I don't have much to report this week, other than that I saw Star Trek Beyond today. As a lifelong Trek fan, I know how divisive the reboot movies are... some of the criticisms against them are justified, sure but as with a certain other fandom I was once a part of, it's really hard to separate "This is bad because it's not what X should be" criticism from "This is bad because I personally don't like it" fanboy whining.
That said, as a lifelong Trek fan... Into Darkness really, really sucked for a number of reasons, chief among them that it felt almost nothing like Star Trek, so I was a bit more nervous than usual going into this one.
I'm happy to say that Beyond is miles ahead of its predecessor in pretty much every respect. I don't mind action movie aspects in my Trek as long as the feel is right, and boy howdy, is the feel right here. Not to mention the feels... contrary to the last time we saw an Enterprise get destroyed onscreen, this time they made it mean something, and it HURTS.
I must point out, in the interest of full disclosure, that when Justin Lin of the Fast and the Furious series was announced to be directing this movie, I was more than a touch concerned. Well, the man may be known for an endless gasoline-and-testosterone-fueled franchise, but damn if he doesn't have an eye for gorgeous shots and photography. I'd go so far as to say I want him back for the next movie, because it just looks that good. Really, Beyond exceeded my expectations all across the board. That disastrous first trailer was a fluke after all; I'm inclined to blame Paul Marketing for it.
So, this week will see me back to work on composition, with a MIDI piece for Tasakeru hopefully near completion. Then again, I also intend to buy Overwatch this week, so that might throw a bit of a wrench into my schedule. Ah well.
