Art block ramblings. Ugggggggggggggg.

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 15, 2010, 10:48 AM

Art block. Really sucks. ATM I think it's just stemmed from ill-practice.  On one hand my career has been exploding in a new and exciting direction that involves space ship parts sitting on my workbench at the moment, all thanks to my dedication to my Grappling Gun project. Who knew being a fanatic for Halloween would turn into a life saving career?  Only in LA, man. Tinsel Town needs hot shop chicks who can knock out a prop.

On the other hand, I suppose I'm wrestling with the idea that my skills are just not good enough to get cartooning jobs that are worth my time just yet, when tinkering with props, something I'm also experienced and badass at pays a lot better.  Prop designers still need art skills, and it HAS been helping with my drafting skills, which hopefully will effect my usual inability to draw backgrounds and objects. Further thoughts on the process worked out well in this discussion (As well as Toshi having fantastic points for anyone in an art rut.)

bilious: man that fav.me/d2kxssw (meme) was the last time I drew somethign I was like. really proud of
TheToshihiko:  SEE
TheToshihiko: VARIETY
TheToshihiko: variety
bilious: ONCE I'm ON MY GAME I'M AMAZING
bilious: I think that's why I'm so frustrated right now
TheToshihiko: We all work in cycles, it's how we do
bilious: yeeeeaaah :C
bilious: I just want to push the cycle towards being able to draw again.
TheToshihiko: Only way to do that is by
TheToshihiko: you know
TheToshihiko: actually drawing
bilious: But I guess generally when I get in these ruts it's because I'm about to either level up or have some sort of epiphany about my work
TheToshihiko: COME HELL, HIGH WATER, OR CRAPPY DOODLES
bilious: I'M STILL DOODLING EVERY NIGHT
bilious: THEY'RE JUST ALL BLEH
TheToshihiko: Yep (((:

So I am FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT. And making tons of really sloppy thumbnails for comics and future works since I can't seem to find the ability to do finished pieces while working all day every day. I've also under Toshi's suggestion been checking out all the artists that inspire me- she's right, there's something uplifting and inspiring about looking through all your art-heroes and thinking THIS is why I like their work. Let's see if I can apply it to my own! (While still keeping it my work.)

Origin of a DJ Part Two is fully thumbnailed. I plan to have it finished hell or high water before the beginning of Round Four of DeviantDead. It's kind of important that it is for reasons I REFUSE TO REVEAL YET.  My test audiences have been very excited about developments though. :headbang: Even if I end up drawing it really shittily, I'm confident the script itself will hold strong even with stick figures.

So yeah, busy as hell and wishing I had more days to laze about and draw, but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel for all of the hard work I've been breaking my back and fingers for over the past year.

IT IS SUCH A FUN THING TO DO. It's seriously like. commissioned themed sculpture. I've had a lot of free reign with this first assignment, I think my new Boss is testing the waters with me, and it's been super fun pushin' it but I really need to learn how to pull in the reigns to fit the budget. It's a delicate dance I can't wait to become more acquainted with. XD

And/or find jobs with higher budgets and more puzzles attached. O: It's such an interesting field in general, my dad was comparing it to when he worked in the Toy Business- it's space ship parts this week, but it could be feathers and skulls next week. I'm so excited about the journey, man. :D

If the horrifying rumors circulating around the interwebs are true re: a Watchmen sequel/prequel (please be a prequel D: ) I better be on that team even if it's clipping flashing off of castings or painting set fences. >:C

WOO spaceship parts! And woo! Having a job!
Boo to the art block. Maybe when you get some time, we should go be creeps in a marketplace and just sketch people. Or you and I can go sketch the cemetery... Hollywood Forever is freaking gorgeous.

Dude... duuuuuude... you're getting paid to make cool props, don't complain, that's awesome! 8D

But anyway, puttering around with thumbnails and roughs is a good thing to be doing when you don't feel ready to tackle finished drawings. You're still drawing something, and what you're doing will be useful once you're ready to dive into finished work. So it's all good!

