Clint Eastwood by BikerScout Clint Eastwood by BikerScout
I've found that painting faces with texture is not only challenging but also far more enjoyable than porcelain smooth skin so I'm always on the look out for some good reference photos of older faces.

And who better than Clint Eastwood? :aww: He's one of the few remaining living Hollywood icons and he was a real pleasure to paint.

One of my personal faves. Love how realistic it looks but that's all down to careful
use of subtle texture and patience! It can be easy to focus too much on adding texture
which can end up standing out. Texture is something I work on as I go along rather
than adding, say, right at the end.

If you've not seen them already, my Big Red Speedpaint videos show a 1-hour Hellboy
painting from beginning to end (slightly sped up) but you'll see how the texture builds
up from a very early stage. Let me know what you think. :aww:

Yah I've studied what wrinkles look like and even tried the highlight thing, but often times they still don't look right. I think it's just a matter of practice. I have noticed them looking better in the pic I'm working on now, so maybe I'm getting it. You're right about the focusing too much on texture, though. In the portrait I'm working on now I've done a bit too much texture and I'm having to tone it down a bit. I've tried building it up right from the beginning, but usually it ends up getting blended away after each phase, so I'm trying to find "my" way of doing the texture that suits me.

There's a strange ghostly pale quality to this, is that by design?

I seem to remember increasing the contrast a little to make him really stand out from the background. :aww:

Hey! I used a thumbnail of this deviation in a review of the movie J.EDGAR! Sorry I didn't get to tell you sooner, but wasn't until this week that the pictures were working. Thanks for posting this picture and I hope the link brings you many hits!

You're at the beginning of an exciting journey! :excited: My main advice would have to be don't let yourself get despondent if you can't produce perfect work immediately. It's all about trial & error & finding techniques that you're comfortable with. Like many things, it takes time to get it right. Just have fun getting there!

To get an idea of how I paint, check out my Painting Videos or Tutorials section in my Gallery. And if you have questions, just go ahead and ask. :aww:

thank you ^_^ your video of Wolfman has helped tremendously, please if you don't mind, when you used the pen tool to outline the teeth was that to sort of mask them off so the outline stayed clean ???? its a new technique to me lol i am new to Photo-shop i have CS3

You're absolutely right - I use the Pen tool to ensure a clean selection. For the Wolfman, it was all about the fur & the teeth. The fur didn't need to be accurate, it just needed to LOOK convincing whereas the teeth needed that sharpness to them.

I find the Pen tool to be more flexible than the Lasso and it allows for smooth curves but it's one that takes a bit of getting used to. Once you master it though, it's a great addition to the painting arsenal. :)

Stunning portrait of a great man. One of my favourite quotes comes from The Outlaw Josie Wales.."Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining". Class:D
