How do you deal with haters?

Fri Jun 13, 2014, 4:25 PM by behindinfinity:iconbehindinfinity:

I got this as a question on my Tumblr, and I felt I could share my thoughts here as well because it seems it's something a lot of people can relate to. I hope this comes to helpful to any of you guys reading.

I’m certain there are people who dislike me. Some I come to know through whisperings because I have eyes everyyyyywheeeeere.

However, I don’t feel the need to acknowledge them or do anything about it unless they are causing any real harm, especially to people I care about.

There is a popular quote that I like referencing for this topic, which gets the message across in a charming way:

You can be a juicy, ripe peach and there’s still going to be someone who doesn’t like peaches, so you can either submit to someone’s criticism of you, or you can get on with the business of being your own amazing self who attracts other like-minded people that appreciate you.” — Dita Von Teese

I used to be affected if I found out someone didn’t like me, but I’ve come to learn that people can have very irrational reasons for hating someone.

Sometimes it is simply because your personalities and tastes are not compatible. And that’s fine and normal.

Other times, they can take a part of you and twist it and build up their own negative perception and convince themselves that they are right to hate you. But it doesn’t mean that what they think about you is true. Their image of you that they force upon themselves could be due to their own insecurities.

Although I sometimes say this jokingly, I find that in certain cases it’s not just simply “Haters gonna hate.” I also dislike it when people jump to the conclusion, “They just hate you because they’re jealous.” While it can be true at times, it’s not the ultimate answer. Let’s be real here. It is not surprising for people to feel a sense of dislike towards someone who is truly being a terrible human being. Did you do something that merits you being considered a terrible human being? If the answer is no, then good.

Here’s what you can do: If someone openly throws some harsh words at you, take a deep breath and try to objectively consider what they have to say. Maybe you can ask yourself things like:

:bulletorange: Are they actually trying to offer constructive criticism but are  lacking in tact and eloquence? If they seem interesting or intelligent enough, try to converse with them to understand. Maybe you’ll learn something new. If they are just bigots or trolls, pity them for a second, don’t dignify them with an answer or any more of your time, and move on. Be the better person.

:bulletorange: Are they pointing out something you may have done wrong that you weren’t aware of? Do you think they are right? If they are, be humble enough to consider that you might have something to improve on. If they’re not, then just don’t mind them. If someone is really set on disliking you, you’re the last person they will allow to change their minds.

These are just general ideas, because it always depends on the context. But in the end, what’s important is that if you truly believe you did nothing wrong, then disregard them and walk away with your head held high. Hopefully you aren’t a sociopath.

You can’t please every single person in the world. And that’s okay. The people whose happiness and opinions should matter the most are your own, and those of the people you care about and care for you. If you focus on being your own fantastic self, you can feel sorry for your haters because they lost the opportunity to get to know the wonderful person you are.

Earlier this year, my friends and I were invited to be overseas guests for HobbyCon in Sabah, Malaysia.

Time flew by very fast, and before we knew it...

Our first day was spent doing a lot of eating, thanks to our guide Alyssa  I will justify it as us fueling up for an action-packed weekend! We tried nasi lemak for the first time (LOVED IT), had some shaved ice desserts after, then a big dinner of clay pot rice, stir-fry noodles with clams, really tasty chicken wings, etc. and THEN we still raided Pick N' Pay for our midnight snacks because we love convenience stores and we wanted to try things we don't have in Manila.

We planned our cosplays ahead with Team Kachang Puteh, the guests from Singapore. Our theme for the first day of HobbyCon was Shingeki no Kyojin!

:iconmerkymerx: Miguel - Eren Jaeger
:iconbehindinfinity: Jin - Mikasa Ackerman
:iconweakman: Dom - Jean Kirschtein
:iconkitska: Kitska - Levi
:icondorkodile: Tessie - Hanji Zoe

By our powers combined, we became TEAM MEGADERP

Here we are being totally OOC with the fabulous jnalye

We at least tried to stay in character for the Cosplay All-Stars March!

We prepared a little skit for our walk. The three of us new recruits started out marching behind Levi and Hanji, and Eren would run ahead of them when we were near the front. Levi disapproves of Eren's lack of discipline and kicks him down.

We heard that the main sponsor was watching up front and thought that Miguel/Eren was kicked down for real. Much to his shock and further confusion, the crowd cheered and snapped a lot of pictures. We are not always in character, but when we are, maybe we are a little too convincing? Whoops! ^^;

Another angle. Look at all the happy sadists in the crowd! Kidding!

There were so many people that the barricades were bending. We had never done anything quite like the All-Stars March so that was pretty cool albeit nerve-wracking!

Our kick reenactment on the news!

After us came the 501st Legion. So cool! Our course they played The Imperial March!

While the crowd took pictures of us, I snuck a quick snapshot of them too

I find Stormtroopers really cute for some reason

The day's most popular pose!

Jean and Eren getting along for once
Yes Jean, you can be a fanciful unicorn too
Eren is on his invisible bike, copying the monkey at the back

Heichou is enjoying the show

With Belle Annachuu as Xiaoyu, our friend from another dimension apparently

I'm always nom-ing her hair doughnuts

After taking pictures with people at the photo wall (I haven't seen a lot from there and I remember we had a bunch of funny photos because we got a lot of funny requests — please send me our pics if you were one of the people who went up there with us! :D) we headed up to the holding room to rest. And then Alyssa left some extra maid outfits from the maid cafe and then...

Eren is blackmailed into wearing one of them. Here he is doing a gravure pose while the process is documented. For science.

Much kawaii

Eren is starting to feel it while heichou continues to deny his true feelings

Pimp Daddy Mikasa

I pimped our photo with stickers to make the description more accurate
Mikasa's girls are top dollar yes good
Heichou is like, "Eren, please, you're embarrassing yourself. That headband doesn't go with that coordinate. And put on some blush, your complexion is so dull."

Can you handle this colossal level of moe

Mikasa taking upskirt shots

Hanji joins in. For science.

Heichou wa Maid-sama onstage performance!

That evening we went back to the hotel and prepared our costumes for the next day. The way we arranged our things is kind of in-character I guess. Hahah!

Second day of HobbyCon! We are Free!

Also, Belle is getting revenge for me nom-ing her head during the previous day

Sorry but I am going to continue nom-ing Jack Frost like an icy dessert

I snapped this photo of them and ran it through an app...

This is what I looked like while brewing evil things

I was using the SwapTeleport app and this is what happened:

brb crying

Group photo with my chubby penguinnnn

Lots of people wanted to kidnap my pinggu

"REI-CHAN! REI-CHAN! PUT THIS ON! Rei-chan, you're a... Rei-ndeer!!"

I also told Haru
"HARU-CHAN! HARU-CHAN! Are you excited because we're going to SABAh?"

The perks of being Nagisa
I can say things like this
I guess we're more alike than I thought

Commemorative purikura for Rei-channnnnnn!

Haru-chan activates yaoi hands for 3-person selfie

Rin-chan does not like to share

Went downstairs to watch The Hikaru Band perform since we noticed they played classics like songs from Rurouni Kenshin and Slam Dunk. When we got there, they played The Beginning by ONE OK ROCK (RuroKen live action theme song) and we FREAKED OUT. So awesome!

Spirit animal butts display

They also played a childhood favorite, Extreme Ghostbusters!
(Secret cosplay want)

At this point we couldn't help running up to the front to properly rock out with the band

For their last song they played... GUREN NO YUMIYA
And we were all like

Of course, during the appropriate times there was a resounding, unified yell of

After getting all sweaty from the adrenaline rush of the performance, we went back around the outside of the VIP area

We were asked to pose for pictures, and we got to hang out a bit with people in the crowd

Shingeki no Free!

Heichou gave us a poster!

Blondies and pingguuuu

Tux Team with Tuxedo Mask!!

We made Yuna LOL because I was like OK I'M TIDUS
And then Makoto and Rei are posing like FFX-2 Yuna

We did a discussion and tutorial on cosplay makeup, and how it helps make you look like different people

Showing examples of Miguel's cosplay vs. crossplay. The reactions were priceless!

The setup was very relaxed and comfortable, so we didn't feel as nervous as usual about speaking onstage.

Part of the enthusiastic crowd!

For some reason, Rin-chan and Haru-chan changed into dresses

Jeez, Rinrin stop crying all the time

From our holding room on the second floor, we had a good view of the event hall because the wall was glass. We saw this bride Eren being proposed to by all the heichous.

The glass didn't hide us so people could see us and wave and pose when I held up my phone

They also made hearts at us, d'awww

Tekken Tag Tournament live battle! This was super exciting!

Haru-chan, please contain yourself

Onstage again for the panel! This time we shared the stage with Tessie and Kitska of Kachang Puteh and awesome costume-maker Nex. We discussed some topics with the hosts, and took questions from the audience. It was like a nice, relaxed talk show. We got the chance to address some issues like dealing with low self-confidence, which a lot of people struggle with. From the cheers we got from our answers, I hope the audience took home more optimism! We also talked about what cosplay means to us and how this simple hobby changed our lives, and others in return.

Rinrin's shark looked happy to be there with us.

Stage selfie with the crowd, hahah! Do you see Jack Frost posing with us?

Smile, everybody!!

After our talk, we ventured outside and got to meet more people

We also grabbed some Oligo chocolate malt drink which we were all kinda obsessed with. Got asked for more pictures while drinking, and then the Iwatobi Photobomb Club attacked!

I pulled the Rasengan app from my phone and derped with Naruto

Time to judge the group cosplay competition, along with the awesome Jna jnalye as X-23!
We saw some really excellent performances, and it inspired us to try doing group skits again!

Our pens for judging were in our spirit colors, heheh

It was the RWBY pair who took home the gold! They were fantastic!!

Trying to channel Nagisa's poses in their winning team photos, hahah

HobbyCon group photo!!

At the end of everything, a special video played onstage, which led to Max's epic proposal to Jna! SO MUCH LOVE

For the afterparty, we derped to Splash Free! as backup dancers while Kachang Puteh sang. We practiced this for a full TWO minutes, hahahah! Watch the video HERE!

LOL, Pedobear lives!

When the event came to a close, we finally got a chance to take pictures with the HobbyCon committee.

We started taking off our contacts to relax more, and then became the Megane Club!

Shariff wanted us to be sexy and fabulous

And then things turned bizarre

Emitting much love and moe beams with Maguro, the head of the Fuwa Fuwa Time maid cafe!

HobbyCon Thoughts

I can't properly condense the entirety of the experience into this journal entry, but we all had a BLAST at HobbyCon, but I think the best part really was just being able to talk and hang out with everyone during the times we weren't onstage.

I can't begin to describe how thankful I am for everyone who took the time to just personally tell us that they appreciate the things we do. We share our photos and writing and artwork online, and while we do hear from people through comments, there's nothing like speaking to someone face to face and seeing the people behind the names. I've lost count of how many times someone told me "I've been following you since [many many years ago]" and it always amazes me that you guys have stuck around all that time. It doesn't always sink in how people from all around the world are able to follow our silly adventures until we actually feel the distance by traveling and meeting these people in a place that is foreign to us. I'm really grateful to everybody for making us feel at home and welcome and for giving us a chance to make you laugh or smile or feel inspired.

It's really heartwarming to think that something that really just started out as a hobby my friends and I do for our own enjoyment has brought so much joy and inspiration to other people, and made them pick themselves up and make themselves and their lives better, all because we decided to share our photos and stories online.

Our sincerest thanks to the HobbyCon team and the sponsors for giving us this chance to experience the wonderful community in Sabah!

Thank you also to everybody who came up to us to talk and hand over letters or presents or hugs! We'll always treasure them and the memories!

We're really happy that HobbyCon was our first international guesting together and we hope this event and the community will continue to thrive and grow! You've given us unforgettable memories and we look forward to visiting again and pulling more of our friends along!

It's time for another outtakes journal post! This one is for our Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) cosplay shoot!

I'm happy to present my friends who had come together to do this group cosplay! It feels surreal to me to have friends who happen to have faces who suit the characters they wanted, and appropriate height differences as well!

This is the biggest group we've attempted! There are actually a total of 15 of us with completed costumes (although not everyone was able to attend this photoshoot) and we have more friends who are going to join.

Unlike other series where the characters aren't in uniform and we could work on our costumes individually, for this one we had to get the same materials (it was sometimes hard to find a kind of fabric that would be enough for all 15 of us) and constantly meet and work together to make our uniforms consistent. In that time we had gotten frustrated (over the impracticality of Isayama's design), lost sleep, fused our fingers with cyanoacrylate, and panicked about getting everything done in time. But we also made each other laugh a lot, learned about each other, and acquired new skills together. I'm really proud of everyone! And I think that this experience gave us a better understanding of our characters, as well as ourselves. :)

The pictures in this journal post are going to get increasingly silly! So let's start!

Here's a normal composed group shot. There will be no more of this hereafter.

Relaxed and fun atmosphere during the shoot! The place is so beautiful it feels like a movie set, but my friends and I just happen to be hanging out in it. We were having a bit of a picnic at this point. We can't function without food, as always!

Obligatory "Jean is a horse" jokes even before poor Jean is finished dressing up!

Jean, don't laugh at everyone because you're used to horse duties.

The lighting kind of looks like something from a stage play, huh?

And so this happened
Shingeki no Miserables

And the love story of Chrisette and Ymirius

I don't know, man. We just can't help these things.

:target: Kono bangumi wa...

We would also like to thank some shops that helped us a lot with our costumes! Hopefully they can make your cosplay lives a little easier as well, hahah!

:bulletred: Studio Boheme
We had our boots custom-made at Studio Boheme. Finding accurate boots was frustrating for us, so we decided to try having them made. Much to our delight, the people at Studio Boheme were actually familiar with Shingeki no Kyojin! They were awesome to work with, and our boots came out excellent! Check them out if you need your own SnK boots, any sort of custom leather things for cosplay, or even apparel for everyday life. I'll put up a detailed review of my SnK boots from them soon! (They take international orders, by the way!)

:bulletred: Den Den Style
Our jackets were made by our friends at Den Den Style! They have the most accurate SnK jackets in structure and color that we've seen anywhere so we had to have our jackets made by them! (Store is on hiatus for now but will be back in January!)