Yeah that's what I'm at least trying to accomplish XD It's definitely not for lack of ideas!! It's frustrating because of that. Hopefully once things all settle down a bit more I'll be able to bring these plans to fruition. >:3

I srsly need to sort out better time management.

Also things-making is one of my favorite things to do, man. Srsly. >:CCCCCC

Sounds like you've found your niche! Prop making sounds very cool, maybe this is your calling? :D Good luck with your career!! And yay for DJ comic!

But art block, ugh, I'm going through the same thing. I can't seem to do any orginal art let alone any I want to make a completed picture of, and it's not from lacking ideas! I'm doodling most days but they're nothing special and I can't get out what I want in my head. >_<

"You can't make a tree grow faster by pulling on it."

I like that.

Art is my job in general, but I'm many faceted. XD I don't really put much on my DA besides my drawings stuffs, but I'm always graphic-designing or in the studio hammering away at something, and even when I'm swamped from early to late I try to at least doodle before bed. I just haven't had nice large chunks of time or inspiration to do more than doodles lately, and it's gotten me down about my skillz I think.

Time to try to do something about it, schedule willing. >:C

truly know how you feel. i dont do prop making like you do (which sounds awesome!) my work involves drawing characters for kids or theming playareas but laterly its been graphic design (which isnt my strong point) and photo manipulation! which can drain your creativity, that much i know for sure so i understand where your coming from.

i think maybe some inspiration needs to be injected but thats always easier said than done. maybe a holiday? go somewhere completely different, it would give you a break for the 9-5 art stuff thats for someoone else and you might find that inspiration your looking for! even if its a cheap camping hoilday of something :D

9-5?

The past week it's been 9am-11pm. ;_; That's the problem.

I started to draw straight in photoshop so i could do something colored last night but around 1am my dad woke with a bolt from the couch and was like WHY ARE YOU STILL AWAKE and so that killed that plan.

BUT I did discover that tweaking some stuff re: brushes really made a huge difference. D:< Sometimes art blocks just need a medium switch!

Toshi has a point. It's just drawing. You just gotta do it, even if your mind says "I haff no ideas leave me alone!" Lol I'm still battling with the same issue. We will persevere!!

Oh and major props to your props once more!

Oh it's not for lack of ideas, I have far too many of those, it's just my inability to execute the picture in my head as easily as usual. XD It's a matter of being out of practice, I think. I've been sketching but nothing the next step up due to having no time to do anything more, you know? D: (It's already 8pm here and I'm still on the lathe. XD Probably not going to be done until late.)

But I'm intent on finishing this stage tonight dammit. >:C Life will be easier if I do.

At least you get to make cartooning into a job one day. I have to make do with it as a hobby. Stupid economy, I feel like I'm slowly turning into a NEET. A NEET that also adding to the artblock pile.

Good luck!

I'm not sure what a NEET is!

But yeah it's all part of my nefarious stop-motion plans. They are my love. But practical effects are another passion of mine I only got to scratch the surface on during school, and supplemented with years in the studio with my crazy inventor dad. Absolutely not complaining one bit to be workin' hard to make 'em. :D

Just hope I have an excuse to experiment/play with pyrotechnics at some point. :D

Not in Education Employment or Training. NEET. (I finished all my education and training; it's a pretty terrible situation to be in if it lasts longer than 6 months, anyway.)

As for art block - I can so relate right now. Man, we need to talk more. I'm not sure I'll be online much these days - a really sucky thing happened to me today (it's more of that stuff we talked about), but when I do get online, we need to talk! I miss talking with you. <3

Thanks so much Buu! <3333 I sooo enjoy it, it's like. My brain is wired perfectly for this type of work, I have to work really hard at figuring out what corners to cut and still live up to my standards. XD My new boss/mentor has been really supportive of the whole thing, I'm absolutely jazzed.

JAZZ HANDS JAZZED.

Ffffff damn you art block. Making my commissioners suffer and the DD audience left in the dark about THESE AMAZING PLOT DEVELOPMENTS.
