surely a lot more to learn but you don't have to trial and error ;). There is a lot of theory behind and if you know it and apply it I'm sure you will feel safer in future on how to place objects in the painting ;)

I read about composition theory but honestly, it just doesn't click. Rule of thirds is probably the one I know the most, and the easiest one for me. Golden ratio, I know about it but never really tried it. I haven't been doing backgrounds for a long time, before that it was characters floating in white space, and composition didn't matter. Now it matters a lot more, but I still have a hard time figuring what to put as a background, and by the time I decide, the character is usually completed enough that I don't feel like redoing it if it doesn't fit in the composition. So I guess it all boils down to poor planning before starting on my part...

Going back through my gallery, the last time I drew a dragon was in 2006, so 12 years ago. Poor thing had no muscles connecting the wings to the body and would never fly. You can see it here in the 2006 row: Improvement meme 2003-2017 by Black-Chimaera