:target: Charity print sale

As I had written about a while back, my friends and I felt that maybe it was time to finally accept print requests as a means of being a fundraiser after the devastation of parts of our country from Typhoon Haiyan. We had been setting up these elaborate photoshoots recently just for fun and out of our love for the series we cosplay, but an opportunity has presented itself for us to turn them into something more meaningful.

And now our store is up! :star: :star:

Profits of our print sales will go to Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts by the Philippine Red Cross and rebuilding the affected areas by Architecture for Humanity.

NOTE! :note: Prints are for pre-order for now and will be shipped out next week because my friends and I will be in Sabah, Malaysia for HOBBYCON for several days!

:target: Thanks for reading!

Don't be afraid to leave comments because I really enjoy reading them! :D

I still have a bunch of shoots I have to share pictures from! Stay tuned!

I am able to update a lot more often on my Facebook page so please feel free to follow me there!

When my friends and I first heard of "that swimming anime" called Free!, this is pretty much what we expected:

Not that there's anything wrong with that hahah, but all we were expecting was to be able to laugh at how exploitable and full of fanservice this show could be because swimming would require everyone to be half-naked. Although it started out that way, the more episodes we watched, the more we realized...

We were wrong. So wrong.

What we got was a heartwarming coming-of-age story with endearing characters and interesting dynamics. It spoke of friendship and learning your self-worth and figuring out what drives you forward.

I'd write more about how I feel about it but it would take up too much time and space over here, so here are a couple of posts that have already done the job well:
1. A detailed literary analysis and trope driven deconstruction of Haruka's progress throughout the story - A long read, but well worth it. Full of spoilers if you haven't seen the anime!
2. Lessons learned in Free! - Short and sweet, and also full of spoilers. Watch first!

As some of you might know, when my friends and I love a series, we feel a great need to cosplay it. So this happened:

:iconbehindinfinity: Jin - Haruka "They Made Me Do It" Nanase
:iconmerkymerx: Miguel - Makoto "Guess Where My Other Hand Is" Tachibana

Iwatobi summer uniform shirts from our friends at DenDen Style!

Another thing about my friends is that our shoots are 90% outtakes. And that's what this journal post is for. Hahah!

Some of the crack related to this shoot started days before we had it.

A day before the shoot, I was walking around the mall on the way to a meeting and a guy picks me out of a crowd of people to give me this. He said, "You look like the kind of person who suits this." and I'm just like WHAT HARU STOP CONSUMING MY SOUL

On the morning of the shoot, my life turned into…

This was a funny photo session before the real shoot, which started with Miguel asking me for permission to change clothes in another room. I was like "Yeah, I'll lead you there." Our fujoshi friends (who happened to be two of the photogs for the day) perked up and were like, "Change? Room? Can we go with you guys? With our cameras?" Hilarity ensued.

Best friends know just what to say
to make things really awkward

Miguel was my headcanon for Makoto since I started watching the anime, so it made me happy when he said that Mako was his favorite. Also that a lot of you have also been commenting on how much he looks like a real-life Makoto. (That's how he acts towards me so I can't help my perception being a little biased, hahah)

It's funny how we weren't even fully dressed yet but when I started working on his wig, we could hear our friends snapping away with their cameras already. Miguel was like, "What a nostalgic feeling, eh?"

Angles are important. Our friends are true fujoshi photographers. Fujographers, even.

When I saw this top shot I was like "WHEN DID WE-" Then after I saw the pictures that followed, I realized it was from the time I was fixing Miguel's wig.

This is what actually happened.
Kat neko-panigiri you have trolled me well done.

Kat and Charmie got "inspired" when we were doing the wig-styling and composed this shot.

I started posting some pictures on my Facebook page (Feel free to follow if you want more instant and frequent updates!) and this thread happened on one of the photos

"See, it has a camera you can use to take pictures of things you want to remember"

"Haru..! You want a picture of us?"

And now for some previews of future shoots

I attended a convention last month in which I was tremendously spoiled by shops with Free! merchandise

Hatah Hatah gave me this awesome Iwatobi Swim Club shirt (Iwatobi-chan Secret Version!) and also this Iwatobi-chan hat!

That is Haru's game face don't laugh

And then Cotton Candy Shirts gave me and my friends the shirts they were wearing in the Splash Free ED! We'll definitely be doing those versions now!

Free! may have ended and we'll have to make our own "water time" for now, but I'm really thankful for that anime and the people who watched it and drowned in the tsunami of Free!lings and emoceans with me. I know the series hit me hard because I have bonds that made me identify so much with the characters. What swimming is for them, cosplay is to us. It's something that brought us together and we continue to share because it's something we enjoy with each other. Even though cosplay is by nature something fun and silly, it's able to inspire and cause a lot of emotions, it leads to us meeting friends we will come to treasure, it gives us chances to learn things about ourselves, and sometimes our bonds are tested but with the right people it ultimately brings you closer together no matter what. :cheese: :cheese: :cheese: :cheese: :cheese:

To end this on a funnier note, I was laughing so much at people on Facebook shipping me and Miguel as Haru and Makoto and calling it their cosplay OTP. It got me imagining us saying Makoto and Haru's lines like

"Cosplay is meaningless without you!"

"That was how I remembered how it felt to cosplay the same series together... It made me... just as happy!!"

HAHAHA I am so done 。゚(TヮT)゚。

Okay no I'm not

Here I am trying to get over the Free! finale, and I look outside and see that the sky is perfectly...

Now I'm done

Jinjin-chan-san OUT
Group cosplay, forever alone style! Yeah, that's all me.
In this post, I'll get into how I did each one!

Intro, and some bad old pictures

For those of you who have the patience to read for some extra info!

When I started cosplaying, I didn't think makeup was such a major part of it. I was so hesitant to even put eyeliner because I'd think, "This character is a guy, I shouldn't look like I'm wearing makeup!" And I guess I was silly enough to think I looked enough like the characters I chose without doing anything to my face?

I can't find more pictures of my really old cosplays (which is just as well, hahah) from the time I didn't want to use makeup apart from these:

I cosplayed as Haku from Naruto. I don't remember wearing any makeup for this. It doesn't show too well on these pictures but I saw some others where the natural redness of my lips made it look like I was wearing lipstick even if I wasn't. I felt it made me look more feminine than I should. Haku is still a guy after all, but it wasn't too bad because he's supposed to look like a trap. Still, I made a mental note then to do something about it when cosplaying manlier characters.

When I did Light Yagami from Death Note, I learned to use concealer and foundation powder to even out my skintone. I also used a skin-colored lipstick to neutralize the reddish color of my lips. I didn't really want to use eyeliner around this time.

Death Note: Sunday Morning by behindinfinity

I think it was cosplaying Naruto that really got me to take makeup more seriously because he looks really different from how I naturally look. I had to wear a blond wig for the first time, so I didn't feel right with my black eyebrows. He has big eyes with a very pronounced shape so I had to try simulating that with eyeliner. And of course, the characteristic whisker markings on his face.

It depends on the character too, I think. I generally use more eyeliner and try to go for a really even complexion for anime characters to emulate the look of the 2D art without taking it too literally. But for movie/book cosplay, I take a different approach.

Take my Harry Potter cosplay, for instance. I kind of mixed the book descriptions for Harry with Daniel Radcliffe's depiction of him in the movies:

I skipped using concealer because Dan has pronounced eyebags, which works for Harry's character (being constantly troubled and tormented and trying to save the world and all). I also gave special attention to the eyebrows and tried to shape mine like Dan's. I often get asked about how I do my eyebrows.

I use a brush with stiff, angled bristles. I take whatever pigment I have on hand, such as eyebrow pencils or powdered eyeshadows in different colors, then use this to draw on my over my real eyebrows. This kind of brush makes it easy to control the shape and apply the pigment in a way that the edges aren't sharp so it looks more natural.

So that's probably a long enough intro for this post! Hahah! Bottom line: Makeup is cool because it helps you change the way you look. And that's part of what's fun about cosplay — Being able to transform yourself from the way you usually look.

I'm realizing now that I don't have a lot of "normal" photos but here's one of me with no makeup and no contact lenses, for the sake of comparison. (I'm nearsighted so those are my prescription glasses)

Free! Cosplay Challenge

One day I thought it'd be a fun exercise on flexibility to cosplay different characters from the same series, all by myself. It would be an amusing way to illustrate how angles, expressions and makeup can help one person depict different characters. Using only the wigs and clothes I have at home, I decided to try cosplaying the main characters of the anime, Free!

Haruka Nanase

His eyes are narrower and angle upwards more than the other characters.
His face is usually indifferent.

Here is myself as Haru

This is how I did the eye makeup, which is a little different from my usual style. Eyeliner makes such a big impact on giving your eyes a different shape.

I also chose a vibrant blue lens because Haruka has bright blue eyes that contrast with his dark hair. The lenses I used are the Ocean Blue Cosplay Lenses from Alice and Rabbit's Shop, where I get most of my lenses. :)

Here's a clearer shot of the lenses, and also a look at my eyes when they're lined differently.

I based the clothes I wore on one of Haruka's casual outfits. I'll be basing my Makoto look (coming up next) on this outfit here too.

Makoto Tachibana

Although his height is intimidating, he always has a kind look on his face. He has the classic "tareme" / droopy puppy dog eyes that indicate a gentle person.

Here's my take on Makoto. I didn't have a kitten like the one he's seen with but I do have a puppy.

I usually downplay my eye creases for cosplay, but this time I added some shading on top to emphasize them. I also drew my eyeliner downwards to mimic Makoto's eye shape.

The eyebrows were kind of an extra challenge for me since Makoto has really kind-looking eyebrows that curve upwards towards the center, while mine naturally angle downwards (which usually lead people to think I look mean). I kind of imagined Mako to have thick eyebrows so I rolled with that. I draw them extra thick on the top part near the center to fight against the downward curve of my real eyebrows. Then for the photos, I raised them up (like the way you would when you're surprised, hahah) to give a kinder facial expression. This also helped make my eye crease more visible.

The lenses I used are Emerald Green Cosplay Lenses. It's a nice leaf green shade that fits with Makoto's eyes.

Most other lenses that are opaque enough to show on my dark eyes are in a blue-green shade, like this one:

The pattern of this also looks like it would be better suited for a more intense and aggressive character. I don't know if most people would think I'm crazy for taking that into account, but I do like to consider the pattern when choosing contact lenses for a character.

I was looking for blue-green lenses for Eren Jaeger (from Attack on Titan) and this one had a good color but I don't think the flower pattern suits him all that much. Don't you agree?

Nagisa Hazuki

Resident shota, LOL. He's the smallest and youngest-looking of the bunch. Energetic sparkly personality.

This was very difficult for me. It's hard to be shota, bro. I struggled. And I kind of want to punch myself for making these faces. Doing this hurt me a little. Ahahahah! The way Nagisa acts is just really a stretch from how I actually am.

I made my cheeks look rounder with the way I smiled. I describe it as pushing my face meats up by giving a tight smile. This also made my upper lip look thinner, which I guess kind of works for Nagisa. I don't know if this will work for everyone, but the point is to observe how certain facial expressions affect the shape of your face, and use them to your advantage when you can. :D

I made the eyeliner rounder and softer at the outer edges. I used a pencil liner for the outer corners so I smudged it a bit for that softer look. I also put some highlighting pigments around the eyes for extra sparkly wide-eyed youthful uguu shota join-the-swim-club-or-I'll-cry feels. My descriptions are so technical and pro.

But okay, to elaborate properly (sort of) I think the highlights around the eyes helped a lot because it downplays the shadows on my face. If shadows make features look more sunken, then theoretically, highlights should do the opposite.

Nagisa's eyes are in a complicated sort of magenta shade. I compromised by using my Crystal Max Red Lenses. Although they are technically red, the shade is dark and the larger-than-usual size of these lenses gives the glowing crescent effect on the bottom of my irises. The halo effect comes out pink, so they worked okay for Nagisa.

To explain the halo effect:

The coloring on the Crystal Max Red is semi-transparent, so it lets the white part show through a bit at the bottom. This is also why the lens diameter is important. I think the average diameter for irises are about 14mm. The lenses I used for Haruka and Makoto are 14.2mm, so they're only slightly enlarging. These ones are 14.8mm in diameter.

Rei Ryugazaki

He has somewhat rectangular-shaped eyes and is easily disgruntled, hahah. He normally has a serious look about him (which doesn't reflect what he's actually like).

Apart from the eyeliner style, I didn't have to change much for Rei, so this section will be relatively short.

Here's an outline of the eyeliner shape. I extended it past the normal length of my eyes. It feels a little weird at first but it looks fine from a moderate distance.

It's kind of like what I did on the upper left photo:
(And here are other examples as well of how I line my eyes for different cosplays)

The lenses I used are Crystal Max Violet. They have a nice lavender shade that fits with Rei's eye color. Again, my eyes are very dark brown (which looks black when not in direct sunlight) and they show up well on me.

Lastly, Rin Matsuoka

I usually end up cosplaying the protagonist, so I was excited and anxious to attempt Rin, who is completely different from characters I'm used to portraying.

Jin as Rin. Hahah! It looks like I have Rin's school uniform, but that's actually the top I used for my Ulquiorra cosplay!

If you're wondering about the teeth: Those are my natural teeth. They're pretty strangely shaped (but I like them) and I'm just not used to smiling with them, but I decided to show them off this time because it's character-appropriate!

See? They are pointier along the sides so I angled my face so they'd be more visible.

Look at all those scribbles! I did some crazy things to change the look of my eyes. I drew my eyeliner extra thick to cover up my natural crease, then I drew on a fake crease which to me looked more like Rin's. I also added some shading between the crease and my eyebrows to make it appear more realistic. You have to pay special attention to how they look at certain angles and expressions though, especially if you are posing for photos. Notice how in the left photo on the two pictures of me as Rin, the eye creases look a lot smaller than on the right where I raised my eyebrows a bit and shot from a lower angle.

Half my eyebrows here are drawn on, because I wanted them to angle upwards to look extra mean. I used Kryolan eyebrow wax to flatten half my eyebrows then piled concealer on top to hide them. Then I drew on the other half with a cream pigment from my Ben Nye wheel, using an angular eyebrow brush.

