self-portrait by bigbigtruck self-portrait by bigbigtruck
First self portrait since 2003. I'd never gotten to use the multi-colored pencil method on a close-up face, so I used my own.
I was wearing sparkly purple eyeshadow, hee.

It feels weird putting my own face up on the internet D:

Ref'd in a portable cosmetic mirror that I keep around for expressions and hands.

Prismacolor pencil, white ink, india ink, acrylic paint on bristol.

It's hard to use so many colors on the skin and you made it really well, awesome technique.

i love using vibrant colors. i think the less common they are on the face, the more characteristics the portrait has

Man, this is awesome. Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm probably in love with your neck. It's so neat, colourful, and yet accurate. The hatching you used throughout the piece makes it look marvelous. And that's not just because I love hatching. Plus, you overlapped colours that would normally clash, but in this mindset, they work hilariously well! The bits of more obvious contour line [under your left eye on the cheek; neck] also help give it the realistic element.
The remnants of scribbling on your hand [which is fantastically drawn] are really great. Especially because there's not a defined end when you get to the actual arm.
The attention to highlights is just delicious. Your pinky being a good example. The tick marks of white [forehead; cheek], despite being so small, add so much.
The nose and lips are a common place for error and re-do, but you crafted them very skillfully, so props to you!
Plus, gotta love the expression. It seems so animated, despite being a ref. Also, it seems as if I can almost see the orbicularis oculi...

I love how detailed it looks but how thick the colored strokes are - and in general I love anyone who can pull off this style of coloring, I've always wanted to be able to :D I really like your hand especially!

It looks like it--er, you could move!

It seems like in places (around the eyes in particular), you rendered yourself pretty cruelly. I totally understand. I have the girliest of girly faces, but when I draw myself, I make these crazy eyebrows and I'm just vicious about my own face.

If you drew yourself like a barbie, I wouldn't wanna watch you anymore. XD Self portraits really show a lot about the artist. Yay! You're not egotistical! Way to go.

Well, I'm 30, so I am starting to get tiny little crow's feet - but yeah, I tend to be harsh in self-portraits :)
