Wonderful commentary on our current world BidboroughStreet. Bravo. Beautiful, unique quality of drawing which gently pushes a huge punch. Well done. Your subtlety
is a joy to view. Thanks so much for your faves. We're currently working on how levels of light change and enhance colours, as in Ruby angel  Ruby Angel Of The Red Maple In Stereoscopic 3-D by aegiandyad

Thank you very much for your thoughtful comments. They make me very happy. I would like to work on the comic again. Perhaps I'll put more colour into it, next time!

Welp, I guess I don't have any reason to be Batman anymore.

"You're never alone with a Strand!" [World's most disastrous TV advertising campaign*, of which no clips remain even on Youtube. You'd think some bright social historian would have archived it!]

*'Or the good people who created an advertising campaign for Strand cigarettes with the strapline ‘You’re never alone with a Strand’. The omens for the advert were good. It was written by John May, was popular with the public, with Terrence Brooks (the smoking man) becoming a star and the music reaching Number 39 in the singles chart. However, sales of the brand were poor and it was soon taken off the market. The public associated smoking Strand cigarettes with being lonely and was put off from buying them. The advert is now regarded as the most disastrous cigarette advert ever aired.

Haha! An interesting episode in the annals of the history of consumerism. Perhaps I can find the ad tucked away somewhere in all these 1980s EastEnders...

You'd have to go right back to the early nineteen sixties at least...

Well, that might explain why it's not on youtube!

There's plenty of 'archive' footage on Youtube... This little gem should have been preserved by someone so that it could be video-recorded after that technology came along and then subsequently burned to CD, uploaded, etc. Picture a black and white film shot near the northern end of one of the more atmospheric London bridges. An old fashioned street light glows feebly through a light fog; someone who could be a fifties version of Leamas, Harry Palmer, Harry Lime or, hell...  even Chief Inspector Maigret of the Police Justiciare is standing enigmatically in a fine coat and trilby waiting for.... someone who isn't coming, or something that isn't going to happen. Resigned to his disappopintment, whatever it is, he consoles himself by imagining the sound of cool jazz as he takes out a distinctive packet and extricates and ignites a calming coffin nail of Virginia's finest. Instant contentment. "You're never alone with a Strand!". It was brilliant, ineluctably memorable, a great little B&W film noir type drama. You would have loved it! The only snag was...

... no one wanted to smoke any of those fags and then be like that loser on the bridge!

BOOM: youtu.be/WjBHUQEiTPw

You made me too curious with your alluring and very accurate description - except the fact that he's not near a bridge but on the Strand, outside Australia House. Which, the City at night, IS one of the loneliest places on earth (tho strictly, I guess, Australia House isn't within the bounds, but you know what I mean). Lovely! What a great ad! Haha, I think I must have a magazine ad of David Deville smoking Strands at some point...

Ah, Harry Lime! That moment when the apartment lamp lights up his face is one of my favourite moments in cinema.

youtu.be/MXIF0jdpsTA <-- Good Lord, no one watch this link who hasn't seen The Third Man - one of the greatest films ever made. And it's got Trevor Howard in it.

You could write an entire novel based on nothing but connecting the imagined subplots of commercials described in detail. That is your fortune, waiting for you.

Outstanding research work! Let no one who HAS seen the film bother watching this episode from the B&W TV spin off starring Michael Rennie www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dvVsJ… . But DO watch the 'entry' of Det. Ch. Insp. Maigret as seen after the start of his concurrently running TV series www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yG1XH… of which this is a retrospective example shown later on BBC 2 www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yG1XH… . The 'titles' start at 1min 40sec. Some wag wrote in and asked what Maigret might have been smiling at. 'Points of View' [or was it That's Life] collaged some clips that appeared to show Maigret dropping his match and lighting a powder train which then burned towards the dark corner where Harry Lime was standing in the titles to his rival's series, with a stock explosion edited in at le moment critique!

Good god this is terrible! I didn't know there was a tv series! Sometimes you make me feel like I don't know anything at all...

Maigret is somewhat alluring... I could spend my entire life watching vintage BBC... sitting here drinking my tepid tea and nibbling absentmindedly at snacks... that IS a funny idea for a collage. Poor Orson Welles. Poor cat.