The lenses I used for Rin were the limited edition red prescription lenses from A&R. I chose these instead of the red ones I used for Nagisa because it's a brighter red, which is like Rin's eye color. The diameter is also smaller, so it gives my eyes more of a mean look compared to Nagisa's big sparkly eyes.

Closing notes

Now, I've never been properly trained in makeup or anything like that, so this is all just coming from someone who learned to use makeup by thinking of them as drawing materials. (Eyeliners are like ink brushes or colored pencils, eyeshadow is like chalk pastel, lip pigments are paints, etc.) It is questionable if my methods are correct, but I just wanted to share how I go about things and I thought it could serve as a guideline for you guys to think of how to manage it for yourselves. :)

These techniques will also work differently for people with different eye or face shapes so it's best for you to experiment on your own face or with your friends. It's fun!

The amount of makeup you use, and how you want to interpret features on anime characters is entirely up to you. Everyone's got different preferences. Like some people find drawing the eye crease weird, but it works for some people. But it's all really up to you! :D You just have to try things and find a look that you feel comfortable with. And don't judge yourself until you've got your wig and everything on and have finished the entire look, because I certainly felt like a fool in the middle of doing some of these. By that I mean Rin

It was a fun challenge to take on, and I hope to try it with other series!

Other places to follow my updates
I don't often get to post here lately because I use my gallery here mainly for proper shoot photos and we'll be doing that later in the year so it's pretty quiet here right now. My friends and I are still working on our new costumes! If you want to follow our progress, cosplay previews, or random shenanigans, I suggest you follow me on Facebook where my snapshots usually end up! It's a lot easier to update there from my phone too so I get to update regularly. :D

Cosplay photo blog for ToyCon 2013!

Mon Jun 17, 2013, 7:53 PM
ToyCon 2013!

So we went to Toycon last Saturday and as usual I... didn't really get to take pictures of toys and stuff. It was so crowded around the merchandise hall that I couldn't stop and take photos because people were constantly threading through and shoving. It was like a river of people with an actual current, hahah! Sometimes I'd find a friend to chat with but we'd eventually be pulled apart by the tide, it was kind of funny.

I wanted to wear something simple and comfortable so I posted on my Facebook that I would wear my old Ichigo cosplay in his Karakura High uniform. The Bleach manga is so crazy now that it just made me miss the days when Bleach was simple.

I think this is the last decent picture of myself that I have wearing this, and it was taken ages ago.

And here it is on me again, with a new wig, better contact lenses, better wig styling and cosplay makeup skills (somewhat), and Kon plush that was given to me as a present by one of my readers. I snapped this on my camera to check if my makeup and stuff looked alright on camera. And then I decided I needed to put more eyeliner, which you'll see after a couple of images below this.

The contact lenses I used are Jewel Hazel Brown from Alice and Rabbit's Shop :pointr:…

I posted this picture before leaving my house. I said that Heading over to ToyCon with my toy... Kon... pfffftttt
My friends want to maim me for my puns sometimes

Here's a reference image for this outfit. I had a shirt in a similar color but it doesn't have a white collar. Ah well, close enough for now! What's kind of funny is that we actually have Ichigo's bag by chance, which we used in this shoot:
Bleach: The Usual Suspects by behindinfinity
It's with Kat moonlightflight though and I didn't get to borrow it from her in time, but for next time at least. :XD:

And here's the pic with MOAR EYELINER. For those of you who wanted to see what I did with eyeliner and stuff for Ichigo, here's a look at it. The way Ichigo's eyes are drawn, they kind of slant downwards at the outer corners so I pulled my liner down that way and used brown for the outer edges and for the bottom part. I like using brown nowadays for cosplay because it looks less stark than black, and if I had used black for everything I might have looked emo or something since the bottom part was lined and smudged out.

I used colored eyebrow mascara (yes there is such a thing) to make my eyebrows an orangeish light brown and also extended them in a way that I'd look perpetually grumpy like Ichigo, hahaha.

On to ToyCon! I'll be borrowing pictures from my friend Marko Happy-Hario and Peppy ninjapeps, which you can identify by their watermarks! The rest are just snapshots from my phone.

Since it is ToyCon, here are some toys: Pervert Woody harassing Mari Makinami

I'm happy I got to help with neko-panigiri Kat's toy haul by pointing her to Wakuwaku because I spotted this rare Nijiiro Kuma Kuma item and I remember she cosplayed that version of Ranka!

I always find the coolest random merch at Wakuwaku, you guys should check them out! Kuya Joma goes to Japan every now and then to stock up on items so there's often lots to see from figures, plushes, toys, J-music CDs, photobooks, doujins, dakimakuras, etc. They have a store at 2nd Floor FBR Arcade 317 Katipunan Avenue (the building with Yellow Cab)

Eren Jaeger = Ed Elric. Seems legit if you think about it.
Amputee, driven to their purpose by losing their mother, missing father who knows something about the mystery of the plot...

I snapped a very few pictures of merch to show my friends who weren't there to ask if they wanted anything.

Like this giant Cake the Cat plush!

Or these Doctor Who shirts from Geekerie Shirts! I managed to grab one of the last TARDIS shirts for my friend.

There was this amazing Red Skull bust at Maxicollector. But if you look at him at a certain angle he's like, "How YOU doin'?"

I snapped Miguel :iconmerkymerx: posing with it and added some stickers to make Red Skull more fab

Here is Miguel being super manly with Zod

I am so done with this

We were hoping to see some Man of Steel costumes and were stoked that it was Wreidyl as Zod and Monette as Faora! (Their page: MonetteAndWreidylCosplay on FB) We admire their work and they looked fantastic!

We also ran into Spider-Dan! It was only proper that they take a Spidey-style selfie, hahah

Before leaving the convention hall to take a break, I was lucky enough to run into Dan, who came all the way from Canada! She sent me a message on my Tumblr that she'd be at ToyCon and hoped to at least take a photo with me and we actually crossed paths in the chaos of that crowd! She was super cool and sweet and gave us MLP trading cards :D

Emperor Donrobert and Dom :iconweakman: as fanboying Chi-Fu, with Marko's elite photo editing skillzzzz
I suggested we start doing this pose with cosplayers and Dom and Marko have taken a LOT of shots like this HAHAH

I was subjected to it as well

Kevin of as the dashing Mr. Stark

Of course he had to get the Chi-Fu treatment

Even Ryan chaoslithe as Khal Drogo was not spared from it

Jewel of Chesto Shirts, however

...would not simply accept being made the Emperor

Spider-Dan vs. SpiDom-Man!

Then even MORE Chi-Fu pics!

This isn't even all of them okay hahahahahah

Here are some of my favorite costumes from Toycon!

Prince of Persia wall-jumping action!

Sage Kabuto by Markee shinobimarkee (look at the cute snake!) who was Orochimaru in my previous journal entry — Sasuke's Picture Diary

Khal Drogo and Jon Snow cosplay by Ryan and Fred!

Kawaiilossal Titan!

If I saw that looking down at me over the wall...

Coke-lossal Titan

I don't know anymore, you give it a name

We ducked into Starbucks to refresh ourselves because it was nearby and we were meeting more friends there. Got a frap so I could legitimately say "I ARRIVED 15 MINUTES LATE WITH STARBUCKS" The barista didn't ask for my real name and this is what they wrote on the cup. Awesome!

Since there is always a lot of us hanging out, we've made a game of trying to take self-portraits in which the whole group fits in the frame. This started due to doing this with viospace hahah! (We miss you, Vio bb~)

Luckily I didn't

This one kind of worked I guess

Charmie's version

Good guys with grumpy faces! Hahah!! So glad Alvin finally got to do this cosplay! When we watched the movie, we couldn't help seeing the resemblance, and we even gave him a Wreck-It Ralph toy on his birthday to encourage him to go for it!

Dom :iconweakman:, carrying his spanking new Play Arts Raiden around like a BJD hahahah

Aki Hana181 is Derp Strider. The number of decent pictures we have together is zero.

We were discussing new gadgets, and the 2013 Mac Pro came up. Then we noticed something beside us that looked a lot like it.

Dirk does not approve

Some food pictures just because. Spicy tuna salad is one of my favorite things.

Katsu curry ramen which made me inordinately happy because of the naruto (fishcake) which a lot of places don't bother with

Dinnerrrrrr group shot! It was our first decent meal of the day over which we did more hanging out and stalking Gerard Way on Vine

The previous photo was taken by everyone's favorite titan photographer, who can take overhead shots with ease because of his height. Kel got this picture of him doing his creeper smile.

And then I turned it into this:

Shingeki no Kyojin everywhere, man. Even my friend who wasn't cosplaying was jokingly asked if he was from SnK. So we put together this ghetto-ass 3DMG made of laptop bags and he took Aki's sword and I did this on my SnK app

Took more phone pics before leaviiiing. I'm not tall like Erving but I managed somehow. Except for the other half of Resh's face I'm sorry

With darling Charmie yaoiangel14

With my home bro and someone's hand

With Rayson (who has a new shirtttt), Erving and Pretty-chan

Before heading hope, we dropped by Jamba Juice because I wanted a smoothie, and when the guy at the counter asked for my name, his buddy who was making the drinks went up to him and said "DON'T YOU KNOW? That's Ichigo!!" Fun day!

Story of my life upon getting home. SOB. Post-con blues.
(The household disorder on the second frame is kind of accurate too because I left when I was in the middle of rearranging my room.)
Ah well, we'll see each other again soon enough!

Sasuke's Picture Diary

Tue Apr 16, 2013, 9:24 PM
Leave comments to keep me company?

I am about to spend the next 6 hours or so sewing and painting to finish up costumes and then packing for an adventure. I will soon after leave for the trip and it's going to take a while to get to where I'm going to it'd be great if you leave comments to keep me company on the way there! I'll be reading and replying as much as possible! :D

Team Sasuke at Ozine Fest Day 3

So here are pictures from our day out last Sunday! Some are from my phone, others are from Facebook friends (Thanks, Jannibee and Benelyn!) and people who have sent me snapshots over Twitter!

Let's start with a group shot! Our theme was Sasuke and his teachers (and his flirt of an alternate universe self from Road to Ninja)

12 year-old pre-Shippuden Sasuke — Jin :iconbehindinfinity:
older Swagsuke/Charasuke from the Road to Ninja movie — Miguel :iconmerkymerx:
Hatake Kakashi — Dom :iconweakman:
Orochimaru — Markee :iconshinobimarkee:

On my Facebook page, I had posted wig progress like I usually do before cons or shoots. Here are some progress shots of my progress for Kakashi. It started out as a somewhat flat, chin-length wig.

I had also been styling a new Naruto wig (my old one had needed to retire), and a Sasuke wig. I guess people assumed I would be Naruto as usual, hahah.

Related post: new Naruto wig in action during our viewing of the Road to Ninja movie:
Revisiting Naruto cosplay + Road to Ninja Movie! So I've heard of this film for a long while, but never got to watch it for lack of a proper subbed copy/DVD release. (There was that Korean dubbed one that some people watched online, but Naruto has my favorite Japanese voice acting so I didn't want to watch it any other way!)
Sometime last month, some happy news reached our shores — Road to Ninja would be showing at our local cinemas!! I know it's been a while since its first release but I'm glad I waited before resorting to well, less legal ways of watching it! Hahah! Here is a stupid rap I wrote and slapped on a manga panel:
Would Killer Bee be proud of me? HAHAH
Premiere Night!
I had the honor of being invited to the special advanced screening at Director's Club before it hit the cinemas! Major thanks to Ica and Movie Punch for having us over!
I dressed up as Minato (the Fourth Hokage) and Marien dressed up as

Duckbutt hair is fun
(And a guy is getting a peek at Kakashi-sensei's true face)

Marko Happy-Hario cosplaying as Masashi Kishimoto HAHAH

I was not aware that we were asked to pose for pictures in front of a backdrop of cupcakes and ice cream.

As much as I enjoy being Naruto, it was a nice change of pace to be Saucekay.

Although for most of the day I tried to keep my facial expression more Sasuke-like, I couldn't help smiling when this little guy came up to me

Sasuke's picture diary

Dear diary,
Today my teachers took me on a day out.

Kakashi-sensei brought me to Jamba Juice before Chidori training. Because he says that to call upon A Thousand Birds (Chidori), you must fill your body with fruit.

We made a detour before proceeding with training.
Kakashi-sensei, you are going to get us killed.

Chidori training begins! Kakashi-sensei taught me Chidori today, with the help of Mr. Stark. I'm not sure if he was alright in the end...

I also got the chance to learn from foreign people like Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo

Khal Drogo taught me about being the stallion who mounts the world

Ib and Garry taught me about art.

I went to a cafe with Orochimaru. He had me drink more milk to grow big and strong. (There is a joke I could make about sucking but I'll keep it in my head)

I got to spend time with my older self. I'm not sure how to feel about him.

He may be just as bad as Kakashi-sensei

I can't seem to finish my drink without interruptions

I think it had some sort of effect because everyone was like

I wonder if it would have been different if they got a good look at the bag I was carrying. You're judging me too, aren't you? It was a gift from the nin-cats who serve my clan!

Kakashi-sensei treated me to dinner after a long day.
He was unmasked but my hair covered the view of his face.

Practical application of Katon Goukakyuu no Jutsu: PASS!

"Usuratonkachi, look at what's for dinner when you're not around"

(I think it's time to pull a frame from our most recent Naruto shoot)

"They're... having ramen without me..."

I usually post pictures from my phone when we're out derping around in cosplay, hahah! And a lot of that is going to be happening this week!

I had the honor of being invited to the special advanced screening at Director's Club before it hit the cinemas! Major thanks to Ica and Movie Punch for having us over!

I dressed up as Minato (the Fourth Hokage) and Marien dressed up as Tsunade (the Fifth Hokage) for the premiere.

We definitely got the Hokage treatment!

These seats are intensely comfortable, and seats were very limited so we could enjoy the private viewing

Here I am being a proud stage dad, waiting to watch son's movie!

Ica is performing... Kawaii no Jutsu?

Road to Ninja shirts from Sir Sam!

More premiere night photos on Ica's blog post!

Upon getting home, I tried on my new shirt and prepared a different outfit to watch the movie for the second time, with more of my friends on the following afternoon!

