To Summer! by BellaCielo To Summer! by BellaCielo
Happy ... birthday ... cptlfrghtr ... [passes out from dramatic-lighting-induced-fatigue]

Really though, this was the first attempt I've made at dappled lighting not involving any fancy tricks like duplicating layers and using layer masks ... in fact, essentially all the coloring is on one layer, making this my most traditonal-painting-like piece to date. This also takes the prize for most-characters-in-a-single-painting — at least in recent memory.

Speaking of characters, I decided to draw the Control Data Corporation & Cray-tans (and a special friend) because all but one belong to cptlfrghtr and I tend to neglect them somewhat. Recently he created a few more, so I decided this would be a great time to commit their designs to "paper", so to speak! ^_^

Foreground, left to right:
VSOS-tan, SCOPE and LTSS-tan's daughter... kinda... sorta, still youngish here since this is set in the mid-80s. She's not a good swimmer, hence her fright.
SCOPE-tan, matriarch of the CDC family! I imagine she's kind of stuck in the past style-wise, thus the 60s bikini / sunglasses.
eOS-tan, the second of SCOPE and LTSS-tan's terrible science children. I think she has some Unix genes spliced into her too ... honestly with two mad scientists as parents anything can happen. She's still a little'un here because of the time period.
LTSS-tan, government physicist, mad scientist, wine afficianado (probably) and friends-with-benefits (by which I mean "children") to SCOPE-tan.
NLTSS-tan, The second of LTSS-tan's kids. Momma's girl. Professional Cray-tan figher.
CrTSS-tan, NTLSS-tan's older sister. Gets on better with Cray-1-tan. Wears that labcoat everywhere.

And in the background (left to right):
KRONOS-kun risking mortal injury to go on a picnic with ex-beau MTS-tan
CDC NOS-tan being tormented by Cray 1-tan and her TERRIBLE ICE POWERS. ("It's too hot out! I'll faint otherwise")

Everybody but Cray 1-tan belongs to cptlfrghtr (Cray-tan is Kattlanna's)

MTS-tan: pregnant or totally pregnant? Hmm...

I love the lighting on this. It really gives the picture an extra vibrancy and does a great job of complementing the (correctly flat!) shading. And the strokes are so simple, too, mostly just ovals, which is a fantastic way of approximating the blur of a tree's outline underneath the sun—too many people assume sunlight is perfectly polarized and unidirectional when drawing outdoor scenes.

Didn't have that in mind, but now that you mention itttttt... in that case OS/360-tan must be lurking behind one of the trees, readying herself to pounce.

Happy to hear it turned out well! Especially since it was painted without the benefit of any guides or tutorials — had to rely on reference images and work out what technique would best emulate the appearance. This time I decided to keep it simple, incorporating lots of green from the atmosphere into the shaded colors and using a plain round brush to create the patches of sunlight (with dashes of brightness for extra vibrancy and depth). Compare with two previous attempts at dappled lighting.

As for sunlight not being completely unidirectional, this is something I've only recently (last year or so) come to realize.

Did you draw that just for replying to me or do you have a gigantic stash of yuri lying around?!

It's definitely a huge improvement, especially because you're acknowledging the colour of the light rather than just messing around with... what appears to be a black-and-white Photoshop pattern set to 'overlay'. Palettes are a beautiful thing in the right hands. (Or left hands? Still not clear on that one.)

Technically the latter — though it's part of an even larger stash of unposted sketches lying around. Along with yuri and implied-aftermath-of-yuri, there are request sketches, unfinished works and other pieces I'm happy with but haven't posted here because I never got permission from their requesters to do so. Should probably work on all those things...

You're pretty close. I flattened all the layers, duplicated the layer and lightened it, put the lightened layer beneath the original color layer and then erased patches of it with a soft brush so the brighter section showed through. Lazy, easy and not good at all in hindsight since it completely ignored the ways that color varies in different lighting. Thankfully I've amended my ways ... glad I'm going in the right direction and that the effort is paying off!

Right hands. Definitely right hands!

I repeat my strong suggestion that you become a Tumblrite...

Used to be borderline tumblr-addicted but the fighting and whatnot eventually burned me out. Though I still managed my vintage tech blog because the tumblr retrotech community (yes, that's a thing now) tends to be marginally less quarrelsome than the general population.

An ask / art blog would be something though. Thought about it a lot before, mostly as a clearing-house for various sketches, (written) character concept stuff, background information, short stories and anything else too random to put here (maybe?). Then again we already have a wiki for at least three of those five things. Decisions, decisions...

Yeah, but you could post all your shipping stuff on an ask blog... *hint, hint*

True ... true! I'm definitely gonna sleep on this. And see if I can come up with a clever title and theme idea. Not that it'll have much of a viewer-base ... which is probably for the best, everything considered.

Nothing wrong with wearing a labcoat everywhere -w-
