Description
Native American women's clothing varied by region and community, but often included skirts, dresses, and leggings.
Often made from deerskin, skirts were wrapped around the waist and tied with a belt. In post-contact times, women began wearing broadcloth skirts wrapped around the body.
Dresses were worn in the Southwest, and could be elaborate for special occasions. For example, dresses might have large decorative panels of beadwork or silk appliqué.
Leggings were worn in cooler weather or to protect from scratches. Broadcloth leggings were a common choice, and were often decorated with silk appliqué or beading.
