Key To My Heart by BJPentecost Key To My Heart by BJPentecost
I sculpted this in Zbrush and had it 3D printed for my girlbizzle. The one on the bottom is the actual print. It didn't come out like that by default, I painted it silver and blue and added on all the gemstones. I was very happy with the quality of the 3D print from Shapeways.

Thanks. ^__^ I actually have a version for sale here: www.shapeways.com/model/181635… Unfortunately, it is too large and intricate to print up in any of Shapeway's metals atm but I'm working on a design that will be printable in metal. :D

This was printed up in Frosted detail plastic and I printed up another version in SWF. I don't have a pic of that one atm but it didn't come out quite as good as the FDP.

How much does it cost to get your models 3D printed?
Wonderful work on the finer details, I like how it's beautiful but not girlishly so.

It can be a little bit pricey. Costs are based on material and volume so if you get a hollowed out model printed up in a cheaper material, you can drop as little as 12$. It really all depends on what you're getting printed up and in what material. :)

That is absolutely stunning. Is this meant to be hung on a chain or something? My mother is a jeweler by trade so I am always interested in charms and trinkets... This blows everything else that I have seen out of the water.

^__^ That is very kind of you to say. I did make a little dingy-hole so she can hang it on a nail or from a chain if she wants to. I hope to get up enough money to see if I could print it up in real silver. :)

Y'know... If you could find a cheap but durable metal and get some kind of bulk pricing for printing (or print a sturdy cast and then mold them yourself!) you could pursue a whole different avenue of these 3D printing shenanigans...

Indeed. :) That thought has crossed my mind. In fact I have even considered trying to get them plated. Don't know where the hell I would get that done though. XC

Heh. :D If you're serious, I will be putting it in my Shapeways store eventually. I want to shrink it a little bit to bring down the price so. I think 35$ is too much. Though thankfully, shrinking the model will bring the price down exponentially since price is based on volume of material.

Wow, really? You don't think 35 is too much? 45 for detail plastic gets you the best result. Seems kinda steep to me. O__O I want to do everything I can to lower the price. ^__^; I don't know too many people who can toss around 50$ on a whim.

Well if it has good detail and a good size, yeah. A lot of people would pay for it. I mean you can make 2 kinds to sell. One that's smaller and cheaper, the other is full size and a bit more expensive.

That did cross my mind but I have NNNOOOO idea how to do that. Also, the material is plastic. I'd be afraid I'd hurt (melt or break) the plastic.

well my brother said in his art class his friend made a silver Lego man by burning it out of the plaster mold and filling the mold with molten silver, so basically its lost plastic instead of wax,
there might be companies that do it for you.

They were acrylic gems I got from Michael's. I had to cut some of them to fit. I also had to pull apart a decent amount of fake jewelry to get some acrylic gems that would fit the size of the holes I made in the key. I was lucky. I found a flower with elipsoidal gems that fit perfectly. Literally. All I had to do was glue them in. The heart was a little more difficult and I ended up having to pull it out in the end anyway. It ripped off a lot of the paint. What I would really love to do is see if I could print this up in silver and use real gems. :D WAY too expensive though. :\
