Ace of Swords

Description

Media: Colored pencil on black paper.

I am very fond of swords. Unfortunately, liking something a lot does not mean drawing that thing will come naturally to me. This card tormented me far more than the other two aces I've done thus far did.

And just to make it an extra frustrating experience, I decided to add a bunch of clouds, which is a subject I have a lot of difficulty with in this particular medium. Apparently, I hate myself that much.

There were about eight drafts of this. One day I might scan them and put them in my scraps. It's far more likely I will hang them somewhere and throw sharp objects at them.

That said, I am actually quite happy with the way this came out in the end. There is where the edge of the sword is uneven, but looks even more uneven than it really is due to light colors. I can live with it, though.

Onto the Ace of Coins.

this drawing brings mystery and wonder to the viewer but the lack of colours lose the metal of the sword; which in turn loses the complete impact of the picture.

the colours around the sword act life a fantasy world. the curves and softness of the background makes the sword stand out to the viewer.

the viewer's attention is straight away drawn to the handle of the sword because of the difference in colour to the background, and the details put into it. i would have liked to see a bit more detail into the metal of the sword to make it pop out just as much as the handle.

for a first time of drawing a sword, it is really well done. the details in every aspect of the drawing makes it a really amazing artwork and one of the better drawing i have seen in a while. i look forward to seeing more artwork from this artist in the future.
