Rabbitfangs 3D printing commission WIP by BJPentecost Rabbitfangs 3D printing commission WIP by BJPentecost
This is a 3D printing commission Work In Progress for rabbitfangs over on FA.

On the left, some renders, on the right, the actual print.

I had to break her off the base and straighten her out because she wilted a little bit, either in shipping or during printing due to insufficient structural support. Now, however, she stands perfectly straight and her structural integrity is sound. I still need to paint her outfit, all her little fursies, and everything else.

I sculpted this in Zbrush and printed it using Shapeways: www.shapeways.com/shops/bobbie…

Material is called "Frosted Detail Plastic." Cost: Bloody expensive. This is based on another sculpture that I did which can be seen here: bjpentecost.deviantart.com/art… (The Dude Is In)

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. :)

That, right there is holy water for my eyes! Whenever I see examples of 3d printing it's always either of tiny things like rings and such, or machinery parts. To see an honest-to-god sculpted model printed like this is glorious! I'm also curious as to the spinning board she's holding. It looks as though it actually rotates inside the frame. How did you manage to do that?

Either way, stunning work!

:D Thanks. If you like this, wait till you see what I have coming up next. www.shapeways.com/model/203711… I printed that. There will be photos soon. I am very happy with how it came out. :boogie:

As for the board, yes, it does spin. They are two separate pieces, two separate shells. All I did was keep them distinct. It printed up like that- no assembly required. Shapeways has several materials that allow for separate and moving parts.

Holy moly, that's amazing! Geez I bet holding that in your hand for the first time felt good! I hope the costs of good 3d printing continue to drop, artists need more opportunity to create things like this!

oh COOL that is one sexy bunny. I didn't even know you could 3D print Zbrush sculpts...this opens up a whole world of possibilities! How much on average does it cost to 3D print a model that size?

You were, at the moment you wrote that comment, in the same place I was, emotionally, when I discovered 3D printing. "OH! THAT IS SO AWESOME!" And then I discovered how much that shit costs. XC *Plummet* But never fear! Prices have come down and they are still coming down every day. Firstly, I use Shapeways to 3D print: www.shapeways.com/shops/bobbie… You can get a good idea about prices from there. With the exceptions of the precious metals (which are ludicrously expensive to work with in 3D printing for some reason) I tend to put a $2 - $20 markup on my pieces.

Cost depends on several factors, the main ones being:

1.) Volume (how much material will it take to make the item).
2.) The amount of space it takes up inside the machine.
3.) Material type.

In this material: www.shapeways.com/materials/fr… That figure (which stands 25cm tall) cost $570. In WSF plastic, it would cost $156.98. The latter material has a grainy finish and less detail than the former which is why I chose Frosted Detail Plastic instead if WSF.

I hope that answers your questions. :)

Thanks for the detailed response Pentecost! So do you just upload 3D models in a certain file format to the site and someone checks it for quality then you are able to order 3d prints of it? If so, is it like ordering 2D prints of your artwork, as in  the larger the resolution (or the more vertices) the better? I'm very clueless about the process but curious. And wow that is a lot of money, I think I will get a print oneday of a model I create just to set it on my desk, I think that would be a lifelong unique piece to have and worth the money. Im nowhere near good enough though haha.

Pretty much. Working with Shapeways is simple. You upload a model, usually in obj format, and it's that simple.... except there are a bunch of 3D printing rules you need to abide by. Your model should be water tight (no holes) and no manifold geometry. There are also bounding box limitations depending on the material, minimum wall thickness, minimum wire.... each material has its own separate rules. I suggest looking in Shapeways' tutorial section to get started. :)

Thanks. :) She's actually decently sized, or I think so anyway. She's about 10 inches or 25 cm tall. I would have preferred to print her a little bigger but the price would have been OUTLANDISH. T__T