First Regular Screening Day!

On the way to Megamall! (It's hard to take non-blurry photos while the car is moving)

Obligatory pictures in front of the giant poster! (Dear SM Cinema, may I keep one when it's done? Hahaha!) Look at my father Minato, always behind me.

I dressed up as Naruto this time, so I could be a butt and tell people "Thank you for watching my movie!" Miguel :iconmerkymerx: dressed up as Sasuke, and Charmie yaoiangel14 as Hinata — their alternate versions in the movie, that is!

Please send me a photo if you're one of the people who took pictures with us while we were here! :D

We're not hating on One Piece, this just seemed like an appropriate pose for a bunch of ninjas in front of the One Piece movie poster, hahah!

Took some photos after most people left after the movie. (It was a full house!) We stayed behind because we needed to compose ourselves after all the crying hahaha! I was like, "Are my whiskers still here?"

Super Bushy Brows Sensei dynamic entry!

Appropriate craving for the day. Miso chashu ramen.

Snacktime with AU friends after the movie! Eating the naruto from my ramen!

Now with Swagsuke, with appropriate sparkles
The fishcake I'm eating looks like my mouth hahah

Noodleyface photo

Some of my friends who watched with me <3 There were a dozen of us (including the others not in this shot) and we took up the entire center front row of the balcony in the cinema, hahah!

Naruto. Naruto everywhere.

I can do that too, Iron Man!

This is why I never get an outfit change.
Meanwhile, after every major fight, Sasuke gets a new costume.
/pouts at Mr. Kishimoto
(But nah, hahah my costume didn't come from here!)

Went to the toy store and posed with my younger self!

With friendssss!

After we took these shots, a bunch of kids wanted to get pictures with me too. So sweet, hahah. There was a bit of a commotion but I don't think the Toy Kingdom people minded much!

Great way to end the day before we left to chill at one of our secret hideouts!

That's two Naruto characters I've cosplayed again this week. One more to go for next Sunday at Ozine Fest! (It's not Deidara yet!)

Non-Spoiler Impressions of Road to Ninja

I haven't seen all of the other Naruto movies, because the few I had watched just felt like long filler episodes with random foreign characters unrelated to the main story. This was different!

What initially drew me into this movie was that Minato and Kushina, Naruto's father and mother, were on the poster! I adore those two and always want to see more of them, so just the fact that they would be appearing in this installment was enough reason for me to watch it!

I appreciated that this film is something that could fit into the canon timeline of events. Maybe not in an entirely perfect way, but it is a welcome addition to me.

The best part of the film actually wasn't the main plot or the final battle with the main villain. It was all the little moments and the exploration of things that could have been, which really hit me right in the feelings. If you are able to come home to place with a warm meal and something more than the hum of electricity to greet you, you may learn to appreciate it more.

This film had us crying at one moment, and laughing hysterically a minute after, and then crying again. It was a rollercoaster of emotions which ultimately brought our favorite characters closer to our hearts.

It was fantastic getting to watch this on the big screen, and surrounded by my friends. We could react together, along with the entire cinema who cheered and laughed (and sniffled) with us! I always enjoy observing how people respond to certain scenes, like how fangirl squeals erupted when Sasuke appeared on screen  And the reactions when the Akatsuki get involved in a most unexpected way!

For those of you in the Philippines, you can catch Road to Ninja in SM Cinemas! Check this page to check schedules at your local theater! :pointr:…

So yeah, I loved the movie! My only wish is that we could have seen more of their classmates, hahah! Definitely getting a copy when the DVD comes out!

Alice and Rabbit's Shop has a new set of lenses and it's about time I replaced some of my older ones so I'll be talking about this new set! This series is called Cosplay Plus Lens.

:bulletblue: Store link: CosPlus Lenses on A&R Shop

The Cosplay Plus lens is a larger variant of Alice and Rabbit Shop's popular Cosplay Lens series.
You may read my review of the Cosplay Lens series HERE

Let's take a look at one of my favorites from the Cosplay Plus set, which I'll now refer to as CosPlus. Here's a look at CosPlus Grey:

The pattern is very similar to the original Cosplay Lens, however they differ greatly in diameter.

Cosplay Lenses — 14.2 mm
CosPlus Lenses — 14.8 mm

0.6 mm might not seem like a lot, but for something tiny like a contact lens, the difference is significant.

For your reference — My natural eye color is very dark brown. They practically look black except when strong light hits them.

Sorry about the quality of this photo; I took this as the sun was going down. But it's enough to illustrate the difference between CosPlus and the original Cosplay Lenses.

1. CosPlus has a larger diameter, so it makes the eyes appear larger as compared to the Cosplay Lens which is closer to the iris' natural size.
2. CosPlus has a larger space in the center which allows your natural eye color to come through. For people with naturally dark eyes (like me) it gives the illusion of large pupils. Cosplay Lens has a smaller center space, which will conceal practically all of the natural eye color.
3. Both are striking, clearly visible light greys, but the Cosplay Lens has a lighter and more intense color. I think it's a pretty good lens for a more natural take on Byakugan.

In terms of cosplay, they might be suitable for different kinds of characters. When choosing lenses, I observe the way characters are drawn.

I will be using CosPlus Grey for Deidara, based on how he looks in the anime.
Notice how his pupils are large. While his data says his eyes are blue, I personally feel that blue lenses are usually too bright for his eye color. I think they meant something like blue-grey, like the eye color of some naturally blue-eyed people.

Meanwhile, I used the Icy Grey Cosplay Lens for my cosplay of the Protagonist / Yu Narukami from Persona 4
He has very intense, light grey eyes with small pupils.

That's how I choose to do it anyway. :) You don't need to follow this, but I wanted to share anyway!

Anyway, back to the lenses!

Here is how the CosPlus Grey lenses look on me.

Phone snapshot to show that even without advanced camera settings and fancy lighting, they are quite visible.

I thought I'd throw in this shot of how they look with direct sunlight.

The next color is CosPlus Golden. Here are some photos to show the lens pattern, which is quite nice.

Creepy closeup under harsh lighting, just to show the pattern clearly. The dark brown in the center is my natural eye color.

Photo taken with some diffused sunlight near a window. This photo shows the halo effect this lens gives on the bottom part (that crescent shape in which the color looks slightly lighter)

Golden hazel-colored lenses used to frustrate me because other lenses tend to be too brown or banana yellow. Alice and Rabbit's hazel is fantastic for golden-eyed characters. Bright enough to be more than brown, but not like unnatural yellows.

I think these would be excellent for cosplaying Ryota Kise from Kuroko no Basket

Others examples include Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, Alto from Macross Frontier and Yoko from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

They are still very visible at a moderate distance

Shows up very well on my phone snapshots, too

Not all lenses in this series are quite the same, it seems. The next color is CosPlus Blue.

The pigment in CosPlus blue seems more transparent than the other lenses in this series, which keeps it from being a very bright blue all throughout. As you might be able to tell from my photo, most of my eye looks like a darker blue than usual.

However, the glowing crescent effect at the bottom is more prominent compared to the CosPlus Grey and CosPlus Hazel.

I think they still do look nice, but you shouldn't expect them to be as intensely visible as other colors in the CosPlus range.

I imagine these lenses would probably suit characters with large, dark blue eyes such as Sailor Neptune.

Here is a comparison between CosPlus Blue and Crystal Max Blue, which is my current favorite for cosplaying characters with bright blue eyes such as Naruto.

Here's how they look when worn. Crystal Max Blue comes out a much lighter and brighter shade.

The next color is a similar case: CosPlus Turquoise

Turquoise is one of my favorite colors, and this is such a beautiful shade. I don't usually come across turquoise lenses. However, this is not for people with dark eyes who are expecting a very bright color. I feel like it might look nice on those with lighter blue or green eyes, though.

Here's how they look when not in an extreme close-up. They blend into my dark eyes so they're not as vibrant as  the others. I think they'd be beautiful lenses if you were to do a portrait shoot with ample lighting, or would like to use them as everyday lenses.

The effect is subtle but I think they look quite nice.

It's such a beautiful, unusual color! They also give that glowing crescent effect at the bottom.

And I'm sorry for my face again, but I need to show how their overall effect ^^;

The last color I'll cover for this set is CosPlus Violet. The question is — WILL IT BLEND?

Just see for yourself  These are outstanding violet lenses. Violet is a dark color on the intensity scale so my experience with violet lenses in the past was that they'd just blend into my eyes and look like a muddy brown. I'm looking at you, FreshLook These however, are in a light lavender color that really stands out.

Will they show up on my phone? Yup!

Even in slightly backlit conditions, they're visible.

Here is a comparison between CosPlus Violet and Crystal Max Violet

1. Although they are both listed as having a 14.8mm diameter, the CosPlus lens looks larger to me. Maybe it's got something to do with the design, or perhaps the CosPlus really is slightly larger.
2. They are pretty much tied in terms of color intensity.
3. The large pupil makes CosPlus look more kind and innocent.

It makes me think of a certain character. Who has large, kind, lavender eyes?

I think I'll start using these lenses for when I cosplay anime Kenshin. Let's practice:

The CosPlus Lenses are currently limited on stocks because Alice and Rabbit weren't sure if a lot of people would like them. That's also why they don't readily come in prescription just yet. If there is enough interest for them, perhaps that will change!

If you like the CosPlus Lenses, let Alice and Rabbit know on their Facebook page! Or you could also drop a comment here and I'll ask them to take a look here. :D

Okay so I'll end this with some basic info about the CosPlus Lenses:
:bulletblue: Only available non-graded for now
:bulletblue: You can use them for 1 year after you've opened the vials
:bulletblue: If you've never worn lenses before, get your go signal from an eye doctor before trying any!

Everything here is my honest opinion! I wasn't paid or anything to do this. I just wanted to share. :)

Thanks for looking! As always, sorry about so many pictures of my face! I don't particularly enjoy looking at myself staring right back at me on my computer screen but what can I do

I've got a bunch of other updates coming up! May the universe grant me time and energy to post about them! I hope you'll stay tuned! Until the next update, see you!

Some months ago, a rumor surfaced that they would be showing the Rurouni Kenshin live action movie at our theaters here in the Philippines. After some weeks of torture, we were finally given an official confirmation and screening date! The day they started selling tickets online, I got a bunch for me and my friends, even though it was a couple of months too early, hahah!

Nearing the screening date, I received a wonderful surprise from :iconup-ame:

They invited me to be a guest and cosplay competition judge for Swordplay, a Rurouni Kenshin fan event, and also to the special advanced screening days before the official screening date. I've often thought that if there is one cosplay I would like people to remember me by, it would be Kenshin. I was very honored and touched that they had thought of including me to a day celebrating a series that means so much to me, and a movie I had been looking forward to for ages.

My friends and I had decided since the news of the movie screening that we would watch in costume. I dressed up in my Hitokiri Battousai cosplay for the event. Miguel merkymerx helped me step up the detail of my scar makeup. I wanted it to look like it was freshly cut and still painful, the way it was during the Trust and Betrayal OVA. We still need more practice, but it was enough to make me wince at my reflection sometimes.

Propping up my sword beside me while I got ready as one of the judges for the cosplay competition.

This is actually not my proper sword for Hitokiri Battousai, but I couldn't bring metal props into the venue. This katana was crafted by AC Karumaru, and it's made of wood. It's for a different character I'll be cosplaying. Do you recognize whose sword it is?

I'm always happy to see Rurouni Kenshin cosplayers since it's not such a regular sight anymore, so it was great for them to have a RuroKen cosplay competition. Here are just some of the contestants that were photographed by my contacts on FB:

Himura Kenshin

Sagara Sanosuke

Shishio Makoto

Seta Soujiro

Himura Kenshin

Makimachi Misao

In the end, the two winners based on the scores from the panel of judges were...

First runner-up: Ken Lim as Sagara Sanosuke

He wowed the crowd with some cool moves, jumped off the stage and then tried to exit the wrong way. Even when he didn't mean it, he was in character, hahah!

And the champion is...

:iconakagii2004: Arnel Serioso as battle-worn Shinsengumi captain Saito Hajime

As the judge who was in costume, they asked me to come up onstage and take pictures with the winner. It worked out really well since our cosplays are both from the Bakumatsu :D

A rare smile from Saito

Gatotsu vs. Battojutsu

A battle I would really like to see is between Saito and Battousai in the Bakumatsu, so I was happy we got to take some pictures together albeit quickly.

A momentary truce

I knew you secretly like me, Saito-san

After the cosplay competition, I had a bit of time to meet people and take pictures and stuff. This makes me look like an assassin who doesn't value discretion, hahah!

Me and Me, the ace of the Rurouni Kenshin quiz bee

The past and the present

Phone snapshot with Megumi-dono

I had a cheeseburger as a quick snack, which probably looked pretty funny.
The sauce I'm holding is our local McDonald's barbecue sauce. Next time you have a cheeseburger, get an additional order of BBQ sauce and dip your burger there. You'll thank me. Hahah!

Back to trying to stay in character

My scar looks painful

I was interviewed a couple of times

One of the reasons I enjoy cosplaying Kenshin is that he is height-appropriate for me. OTL

( Click here for more pictures from the Rurouni Kenshin event and movie premiere )

Thank you to UP AME for inviting me to be a guest and judge at the Swordplay event before the film, during which I was very happy to be around fellow RuroKen fans and celebrate our love for the series with RK music and games and cosplay! I had an amazing day!

Waiting for the movie to start! And getting trolled by Megumi, hahah

It was really funny and sweet how people treated me like I was actually starring in the movie, since I was dressed as Hitokiri Battousai. Before the film started, some people asked for pictures and introduced themselves and chatted with me for a while. And when the movie was done and we exited the theater, I was interviewed by a TV crew and asked, "So how did you find the movie that you starred in?" Hahah! Good times!

I'm also incredibly touched and honored by the countless messages I've been receiving from people who said that they kept remembering me while watching the film. Thank you!

My thoughts on the movie

Me and my beautiful premiere ticket <3

Here are my non-spoiler general impressions about it:

:bulletblue: Subbed or dubbed?
Let's start with one concern everyone has had: It was SUBBED, not dubbed! Whoo!

