For those of you coming to see this due to the recent daily deviation award, make sure to check out the animated version!

This idea has been floating around in the back of my head for a while now, mostly due to the iris from Stargate SG1. I did a little research and found this amazing video of one controlling a garage, I knew I had to have one.

I did my best to model my own using AutoCAD (hooray for the "array" command!) and a good dose of experimentation with cardboard to test and re-test the parts (I would have included a few pictures of the demo for comparison, but with all the modifications I had to make, it was just plain ugly).

It's made entirely of paper with the exception of the wooden dowels for axes. It comes to 15" (38cm) wide X 19" (48cm) high X 1.5" (3.5cm) thick, while the middle aperture has a diameter of 5.75" (14.6cm). Additionally, all pieces are identical (and thus interchangeable).

That's some impressive engineering for paper! Nice design!

:/ i wanna make this out of all wood, and bigger XD like bedroom door size lol
billybob884's avatar
:D ignoring the fact that it'd be way too wide, you'd have to cut into the floor and ceiling with this design... it'd still be bad-ass though

XD nah id just design my house to have it already >w> only tricky part will the the gears to get the handle in a different spot lol

make it motorized

I am jealous, of your skill

Awesome work there! I've been working on some cardstock models, but nothing as precise and functional as this. That you very much for sharing!
billybob884's avatar
i actually only used regular copy paper (20lbs 75gsm) for this; cardstock would probably have been too heavy duty... but thanks all the same ;)

breathtaking; I totally jawdropped