:bulletblue: Cinematography
The film was visually stunning. Practically every scene you could screencap and it would be a beautiful picture. I particularly loved the subtle ways they would light Kenshin's face. The locations were pretty much perfect. I got such strong feelings of nostalgia and belonging in the Kamiya Dojo.

:bulletblue: Fight scenes
I would like to shake the hands of the fight choreographers because the battles were AMAZING! The entire audience could not help collectively gasping and cheering at parts because they were so gripping, and at times had a dash of comic relief. I felt they had achieved the superhuman speed, strength and agility of these anime characters we have come to admire, yet kept a good level of realism to keep them from being entirely too cheesy. There is one nitpick I would like to make toward one scene for a certain character but I think I understand why they did it, and it is forgivable.

:bulletblue: Casting
I initially had my doubts about casting, but after seeing the film, I feel they did justice to their roles. ESPECIALLY TAKERU SATO. Kenshin is probably my favorite character of all time, and I wasn't sure if any living soul would be able to portray him in a film to my liking. I was happy to be proven wrong. Takeru was BRILLIANT. He depicted both sides of Kenshin so well — the endearing pacifistic wanderer, and the swordsman who used to be Hitokiri Battousai. Several times he made us go "AWWWWW" out loud in the middle of battle scenes, in which he performed so well! Fight choreo prowess aside, his facial expressions were also spot on. I could not be happier!

:bulletblue: Costumes
The costumes and styling were also impeccable. They stayed true to feel of the original character designs but added some changes to make them more realistic. I kept ogling at the added details on Saito's police uniform (look out for that beautiful holster). Even the way they did Takeru's hair, I found it perfect, especially if you notice how it looks from the back. The way it's pulled back but those layers that frame his face stick out at the sides. It's really reminiscent of the way Kenshin was drawn in the manga and anime.

:bulletblue: Plot
Understandably, they had to change parts of the plot to condense the story to fit into the time frame of a movie, but I thought they were able to do it in a way that doesn't take away from the original story. There are parts that could have been improved but hey, nothing is perfect! Overall, I felt it was an incredibly successful live action adaptation of a beloved series.

:bulletblue: SEQUEL?
My only complaint is — and this is actually not negative — it left me wanting more! Because of the time constraint, not all the characters were fully showcased, but perhaps they'll get their turn to shine on the... wait for it... SEQUEL! There are talks of a sequel for the movie! Read about it HERE. Also in the article is news about the U.S. release!

So yes, I LOVED the movie and you guys should go see it while you can! It was only supposed to show in the Philippines until December 9, but SM Cinema heard the battle cries of Rurouni Kenshin fans! Movie screening extended!!! It will continue showing from today until December 18 in some areas! It's also now showing in some branches that didn't have it before! Click here for screening details!</s>

Before I write about cosplay makeup, I figured I should discuss some skincare basics. I feel it's important to know how to take care of your skin before you start putting gunk on it! This is really very basic so I think those of you with your own regimens already might be bored by it! But here it goes!

I'm not an awesome guru wizard thing, but I'll just share some general concepts and products that work for me. It's different for everybody, but I hope this will be helpful! For your sreference, my skin type is combination: normal to dry with an oily nose. Hahah! Not my T-zone, just my nose!

Recently, my male friends had gotten very interested in makeup for cosplay and asked me for tips on how to go about it. (I think this was fueled by Kaname's visit to our country for Cosplay Mania '12, and they saw how beautiful he looks.) I decided to ask them about their skincare regimen to figure out what products might work for their skin type.

When I asked what they wash their face with, a lot of my friends (especially guy friends) gave some answers that made me give them a look of horror.

"Just water"

"Soap? The... same soap I shower with"

And I'm like

NO NO NO NO NO NO :ohnoes: Especially since these are guys who are often exposed to polluted air in the city, using public transportation, and doing intense physical training outdoors. And also who have a habit of touching their faces.

This brings us to the first item I cannot be without!

:bulletblue: Essential Product #1: Facial cleanser

Facial cleansers come in many forms, and are made to clean off impurities from your face without damaging the skin. Soaps that are meant for washing the body are usually too harsh for the more tender skin on your face. Body soaps could leave your face dry or even cause irritations. (Except for Dove, which does not contain lye. I hear it's actually nice for the face. But maybe still keep a separate bar for your face, because do you really want something that has cleaned the rest of your body to go on your face?)

The one in the photo is what I'm currently using — It's a green tea facial bar soap with a small percentage of glycolic acid. (The dried-up bubbles look cool! It's like frost, hahah!) I first started using this type of soap after my dermatologist recommended it for my skin type. This green tea variation was a gift from a friend, though. All I know is that she got it from Thailand.

Wash your face only twice a day: right after you wake up, and before you go to bed! More than that could strip your skin of its good natural oils too much, which will later make it produce too much oil to compensate! And when you dry your face, pat gently; don't pull at it and rub vigorously! That's bad for you!

Also, my facial bar is sitting on the greatest soap dish ever, from MUJI. That bubble-like bed is made of plastic and prevents the gross residue wetness puddles that usually happens with other soap dishes.

A bit of info about glycolic acid:
"Glycolic acid is used to improve the skin's appearance and texture. It may reduce wrinkles, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and improve many other skin conditions. Once applied, glycolic acid reacts with the upper layer of the epidermis, weakening the binding properties of the lipids that hold the dead skin cells together. This allows the stratum corneum to be exfoliated, exposing live skin cells." (Source)

I also have other cleansers with more specific functions. I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub which helps exfoliate. So when I have dry, flaky patches on my face, I use it to scrub them off gently. Also, when my pores feel clogged with excess oil or makeup, it seems to help push the gunk out and my pores are left feeling cleaner. Just be careful not to be too rough on your skin with this! And only use it 2-3 days a week.

Other brand recommendations for newbies: Cetaphil, Neutrogena

:bulletblue:  Essential Product #2: Moisturizer

The one in the photo is one of my favorites — a moisturizing toner/lotion from a Japanese brand, Hada Labo. We don't have this in Manila so this pack was brought back by my friend who visited Singapore. (Thank you!)

Common question from guy friends: "Why do I need to use moisturizer? Won't it make my face sticky?" or "My face is already oily, I don't need to put moisturizer" NO NO NO NO.

They made me very sad. Hahaha! I always enjoy using moisturizers because they make me feel refreshed. Again, I have several kinds because I enjoy switching them up depending on how my skin feels for the day and trying new products. Skincare is like a hobby for me. =p

I like getting refill packs of the Hada Labo lotion I mentioned earlier, and transferring them to small bottles like this:

That water-like substance in the bottle is the moisturizing lotion. It's unusual to call such a watery liquid a lotion, but it does do an excellent job of refreshing my skin and locking in the moisture so it feels soft and supple.

It's best to use moisturizer right after you wash with facial cleanser! That way, your face is nice and clean and ready to absorb the good moisture. If your skin is properly hydrated, it is less likely to produce unnecessary oil. (I think some people have the impression that moisturizer is sticky because they imagine putting in on their faces during midday when it tends to be oily. NO NO NO NO THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS)

So what is the importance of moisturizer?

Dry skin is more likely to wrinkle or sag. It's not very flattering for a person's face to appear cracked or flaky. It could even itch, and scratching could lead to breaking the skin which means openings for infection.

When your skin is too dry, your face tries to make up for the missing moisture by producing oil. (This is why some people's skin get oily!) Too much oil on your face is generally uncomfortable, and it can also lead to more acne. And acne is never fun, because it's itchy or painful, prone to infection, and takes a toll on a person's looks and consequently, their self-confidence.

Our bodies are 80% water and our largest organ is our skin. Doesn't it sound like it could help to reinforce the moisture on our face, which is usually most exposed to the sun?

Brand recommendations for newbies: Celeteque has nice, no-frills, affordable moisturizers. They're hypoallergenic, water-based, oil-free, and fragrance-free. You can get them at Watson's. They even have moisturizers with SPF, which brings us to the next essential product—

:bulletblue: Essential Product #3: Products for sun protection

My bros kept making me weep. I ask, "Do you have a daily sunblock?" And I get answers like, "I thought sunblock was just for the beach."

Our country is near the equator and it's always hot around here, so I'm never very comfortable going out without sun protection. I think we all know that it's bad to soak up too much of our dear sun's rays.

Sometimes I use a normal non-tinted moisturizer with SPF, but I've developed a habit of using BB creams for everyday sun protection. I enjoy the fact that BB creams are multi-purpose: Apart from the SPF, they also moisturize, certain types help with oil control, and they have just enough coverage to even out my skintone.

I have more than one BB cream because I use different kinds for different days. I pick according to consistency, level of coverage, and SPF level to suit the day's activities. Or just use whatever isn't buried in my room which I need to clean up

:bulletblue: Essential Product #4: Lip balm

I alwaysssssss have lip balm. (This isn't my whole collection. OTL) Maybe I have fussy lips but I'm not comfortable without a stick of lip balm on me. My lips don't really get dry or chapped otherwise but I suppose it's a quirk of mine to want to pamper them, hahah.

My favorite one is the Palmer's Cocoa Butter lip balm because the consistency is unlike any other that I've encountered, and it has SPF 15. Most balms feel waxy and just feel like they're sitting on my lips and not doing anything so I just want to wipe them off after a while. The Palmer's one melts in an almost buttery way, and leaves my lips feeling moisturized and happy without the feeling that it's coated in something thick. And it smells like marshmallows!

Lip balm isn't just for girls!!

This is usually met with a resounding, "WHAAAAAT??"

"At this point, you might be asking yourself whether you really need a lip moisturizer at all. The answer to that question has to do with the unique nature of lips. For one thing, the skin on your lips is very thin. The blood supply is very close to the surface, which is why lips appear pink or red. In addition, your lips don't contain any oil glands, so they don't produce any natural oils like the rest of your skin does. As a result, lips tend to become dehydrated and chapped more quickly than the rest of your skin would.

To make matters worse, you might think you're adding moisture when you lick your dry lips, but the relief is only temporary. Once the saliva dries, it takes with it any natural moisture on your lips, leaving them even drier than before -- so the more you lick your lips, the drier they become. An effective lip moisturizer needs to do what sebum, your skin's natural oil, does for the rest of your skin: Keep moisture in and protect lips from any drying environmental conditions." (Source)

:bulletblue: Essential Product #5: Makeup remover

How many of you have friends who just use soap and water (or worse, just water) to take makeup off after cons?

If you plan to use makeup, it's important to invest in makeup removers as well! Makeup can clog your pores and cause acne, and really, who wants that? Makeup is made to adhere to skin, so they won't easily wash off with soap and water. And you really shouldn't scrub too hard to clean up your face because that much pressure and pulling on your skin will cause wrinkles and make it more prone to sagging. Makeup removers exist to loosen up the makeup and help you get the job done with as little stress to your skin as possible.

Yet again, this type of product comes in many forms and you can try them out to see what works best for you. The two in the above photo are items I normally use after cosplay makeup.

The one in the jar is Happy Teatime Aloe Tea Cleansing Cream from Etude House. It's a cream-type makeup remover that does a good job of melting off foundation-type products like BB cream. I suppose it's kind of like cold cream, but less oily than other cold creams I've encountered. You can actually wash it off with water, and it doesn't leave the face feeling oily and gross. Other cold creams which would resist water because of the oil content. (I still like to use tissue to wipe it off then use a facial cleanser after this, just to be thorough.) It's also got a very nice scent and leaves my skin feeling nourished. The price is very reasonable, at Php120+ for this jar that lasts for quite a while. So don't skimp on it! Your skin will thank you. It will grow mouths and speak to you

Look at this lovely sparkly pink bottle of unicorn tears.

This two-part concoction in the bottle is just called Mascara Remover, and is also from Etude House. Funny thing is, I don't even use mascara. I use it to clean off eye makeup. Eyeliner can be particularly tricky to take off, but this makes it a lot easier. Its removal power is stronger than the cleansing cream.

You use it by shaking the bottle up to combine the pink oil and clear water-like liquid, then using it to dampen a cotton pad which you clean up your eyes with. Again, avoid excessively pulling on the skin! The eye area is particularly sensitive and has a greater tendency to sag. Also, try not to let it seep into your eyes because while it doesn't hurt, your vision can get weird and cloudy for a bit because of the oil. That can't be good for you.

Another makeup removal product that is handy to keep in stock is this pack of cleansing facial wipes. Again from the Happy Teatime line of Etude House. They're not like regular wet wipes, some of which are soaked in cleansers with alcohol and other strong chemicals in them because they're meant to clean your hands, not your face. These tissues are soaked in makeup remover, which leaves the skin feeling fresh and moisturized. They also smell really nice! My friends and I often use these to let our skin breathe the moment we leave a con.

Strongly avoid going to bed with makeup on because your sleeping time should also be time your skin can heal and repair itself. It can't do that very well when you've got all this junk all over your face. So if you're ever too tired to wash your face properly, at least try to use these wipes. However, I still insist on using my facial cleanser after using this!

One time, a friend (whose name I will not mention because he has learned since then and will now be ashamed of what he did) tried some theatrical makeup on his face and since that stuff was made to stick to skin well, normal soap couldn't wash it all off. What he did was scrub his face with a pumice stone.

scrub his face with a pumice stone

[sound echoes through the ages]

I told him never to subject his face to that kind of torture again and if a makeup removal emergency ever presents itself again, that he can use baby oil or extra virgin olive oil instead. Lesson learned.

Quick rundown:
:bulletblue: Use a facial cleanser to wash your face everyday, twice a day. Once when you wake up, and another time before you go to bed.
:bulletblue: Use a moisturizer after washing your face. Get some on your neck as well.
:bulletblue: Make sure to apply products with sun protection before going out. Again, spread a bit down your neck.
:bulletblue: Keep a lip balm handy. Lip balms that contain SPF are especially great!
:bulletblue: Use proper makeup removers to gently but thoroughly clean your face on days you wear makeup.

Order of products when washing your face:
1. makeup remover / cleansing cream
2. facial wash
3. moisturizer

It's really not very complicated when you get used to it! Don't be too lazy to care for the part of your body that you regularly present to people, and that you greatly rely on to convey emotion! It'll only take up a few minutes of your day, and it'll be worth it.

And also...
:iconimbishieplz: LISTEN UP, MEN! There is no shame in wanting to take care of what you have! If other guys will poke fun at you for wanting to keep your skin healthy, let them laugh! One day you'll laugh at their saggy skin and bad complexions! Go shop for your skincare products with your heads held high! Hahahahahah

I guess that's it for now! Oh, and of course also drink lots of water, get sufficient hours of sleep, and eat stuff that's good for you! If you're having some major problems, you could try consulting with a proper dermatologist.

I often get questions about my skin (it's far from perfect, but I appreciate your interest) so I hope this provides sufficient answers! I'll post the long overdue updated version of our cosplay makeup tutorial sometime after this! :)

Outtakes below!

Halloween shoot outtakes and crack photos
During this year's Halloween, my friends and I got together to do a cosplay shoot for a series that we're really into right now — Kuroko no Basket. It's quite a popular series now, and as fans ourselves, we can see why. So we're not surprised so many others are crazy about it too. More on this perhaps when we have proper photos to show.

Something I look forward to in the manga are the omake at the end of the chapters. So right now, I'll be sharing our outtakes from the shoot. The whole lot of us are just goofballs

Okay, a relatively decent group shot first! Showing actual height differences! (Although the people at the back are much taller than they seem here hahah)

Rewind to the earlier parts of the day!

Not all of our uniforms are ready, so Aki Hana181 and I just got a few shots with what we had to test them out.

I actually did need to style Aki's wig, so this happened. (Thank you Cass cazzu-chan for taking these photos!)

Kuroko and Akashi had very similar hairstyles in middle school, right? This is my theory as to how that came to be :XD:

And then when we went to scout the basketball court area, I got this stupid idea for a comic thing inspired by a meme. I got a bad bruise from boxing training, so I figured we might as well make use of it for something funny

Inspired by this meme :pointr:…

It was a fun challenge trying to copy Akashi's homicidal glare

:note: And since people often ask, my lenses (as well as all my other Generation of Miracles friends' lenses) are from Alice and Rabbit's Shop. I'm using the Red Prescription Lens (phased out) and Crystal Max Lenses in Brown (it's actually golden brown).

Here's the development of that bruise in the photos above. Bruise Lee. :| This is what Dom named the bruise he (accidentally?) gave me during training, as I mentioned. We weren't even sparring or anything yet. I bruise like a fruit. Don't worry though, it looks worse than it feels!

When the rest of our friends arrived, we changed into our casual outfits and helped each other prep up. And then, on to the night shoot!

Halloween-themed portrait that I took of Aruki dancingontightrope as Aomine who has mistaken a jack-o-lantern for a basketball. Hahah! The red eyes were not edited; that's reflected light from the jack-o-lantern. As for the light source for the lantern — it came from Midorima who is crouching somewhere below, pointing a flashlight at it to make it glow

A snapshot I took when Marko Happy-Hario was shooting. This is what happens behind the scenes when we don't bring stands and stuff, hahah! Human assistants to the rescue! The flash and diffuser had to be held up quite high, so Mark / Murasakibara (who actually does tower over all of us) handled those. Dom is sitting by the side, using a stick to help balance the basketball in Aruki's grip. :XD:

Marko's masterpiece — the most in-character portrait of Tetsuya Kuroko

The reject shots from poses which involve us throwing balls can be pretty hilarious
We took turns captioning this in between fits of laughter
Dom said, "This is the last thing you will see before an Ignite Pass hits you"
Marko said, "Kuroko wa Basket....ball"
and also, "Kuroko loves basketball so much he dressed up as one for Halloween"

The Ignite Pass and the Astonished Spectator

After we pulled off the Halloween junk, we just wanted some random snapshots for Facebook and whatever, so we huddled together for Marko. We didn't realize Tsunderima wanted to join too.

Towards the end of the night, we were ravenously hungry so we headed over to Chuck's Deli for dinner.

When I'm around my friends, they inspire me to make them cringe with corny puns. We were all just waiting for our food when I had the urge to parody some of Akashi's famous lines, which you'll see in the photo sequence below. Charmie managed to document it, hahahah.

(People who read the manga will get the reference)
HAHAHAH I do kind of want to hit myself
If we ever do a Seirin group, I call dibs on Izuki because he is my pun bro

Aki was facepalming beside me as that was happening and when I was done, shook me and went, "CAPTAINNNN WHY ARE YOU SO CORNYYYYYY"

Aruki snapped this photo of me and Aki
Kuroko and Akashi twin haircuts!
We were using a purikura app on Charmie's phone, working very hard on our masterpiece, which is...

Hipster Kuroko!
The Emperor's new clothes!
Kawaii poop head Kise!
Momoi and Aomine both with items stolen from Barbie's wardrobe
I don't even know what we did to Midorima hahahah

And I leave you to process that image.
Until next time!

Adventure Time cosplay at Fantasy Quest 2
A couple of weeks ago, we attended an event called Fantasy Quest 2. (The very first Fantasy Quest was when we cosplayed Harry Potter characters.)

It was a pretty special day for us because four years ago, we had our first shoot and bonding day with Ysabel SavingSunlight at the venue, Fernwood Gardens.

We've been really into Adventure Time, so many months ago we decided we'd do AT cosplay, and that Fantasy Quest would be a fun opportunity to do so. :D It feels weird how we had been looking forward to this event for ages, and now it's over!

:iconballistashark: Melo — Jake
Alex — Prince Gumball
:iconsavingsunlight: Ysabel — Marceline
:iconbehindinfinity: Jin — Marshall Lee
:iconweakman: Dom — Hunson Abadeer (a.k.a. Marceline's Dad)
:iconyaoiangel14: Charmie — Ice Queen
Marien — Flame Princess

Special thanks to Alice and Rabbit's Shop for supplying literally all of our cosplay contact lenses. :XD:

And also to Hatah Hatah for the Jake hat!

It was great how everyone had no trouble picking characters they wanted when we first talked about this. :D I chose Marshall Lee because I'm one of the many who want to see more of him after his brief appearance in the Fionna and Cake episode. I hope they fulfill their promise of another genderswap episode, and this time focusing on Marshall Lee! Marceline is my favorite in the original cast, so I'm positive I'll like Marshall too! I also like his clothes and hair. I plan to make an axe bass for next time!

Kat moonlightflight was supposed to cosplay Princess Bubblegum, along with Timecake who was going to be Fionna but they both got sick that weekend. :ohnoes: They're okay now, though! :D

We attended the event with our friends who were in Disney and Legend of Korra cosplay! More on that later!

Time to rewind for a bit!

A few days before the event, we got together to try out the makeup we bought for those of us who are not supposed to be, well, human-colored. After a bit of experimenting, we had some Adventure Time food!

Excuse the quality pictures from this part, these were just from my phone, hahah. Getting nearby objects to focus on a BlackBerry is balls.

:music: Bacon pancakes, makin' bacon pancakes! :pointr:…

I take some bacon and I'll put it in a pancake! :music:

Cheesedog sandwiches with grape jelly
So we did
(I actually enjoyed these)

Also, mustache bread

And at the Mandaloria base, we screamed while watching the braver ones play Ib. AUGH I KEPT JUMPING

Next game was Slender
It has been a while since I screamed the way I did over this game

And here are some shots from when I was working parts of my friends' costumes. Many thanks to :iconhappy-hario: Marko and :iconweakman: Dom for helping me out!

Ice Queen's crown

Prince Gumball's crown
My nails were painted grey because I'd be painting my skin grey for Marshall Lee. My nails ought to match, right? :XD:

Flame things for Flame Princess' wig

And now, onward to the day of Fantasy Quest 2!

I don't know WHY but Melo BallistaShark decided to try on Charmie's Ice Queen gown. Resh Reskiy delightedly documents it.

Another round of Adventure Time-style food! We had the BEST TACO SALAD EVER for lunch and it was so good that we wanted it for dessert too. We replaced the nacho chips with Oreos. YUP STILL GOOD.

And after a long period of painting ourselves grey (Marceline, Marshall Lee, and Hunson Abadeer), pink (Prince Gumball), orange (Flame Princess), blue (Ice Queen), tan (Jack Sparrow) and white (Mulan) and everyone getting their gear on, we were off to Fantasy Quest!

If all our friends are included though, we'd be:

:iconmerkymerx: Miguel — Captain Jack Sparrow
:iconcazzu-chan: Cassie — Mulan
:iconflamable77: Sammy — Korra
:iconsomemaskedude: Bok — Mako
Angelo — Bolin
Alecs — Asami
Tien — Amon
Eiya — Chi Blocker
:iconangelace9: Jessica — Princess Bubblegum cosplaying Revolutionary Girl Utena

The venue was beautiful, so we were taking pictures everywhere while greeting friends and dancing all over the place. Lots of people took pictures of us too so here's a buttload of group pictures, hahah

IDEK what I'm doing to Jake. And Utena looks like she's wearing Prince Gumballs crown here. I KNEW THAT WAS YOU, PB.

I was wondering what Jake tastes like

Adventure Time vs. Legend of Korra
We were photobombing each other so much at times that I can't tell which group was originally being photographed

We met some sweet girls from Iloilo — Bea and Ashti. They gave us a box of sweets! Thank you! :D

Derping on a bench. Finn is looking kinda lost, and Ice Queen and I are checking on our non-human colored makeup. (It faded on my arms, given how rowdy the lot of us were that day. :XD:) Flame Princess seems to be hungry and may or may not be nibbling on mini macho Finn. Marceline is practicing her spooky face while Hunson Abadeer looks for some souls to suck.

Finally a proper shot.

I brought Alex some Bubble Tape because, well, Prince Gumball. We could use it to patch his highness up if he gets hurt. Hahah! Also, it says Hubba Bubba, and Bubba is PG's first name. =p

And then everyone started picking on Prince Gumball.

Mmmmm candy people

I threatened to bite into it instead of rolling it out like tape, hahah

"You're eating my heart!"

In the end, Alex had some too

Bubble Tape is still the softest and yummiest gum

So much pink!

Finn wanted in on the bubblegummy goodness

And then we actually did find an Ezio cosplayer!

My colorful friendsssss

We spotted another Marceline who was by herself so we were like, HEY MARCY COME UP HERE AND JOIN US.
In retrospect, I think our big, noisy, colorful group might have scared her.

We found another resident of The Land of Ooo! 13 year-old Princess Bubblegum! We saw her and started yelling again. "PEEBEE!" "TOO YOUNG!!" "ONE MILLION YEARS DUNGEON!!!" "UNACCEPTABLLLLLLLE!!!"

Kung Fu fighting with Chie!

At one point, someone approached us and requested for Prince Gumball x Marshall Lee, HAHAH

Alex was like, "Oh gosh I'm so sorry, Jin" and I'm like, "Nah, I'm used to it"

I have yet to see how those pictures came out, though. Hmmm.

:iconmicahmidnight:'s Madoka cosplay is too cute

How you doin'?

Jin's Flower Wreath Process
Sometime last May, Kat moonlightflight and I cosplayed our favorite Vocaloid song, "Just Be Friends".

Their outfits seem simple at a glance, but that actually makes things more complicated sometimes. Hahah. Despite Luka's dress looking like something you could probably find in a mall, Charmie yaoiangel14 made the dress from scratch exactly as it looked in the artwork, just for Kat moonlightflight. Kat and I also did our best  with the part of their outfits that had the most amount of detail (which also happens to be our favorite parts) — the flower wreaths.

I have some pictures of the progress of my wreath, so I thought I'd share them. This probably isn't the best method of going about this, but this is how I did mine and I found it pretty easy. (I wish I could have taken more photos or a video, but to be honest I wasn't quite sure I'd pull this off at first. Hahah!)

The first step for me was shopping for materials. I looked at the artwork closely to get an idea of what kind of flowers and leaves I should keep an eye out for. Here's a little breakdown:

1. The main pieces were the red roses. I noted that some had a magenta tinge, while others had a more orange tint. I was lucky enough to find a bundle with both, and in the right stage of blooming (open, but not fully bloomed).

2. As for the leaves, I noticed they were tear-shaped and were a mix of several green shades. Light green, forest green, and olive green mainly.

3. For some little extra touches, I noticed there were small bunches of peach-colored blossoms. I couldn't find some quite like the ones in the illustrations, but I did have these berry-like things that gave a similar visual effect from a distance.

4. Another little extra detail I mixed in were these tiny splashes of light yellow-green.

Here is half of my flower haul. They were from the home section of SM Department Store.

A better look at the flower bunch

And here are the leaves

I also used these green craft wires. They're just really thin wires with a green paper covering. I got this at the crafts section of my usual office supply store (National Bookstore).

The wires are really thin so I started out by braiding three pieces for a slightly more stable base. It didn't have to be neat, because I will be adding a lot more stuff on top of it, and it won't really show in the final wreath.

The wires weren't very long so I just kept adding to the ends by braiding and twisting more wire. Again, it didn't need to be neat. I did that until I got the estimated length I needed. I didn't close it up just yet because I wanted to fit it around my neck after putting the flowers on. (Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of this stage! I was in the zone hahaha)

I cut off the flowers from their bunches, leaving about this much allowance on the stem so I could twist it onto the wreath. I didn't have specific measurements. Whatever felt right, really.

Same with the leaves.
Aren't my scissors great? The advantage of having something SO BLOODY KAWAII YO is that nobody ever tries to steal it. It would be easy to spot and I'd be like HEY MAN, THOSE ARE MY SCISSORS, MAN.

Here's how I attached the flowers and leaves to the braided base. I basically just held the stem against the base ring, and twisted more wire around them to keep them together. I made sure to push the ends in to avoid them potentially poking my neck.

To ration my main roses and make sure I had enough, I started by distributing the biggest roses around the ring.

It's starting to come together!

After I had positioned the main roses, I added in the smaller bits to fill up the gaps.

Soon, I had this.

After the flowers and leaves had been put in place, I brought out the floral tape. You can get these at office/craft/art supply stores too. It feels like thin stretchy fabric and the adhesive is very mild but adequate. You just have to keep winding it around itself tightly and pinching around it to secure the hold.

I just wrapped them around parts where the base braid was showing, and around everything else I possibly could.

This helps keep everything together and make everything look generally neater. But I wasn't quite finished at this point and it doesn't look very neat at all in the picture.

After a couple of hours of patience and some WIZARD MAGIC
Finished flower wreath! Cue fanfare!

And here's how it looks when worn:

Our flower wreaths weren't completely 100% accurate because the scale of the available flowers was bigger than it looks in the artwork, but we worked with what we had and were happy with what we made. I actually like the larger scale because it makes the wreaths stand out more. It also felt very rewarding that people came up to us to ask about how we made them or just express their appreciation. :) I hope this was helpful!

I miss updating DA!
Yet again, sorry I seem to have disappeared from deviantART! I really like to take my time when I update this page, and lately I just haven't had much time to do that. There are so many things that need to be done, that sometimes it's almost maddening. I say almost because a lot of these things are far from unpleasant, but I so often end up wishing there were hours in a day so I could make time for everything!

Apart from the incoming updates from the things I'm currently working on (new costumes, shoots, paintings and Tuxessories!) I actually still have a backlog of updates piled up that I need to post. Despite being very late, I will exert more effort to get them out here so they don't end up forgotten. So for the nth time, I apologize that I haven't been able to reply to you guys. It's just that I feel like if I start responding to someone, I need to do it for everyone or I'll feel bad about it. But I do my best to read all your comments and stuff, and I sincerely do appreciate everything! :thanks:

On misunderstandings about cosplay

Tue Jun 5, 2012, 8:01 PM
This is a topic I've been meaning to talk about for quite a while now. I finally got the motivation to when Sarah sorairo-days emailed me to share my thoughts on what cosplay means to me, and what I feel it really means to be a cosplayer despite all the misconceptions about the hobby. It's for this article on Random Nerds, in which Sarah shares her side of it as well.

Over the years, I've witnessed how cosplayers are constantly looked down upon, which makes people apprehensive towards it. It's such a shame because it's a wonderful and rewarding hobby which brings people together. And in general, I am firmly against making anyone feel bad about doing something they want to do.

I am aware that the concept of cosplay might be too much for some individuals, but our intention definitely isn't to get all up in everyone's faces and say everyone should cosplay or whatever.  We just want to promote a better understanding of the hobby, for anyone who is willing to keep an open mind about it.

For anyone who has ever been looked down upon for cosplaying
Have you ever been ashamed to admit that you're a cosplayer? I feel rather fortunate that the people in my life are all supportive, but I've seen it happen. I think most cosplayers would be familiar with that subtle look of criticism from some people when they reveal that they cosplay, or when they try to explain the hobby to someone who isn't into it. It tends to remind people a little too much of kids playing dress-up, which isn't an activity most will find dignified or respectable. Admittedly, there is a lot about the hobby that is easy to misinterpret. I think there are things about it that people only really understand when they actually give it a chance and try it out. (However I also acknowledge that it might not be for everyone.)

Other hobbyists that have a special enthusiasm for fictional characters would express it by drawing fan art, writing fanfiction, or collecting merchandise. You can do these things discreetly, and even anonymously. In contrast, cosplay is an activity that would put a person in a position that's very susceptible to scrutiny.

Consider that most costumes would require showing your face and parts of your body.

Add that to the fact that cosplay is something that is usually done publicly. It takes a certain level of courage to step outside and go through with it. Some people will find that commendable, but others are quick to use it as an opportunity to ridicule.

Common misconceptions are that cosplayers are misfits of society who reject reality and think of themselves as cartoon characters because they don't accept who they really are. Or that cosplayers are all just attention-seekers who are trying to win a popularity contest against each other. There might be people who exemplify these stereotypes, but we have to remember that any large group of people is bound to include a few questionable individuals. But it doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is like that.

The simple truth is, cosplay is like any other thing people do in their free time — something they do because they enjoy it. Some people watch TV, go to clubs and drink, play video games, read books, play a musical instrument, make artwork: and the list goes on. Perhaps it's not something a large percentage of the word would deem "normal", but cosplayers are just people who have a special appreciation for costumes and enjoy making and wearing them.

I've always been interested in costuming in movies, especially when the Lord of the Rings trilogy came out. I felt like the garments and accessories were so beautiful and I wanted to be able to touch them and collect them and even wear them. It was amazing to see these characters and items from the book come to life in a tangible way, rather than just seeing them in my imagination. I felt like just because a little bit of that beloved fantasy world had come to exist in reality, it made me want to believe even more in adventure, magic, love, and fellowship. I wanted, even in some small way, to be able to do something like that. One day, I stumbled upon some photos of cosplayers with beautiful photography, which got me researching what cosplay was about. It sounded like what I wanted to do, so I gave it a shot, and I haven't stopped since.

For me, cosplay is most importantly an activity I can bond with my friends over. I've even met some of my closest friends because of cosplay.

PotC: Bring Me That Horizon by behindinfinity
We're all into a lot of different stuff, but cosplay is one of the things that brings all of us together. Our relevant hobbies and skills fall under it (such as craft-making, sewing, painting, photography) so it even allows us to learn things and be productive while having fun. We find it an endless source of amusement to make group cosplay plans, construct pieces together, go out and be goofs while using the products of our efforts, and create beautiful images through photography.

After a grueling week working hard for our classes or jobs and being productive members of society, it's just a nice break to be able to do silly things with friends.

For some people maybe that means getting drunk and doing drugs, but my friends and I happen to prefer putting together costumes and wearing, hahah! We wear them to private photo shoots or to conventions where they are appropriate, so it's not like we even disturb other people with our fun.

I feel I'm very lucky to have a large group of friends who shares this with me. Not everyone has that advantage.

That's the reason some people attend conventions. There is a certain sense of camaraderie in cons because even though you may not personally know everyone, just by being there it means you are somehow a fan of the geeky interest the con revolves around. And some of those strangers may just become some of the best friends you've ever known.

At times, being a fan makes you feel the most ridiculous emotions in the world — and I mean that in the best way possible.

Not everyone understands that, so it's an awesome feeling to be around others who actually do.

Cosplay is a great celebration of the way we can let these fictional stories and characters grab hold of our hearts and somehow change the way we feel about ourselves. It's crazy and silly and totally beautiful.

As long as your feet are planted firmly on reality and you've got your priorities straight, being able to find that much meaning, joy, and inspiration in fiction —stories that teach us about bravery and friendship and hope and laughter— is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about.

Crystal Max Lenses from Alice and Rabbit's Shop

Alice and Rabbit's Shop  has a new line called Crystal Max Lenses. I think this is my favorite, alongside the Cosplay Lens Series. I've got almost all the colors (because they are so good hahah) but for today I'll be featuring them in Brown, Green and Red.

Important thing to note for people like me: THEY'RE AVAILABLE IN PRESCRIPTION! I'm really happy these come graded, so apart from looking great they give me the gift of sight! (There are non-prescription ones as well for you lucky people with perfect vision, hahah)

I apologize for the watermarks! Some lens stores have stolen my photos in the past so I'm just trying not to let that happen so much. It's not fair for their buyers too if they're being deceived by my photos which don't show the other stores' products.

This is how the lenses look when not worn.

Crystal Max Lenses in Brown. They're really more of a golden hazel than a dark chocolate brown, and I like them this way.

They're an excellent color for characters with golden eyes like Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist), Alto Saotome (Macross Frontier), or Yoko Littner (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann). My friends and I used to struggle with lens color choices for these characters because their eyes weren't just brown, but they weren't yellow either. Now we've got these!

Here's a reeeeeally close look at the lens design. It lets some of the natural eye color show through. My natural eye color is that very dark brown, practically black color that shows through at the center. The lenses are larger than the size of my normal pupil so it creates a glowing halo effect (that lighter colored crescent) at the bottom.

Makes me wonder how these lenses would look on light-colored eyes. If you have light eyes and have similar lenses, I'd love to see!

This is how they look when I stood in front of a large window. They look much brighter with more light.

And here's the overall effect on a face. Well, my face. (My hair was not behaving so I stuck on my wolf hat. It helped a little, hahah.)

Next up is Crystal Max in Green. In contrast with the Green Cosplay Lens :pointr:… which was a leafy emerald green, this is more of a blue-green/teal/turquose shade. It kind of makes me think of Miku Hatsune, hahah.

In terms of how vivid it is, I think they show up even brighter than the hazel lenses I showed above.

I will stare into your soul
They also make a subtle halo effect on the bottom.

And now, Crystal Max in Red. These are AMAZING. These are the most photogenic red lenses I've worn. The glowing halo effect on these is the most striking!

Extreme closeup that shows the lens pattern, and how my natural eye color peeks through.

Characters that these lenses could work for: Sebastian Michaelis (Kuroshitsuji), Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Brera Sterne (Macross Frontier)

Here's how they look from a moderate distance. They're not garishly bright and fake-looking as some red lenses tend to be. You could get away with wearing these on an everyday basis, I think hahah. It's the sort of color that'll make people look twice and think you're a vampire.

Speaking of vampires…

Practicing! Ehehehehe

2. Melo BallistaShark shopping for furry ears
3. Batman taking pictures with the Batcam, and posing with pirates
4. Domo-kun!
5. Chinese Good Luck Cat pose
6. Nothing wrong with a little bromance cuddle
7. Ysabel SavingSunlight as Taiga in her angel costume, and Bok Somemaskedude as Ryuuji from Toradora
8. Too much adorables

1. Persona 4 teammates walking
2. Youthful Dinner!
3. A good bro helps a bro fix his hair
4. Kat moonlightflight being... Kat
5-6. Persona 4 trainnnnnnn
7. Myk DorkyDea (Yosuke) and Dom Weakman (Kanji) show off the Kanji fanart that Dom got from Doro
8. Brojima shows us how to fight, 300 style. He's using Mel's Tomoe Gozen helmet and banana naginata with Miguel merkymerx's Captain America shield (the process for which you can see here :pointr:…)

So yeah, go watch Resh's video! :D He's fantastic at what he does!

And here's a photo of our Persona 4 group (minus Margaret and Tomoe Gozen because they wouldn't be at Aiya) from last Sunday:

And from my Facebook page, here's a short video clip from dinner (with several hiimdaisy comic dub references)

We met a lot of awesome and very sweet people! Thank you guys for taking the time to come talk to us and supporting Tuxessories, the Japanese schoolbag charity and our friends at Alice and Rabbit's Shop! :)

Fantasy Quest 2011
Many, many months ago last July (that's how late this entry is) a cosplay event was held in the most beautiful location that the local cosplay community has ever seen. Fernbrook Gardens — the wedding & events destination which you might recognize from our Kuroshitsuji :pointr:… and Harry Potter cosplay photoshoots :pointr:…

It was around that time that the world was getting ready for the final Harry Potter movie, so my friends and I decided that perhaps it was about time to push through with our plans to cosplay Harry Potter characters. Parts of Fernbrook Gardens also looked like Hogwarts so we figured it would be appropriate. :)

Photos are from my friends, some from albums I was tagged in on Facebook, and some from my own camera.

Here I am with most of my friends that I went to the event with, along with Arnel akagii2004 whom we met that day as he was cosplaying Professor Snape. Lucky! We greatly enjoy meeting people who happen to be cosplaying the same series we are. :D

He caught our eyes because he was so incredibly in character the entire time — even when he was just looking around at what was happening around the event by himself. And when he walked around, the wind made his robes gently billow. We were admiring him like creepers before we finally approached him to join us if he wanted.

So that's Arnel :iconakagii2004: as Severus Snape
Kat :iconmoonlightflight: as Luna Lovegood
Timecake as Cho Chang
Alex :iconellensmere: as Hermione Granger
Jin :iconbehindinfinity: as Harry Potter
Miguel :iconmerkymerx: as Ron Weasley
Erving as Rubeus Hagrid
Hannah :iconhana181: as The Prisoner of Azkaban Gian Carlo (from Lucky Dog, not Harry Potter )
Sammy :iconflamable77: as Parvati Patil
at the back are the Friendly Neighborhood Photobombers

Angelo joined us too as Ventus (Kingdom Hearts)

I don't know where the others disappeared to in this picture

Asian Harry Potter, I don't even care hahaha

Kat moonlightflight as Luna.

Kat showing off her wizard bling. She made all her Luna accessories — from the dirigible plum earrings, the beetle ring, the Butterbeer cork necklace, and the Spectrespecs. :)

And so a photo series started. My friends, let me show you them.

Hey Cho, what do you call cheese that isn't yours?

Cho is a vampiiiire
Cedric what have you doooone

The Prisoner of Azkaban

Group shot with Charmie :iconyaoiangel14: as Euphie <3

Yay out of character shotssss

Erving made a big entrance as Hagrid. It's difficult not to notice that pink umbrella.

Hagrid's beard: doubles as wand storage

But he won't give up his camera even when he's cosplaying! Dedication!

And here is a lady who appears to be trying to climb up Hagrid

Kei and Satsuki spotted us just as we arrived at the venue!
They gave me framed artwork and home-baked sweets ;_;

Sammy flamable77 took this snapshot of me with her film camera. The soft quality of the photo is pretty awesome.
Whoa, my eyebrows

I saw so many pictures of myself in variations of this pose

With Ella as Chi, whom I first met at a photoshoot in this same place.
She was dressed as Edea then, and I was Sebastian.

With Ku Ri :iconkuricurry: whom I had also formally met at a photoshoot here.
She was Ciel in some of the Kuroshitsuji photos I posted :D
Kuroshitsuji: A Demon's Wish by behindinfinity

Kat was totally enjoying how she could get away with being derpy for pictures as Luna

Sammy was fangirling over Arnel's portrayal of Professor Snape and asked for a shot with him.
Being the good friends we are, we photobomed her.

Photobombing 101: Notice how the three of us are in The Uncroppable Zone.

"Why do we have to be in a picture with Snape?"

"That's Professor Snape to you"
We also met Kevin ( then. I was so happy to see another Harry cosplayer! It was cool to see how he had different touches on his costume, like the scarf. My Gryffindor friends were all wanting to steal it

We also met (another) Miguel then, who was with Kevin and dressed as Draco. We all laughed over his Potter Stinks! pin  I greatly enjoy seeing people add little touches like that. You can see Miguel in our big group photo:
Hogwarts Class Photo by behindinfinity

No Slytherins and two Harrys? Unhappy Snape is unhappy.

And then we flew awayyyyyyy. Or something. I don't know what we were doing here.

Somehow this photo reminds me of the Harry Potter game on the PlayStation 1. I miss playing old games!

Melo :iconballistashark: in his Jedi gear.

Random Jedi and Cousin Dudley photobombing me :XD:

Erving got this great photo of Kevin as Harry in the place where we took the Common Room portraits
Wingardium Leviosa by behindinfinity Ron Weasley by behindinfinity Hermione Granger by behindinfinity

Without his glasses and with his scar concealed, we thought Kevin would make a great grown-up (and badass) Neville too! We were thankful he obliged when we asked him to be Neville for some photos. :D

Our friend ships Neville and Luna, so we wanted to get some pair shots for her as part of a birthday present. I found a nice spot for them to post at and here's what happened:

Jin: Hey guys, could I get a candid shot? Pretend I'm not here.
Kevin and Kat: DURRRR

Jin: Come on guys, relax!
Kevin and Kat: HURRR

Jin: Okay, that didn't work. Pretend you're talking to each other?
Kevin and Kat: Wuuuuuut

Jin: FINE, JUST SIT AND SMILE. Close enough.

Our homemade wantds. :) Mine is the second from the left, and Miguel's is the third.

(Sorry about the blur, none of us have a clear shot of this because everyone was laughing too much)

After much mucking about around the venue, the three of us had to go onstage for a while for our Q&A panel.

Everyone was very sweet!

Hahah, our height differences. Character-accurate somewhat?

Hannah changed from Lucky Dog cosplay to Ao no Exorcist. She and Dom are rook arike.

Group shots from Kinoshi :D They did costume changes, whoa! Their group had some of our favorite costumes of the day!

Markee :iconshinobimarkee: as Giselle from Enchanted!

Okay, there we go

Even as nighttime fell, my friends were as diligent as photobombing as ever

And then there were fireworks! Here's a goofy video of me "casting spells".

Dom :iconweakman: handstanding with the doggy

We went around for a while, just taking pictures and admiring the place

Heading for the Forbidden Forest

And then I don't even know

I think we were trying to be assassins

Or maybe Death Eaters

And then when we were all exhausted beyond reason, we all went back to my place and ordered pizzas which took so long to arrive that we were all starving and delirious and contemplating eating the pizza delivery guy alive if he had arrived a minute later but after a false alarm he did get there it was like BEST AND FASTEST DISAPPEARING PIZZAS EVER. The end!

Design entry in the running! Please vote if you like it :)

I was working on this graphic, then saw the creative invite at Talenthouse to submit designs for SIGG water bottles. I thought this might look nice for that, so I simplified the design according to their specifications.

Here's my entry, which I gave the title Moonshadow. I illustrated images recalled by the fond memory of walking along the ocean shore at night. Inspiration was taken from woodblock prints.

It would be a big help if you could go to my contest entry page and vote for my design if you liked it. :) You don't need to sign up at the site. You can simply vote with your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts. :D

Thank you for your time!

dA PRO Camera Bag
This is a rather late review, but better late than never! This has been my camera bag for a while — the dA PRO Camera Bag.

I find it just the right size to carry my essentials, without being too bulky. A lot of my camera-wielding friends with too-large backpacks have repeatedly expressed their envy. Those straps on the front are for carrying tripods. They're removable if you don't need them.

Rubber dA logo on the back.

And here's how it looks when opened. What I've got in there currently is my camera, extra lens, LED camera light panel, charger, USB cord, extra battery, extra memory card, and some lens filters. There are so many compartments!

On the lid is a mesh pocket where you can put light, flat objects that don't weigh much. this is where I keep the other memory card and filters.

The main body has movable compartments so you can arrange them according to what you need.

They're made with very lightweight materials and they stick together with velcro.

See, you can pull them out and organize them the way you want.

There's a sort of spot-UV effect of the dA logo on the fabric. Very subtle but interesting touch. It's a nice bright red so that it's easier to find your camera stuff in the bag rather than have your things hiding in the shadows.

Here's how it looks from the back. The strap is a good width that doesn't dig into your shoulder even if your bag has a lot of stuff. It's also padded so it's (for lack of a better term) squishy and comfortable. The back of the bag is padded as well for comfort.

I believe those things on the side are for fitting another strap if you intend to wear this as a traditional shoulder sling bag. Also, more pockets!

You could put a drink in there if you like.

On the other side is a zipped-up pocket.

Here are the compartments inside it, which are great for extra batteries and memory cards.

The top of the bag opens up for very easy camera access.

This is my trusty old Canon EOS 400D. There's lots of space for bigger cameras.

And there's a handy little pocket on the strap as well.

Great size for cellphones or music players.

Check out the dA PRO Camera Bag store page for even more specs and features! :D

Japanese Schoolbag-Inspired Backpacks for Charity
Get a Japanese schoolbag-inspired backpack, help a community in need.

The Tuxedo Team, in partnership with Pamana Pag-Asa of Malabon, is proud to present the latest product from the Inno-Bayong line of Pamana Pag-Asa: the Randoseru Bayong Bag.

Designed by George Carlos Pastor from the Entrepreneurs School of Asia, the product draws inspiration from a Japanese cultural icon, the randoseru, a leather backpack given to schoolchildren during the start of their elementary years. Built to last throughout their formative years, an original randoseru made from genuine leather carries a price tag that can reach up to $350.

With the efforts of Tuxedo Team, Pamana Pag-Asa and Mr. Pastor, the Randoseru is now available in limited stock of 50 bags, at a fraction of that cost for only Php 695.00.

Furthermore, for every purchase of the Randoseru Bayong Bag will help support the impoverished community of Boni, Malabon.

These two lovely young men have graciously volunteered to show these bags in action for you. :XD:

Go, girls! Don't be late for school!

Look at this beautiful kawaii womans

Here's how it looks from the back.

The flap is secured by these straps.

Straps are made of soft leatherette and the length is adjustable.

img src="…">
The inside is lined with fabric, and there's a little pocket on one side. Apart from storing school stuff, the bag is big enough to keep a change of clothes. My friends and I use it as a gym bag or a convention bag. :)

I think they'd make an excellent con bag for cosplayers :D It's big enough to fit a change of clothes, with some room to spare. And if you need to set it down, dirt won't cling onto it like canvas bags. It's quite convenient.

The design would even be appropriate for school uniform-type outfits. If people ask for a photo, you won't need to take your bag off because this won't ruin the look of your costume. :)

The bag may look small but here's an example of what it can hold: A DSLR, a pair of jeans, and a shirt. There's still room for more stuff!

Here are my friends Kat :iconmoonlightflight:, Melo :iconballistashark: and Bok with their bags at PCC 2012.

They had :iconsquallrinoa: try the bag out while she was cosplaying Sawako. Cute!

And here they are with Dom :iconweakman: with an actual randoseru just for comparison.

Here they are again, kidnapping a stuffed capybara.

Oh, and one of my favorite things about this bag — There's a portion on the side where you can hang phone charms. :D

I'll just leave this here.

For those of you who would like to do good using your extra dA points
Two thoughtful dA users are giving us the opportunity to use our dA points to help people in need. People can be hesitant to donate cash since they can't be absolutely sure where that money will go. By donating dA points, it's limited to purchasing things from dA, and that's all these two projects really need.

:bulletblue: WARM WINTER PROJECT :bulletblue:
:icontoxicalice92: ToxicAlice92 has the Warm Winter Project. She will use the donated points to purchase deviantWEAR hoodies to donate to homeless shelters.

She wrote:
"I know there are people who say that the homeless need to just get their asses off the street and get a job. My father is one of those people, and always have been. But there are children left alone all the time; People who have been kicked out; Those who have lost their jobs and, in this economy, take q longer time to find another. It's not exactly easy to get a job if you have nowhere to live, no way to bathe, and no form of being contacted. At the very least, we can try to make it a little easier."

Read the rest of her post (which also has more details about the project) over here:
UPDATES CONT. - Warm Winter Project: 2012UPDATE 9 - As of Sunday, November 25, 2012, I WAS ABLE TO MEET AND PURCHASE MY DONATION GOAL OF 50 HOODIES thanks to deviantART's 30% off Black Friday sale as well as my 10% Premium Member Discount. Congratulations to us and thank you to everyone who helped out!
UPDATE 8 - As of Saturday, November 17, 2012, we are at 125,125 points, with only 34,875 points left to go! I was able to purchase 2,000 points a moment ago to put directly into the pool myself. My original intent was to get 8,000, but I ended up working less than I expected this week and was unable to, but as of my next paycheck (in two weeks), I will be able to purchase 8,000! That will leave us with 26,875. And after TimberClipse's AWESOME point doubler, like the one that helped out and did so amazingly earlier in the year, that will be another 8,000, leaving us with only 18,875! And his doubler is already halfway full with much thanks to rainylake for immediately putting 2,000 points in

To contribute, simply go to her page :pointr: :icontoxicalice92: and use the donation pool on the upper right side of the page.

According to dA admin Heidi, the deviantART team is backing her up as well. :D If ToxicAlice92 reaches her goal of getting enough points to buy 50 hoodies, deviantART will give her 50 more hoodies to donate!

:bulletblue: PROJECT PLUSHIE :bulletblue:
:iconcatluvr2: catluvr2 is heading a similar donation project — to buy 20 dA plushies (10 Fella, 10 Super Llama) to give to Toys for Tots, so that at least 20 kids can wake up on Christmas morning with a toy to cuddle.

Read his post here:
New ProjectAfter the success of , I was inspired to do my own project along the same lines. I call it "Project Plushie". I intend to give 20 plushies to Toys for Tots this Christmas, and that would include 10 Fella plushies and 10 Super Llama plushies.
This is where you come in. I can't do it alone; I need help. I need points to buy them; specifically, 27,988 points. I recently gave my last 202 points to ToxicAlice92 for her project. Go to my page and donate points so that 20 children won't wake up on Christmas morning without a toy to cuddle. I'll buy more if I get over my goal.
Thank you for helping me help others less fortunate. :)

Again, to contribute, head over to his page at :pointr: :iconcatluvr2: and give point through the donation pool on the upper right side of the page.

It's really inspiring seeing people stepping up like this. I hope we can all pitch in to help!

Hey, guys! Sorry I still haven't been able to update about Tux Team's recent cosplay adventures! As some of you might know, I really like to take my time to write those out. February turned out to be way busier than I expected! But hey, at least my gallery is getting updated a lot more this year! :D

Nowadays I like to make little blog posts and share snapshots on my Tumblr :pointr: If you like, you could follow me there too. :)

I've still got a lot of messages and emails to answer. (Especially yours, Rez!) Sorry to keep you all waiting! I really just find it difficult to write letters when I can't give my full attention. Loooots to do nowadays. I'm very thankful, but I do wish I also had more time to write journal entries.

I've got a little something to share right now, though!

MicCostumes Review: Alto Saotome Mihoshi Academy uniform
You know, I had never before tried just buying a costume and wearing it the way it was bought. I'm rather picky with fabrics so I prefer to shop for them by myself, and I feel my body proportion is a little strange so I might not fit well into average sizes.

I was contacted by :iconmiccostumes: one day and they asked if I'd like to to do a review of one of their costumes. I thought it could be an interesting experience so I agreed. :D

They let me pick out which costume I'd like to review, and after browsing around their site for a while, I decided on Alto Saotome's Mihoshi Academy school uniform (from Macross Frontier). I had been planning to cosplay Alto for a long time, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to finally get to do it! The design and fit of the uniform is also pretty simple, so I figured sizing wouldn't be an issue with this.

I'm very much like my Mihoshi Academy uniform. :D The set consists of the shirt, necktie and pants. (Wig and other accessories not included.) I feel their color choices for the fabrics were excellent. They're very close to what I would have picked, had I decided to get this costume done from scratch.

(The colors on the above photo came out a bit more vivid than they actually are, but the following photos will show the color of the costume better.)

Mihoshi Academy patch is neat and clean.

Shoulder detail, and nice crisp collar.

Here's that little tab detail along the font of the shirt. The button is made of gold-toned metal. I like that they opted for this instead of something plastic.

The necktie. It's a little bit too long on me but that's easy to fix. At least that means that taller people won't have to worry about it being too short. I actually quite like that they used gold leatherette for the cross detailing rather than yellow cloth. I think I would have done the same.

Alto reference again

Here's how the front hem of the shirt looks. I really like how it falls just the way it's supposed to based on the way Alto is drawn. It parts a little bit at the part where the buttons end, and and the hem curves correctly (instead of the usual straight hems like this :pointr:…).

Another portrait.

I don't have a full-body photo yet (I want to do that at a better location) but the pants fit me very well and fall the way they look on the reference image. :)

Here's the image of this costume from the MicCostumes online store.
Store listing for Mihoshi Academy uniform :pointr:…

I think the pricing ($53.78) is pretty reasonable. I feel I might have spent about that much if I had the same costume done from scratch.

What you see on the MicCostumes website is pretty much what you get. :) Well, with my costume I thought the actual product looked better than the way it did on the website. The quality of their wide range of costumes varies (hit or miss, really) but based on this experience I think that you just need a discerning eye and really really look at the fabrics used, proportions, detailing, etc., to figure out which costumes might be to your liking. I'm very happy with mine. :D

Of course the feeling is still more rewarding when you are more involved with the creation of your costume, and I'm not giving that up. :) But having the option to buy simpler costumes like this is pretty cool too. Like for this instance — I can now do a long wished-for Macross Frontier tandem cosplay with my friend Charmie who cosplays Sheryl Nome (we don't have a Ranka so I'm all hers hahah), but I managed to save time and resources which allows me to focus better on my more complicated cosplay plans. I would also great for casual parties or Halloween. I think it'd help too if you have people bugging to borrow costumes from you. You can direct them to the website instead so they can get their own

Special thanks:
:iconaliceandrabbit: Alice & Rabbit's Shop for my contact lenses
(I used the A&R Cosplay Lenses in Golden Hazel)
:iconmoonlightflight: Kat for taking my photos
:iconlazyeight: Ian for lending me the Alto wig
You guys are so good to me!

Hoping to do a nicer Macross Frontier shoot sometime! :D

Thanks for reading! Here's to hoping that my next update will be in the near future!
