Interview with Xavier Rey

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 7, 2009, 12:25 PM
Interview 03: Xavier Rey

Xavier Rey needs little introduction... He is a French photographer, known mainly for his long exposure B/W pictures. His
work is truly impressive. So I decided to ask him some questions...

Thank you for agreeing to this interview....

Hello. Tell us a little bit about Xavier Rey? How did you get into photography?

My name is Xavier Rey, I'm French and I live in south west of France, in Bordeaux last 5 years. My interest in photography was
born in 2005, following the meeting of the collective of photographers SPBordeaux. Fascinated by the waterscapes, I directed
my photographic work naturally to the long exposure to capture the moods of the atlantic coast. Besides, I like to do
photography in urban areas, report with a human approach, and portraits when the opportunity arises.

How do you describe your photographic style? And why did you chose black and white photography?

I am a landscape photographer, I like to be facing the ocean or in the middle of a mountain and I take full this time.
When I started, I was only in the color photograph, and then fairly quickly, I found in b&w photography a mode of expression
much more personal. I still make a few color photos, but I think nevertheless that the color does not have the same force as
the b&w, at least as far as my photographs.

Much of your work focuses on beautiful landscape and waterscape. Where is your favorite location to take pictures? Is there any place of your dreams /which you want to visit one day and take some photos there/?

I love to go to pictures on the Basque coast, the Bassin d'Arcachon, but I would say that the Atlantic coast is
photographically very rich and there are many places to discover.

I have no place in which I dream, but a desire to travel and discover other countries, other cultures, other landscapes.
My destination would be the time of Scotland ...

You are mainly landscape photographer. What do you think about other kinds of photography /like for example press photo, modeling photography.../?

I am admiring of photography in general, whether landscape, fashion, portraiture, advertising photography, reportage ...
A good photography remains a good photography !

Are there some good photo schools in France? Did you ever thought about making some workshop for young photographers? To show them how to make such a beautiful pictures, learn them how to make long exposure photos correct...

I am a self-taught photographer, I have no school of photography. I think the best school is the self-study, it appears that stronger!

I did not think to run courses on photography because I think there are a lot of people who do it better than me, and I did not really want to transform me into a teacher. Occasionally when I made the request, I try to just give advice ...

You are member of The 8Reg'ART group. Please tell us something about it /about other members, its purpose etc./. Is there any chance to another artists to become a member, or is it some kind of "closed community"? How are relationships between
French photographers, do you feel any support from others?

We created the collective 8Reg'ART (www.8regart.com) to promote Fine Art photography in France. Indeed, this one is little
known in France as opposed to other countries ...

We are 8 photographers, 8 friends driven by the same passion, the same desire photography.
We do not want at this time open the group to other photographers, because there are many more operations are more complicated, we have several projects underway, but who knows later, may be that the collective change in the opportunity to other photographers to join us...

What type of cameras do you shoot with? What is your opinion on post-processing?

I work only in digital. I has a Canon 5D digital SLR and some of the same optical mark. The post process is for me the obvious,
it is part of photography and is the equivalent of work done by photographers on their silver photographic prints.

I think that ART had changed during past years..because of internet. Now many talented, beginning artists can promote their work /it is hard to make an exhibition in gallery for unknown person/.. What's your opinion about it?

Times change, internet is an important medium that allows everyone to show their work, share and this is a good thing. But
the Internet does not replace the real event, the one with the author, with his prints during exhibition, fortunately.

Your photo was used by French punk/rock band 95-C for a cover. Was it just a single contract, or do you try to sell your photos also for "commercial" purposes? Is there any strict line between ART and COMMERCE at all?

This group was looking for a photograph to illustrate his new album. When I made the request for one of my photography, I
found the project interesting and so I acccept to do so with pleasure. But I would not say there was a commercial on my part
for this project, more than pleasure ...

Besides, I don't denigrates commercial photography, but I think the approach is different when one moves to a commercial project in relation to an artistic approach.

Speaking about music, what are your favourite bands, musical styles?

I like many musical styles, my favorite bands are among other Beastie Boys, Asian dub Foundation, Muse, System of a down...

What do you do in personal life?

I have the status of a professional photographer this year but I continue, in parallel my prosthesis work.

What are your plans or visions for your future?

My project in the future would be to live my passion for photography while remaining free to do what I want. But in the
meantime I continue my path, and I set a rule to always live photography as a passion, as a moment of pleasure.

Interview with Ebru SIDAR

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 2, 2009, 9:45 AM
Interview 02:Ebru SİDAR

...let's start new year with interview with Ebru Sidar, one of most talented photographer i saw here. Hope it will interest you as much as her beautiful photos....

Thank you for agreeing to this interview....

Hello. Please introduce yourself. How did you get into photography?

I was born in 13th january 1975. I come from Trabzon city of Turkey. I have a personality who loves life much, cheerful, curious and fanciful. I’m an ambitious person and to reach my dreams I do whatever comes from my hand. In the year 2005, one of my friend sent me a link of a photographysite in case i look at the photos, while i was watching the photos i got excited and i, immediately, became a member of the site and load a photo of my friend which i have taken by a webcam. After i had the criticals, i wanted to be better and i worked harder. My that effort is stil going on.

Do you try to create, display or express something special with your photos? Where is your favorite location to take pictures?

I don’t want people to look at my photos just thinking that they are beautiful. I’m not just taking the photos of an empty beauty. My aim is to touch the souls not only the eyes. If they’re looked more carefully, it will be understood that, every photo of me has a different story. At least for me. I believe that they are the language of nature. I’m just trying to understand and learn this language. In fact, there’s a talking silence in my photographs.

I can’t say that there’s a certain place i like to take photographs but, i can’t leave the places where i feel something strong and that provokes me and makes me more careful. It’s sometimes a cosmopolitan place sometimes a pure one..it’s just about my communication with that place.

Much of your work focuses on landscape and waterscape. Do you think it is important to specialize in one area of photography?

In fact, i began photography with portraits. Then i took photos of models and nature and approximately for two years, i’m taking nature photographs. I think it’s very impotant to specialize in one field in photography if you want to gain money from it.. But if you take photos just for yourself, i think that a photographer may take the photos of anything s/he wants. A photographer must be fearless and take photos of what s/he wants not the others’. That person must chase what makes him/her excited. Therefore, i can’t say that a photographer must specialize in one area, i’m one of the ones who think that a good eye can show his/her talent in every area.

Did you have a mentor or someone who helped you as you were getting started? Have you been inspired by any particular artists/photographers?

When i began the photography in past, there was nobody interested in photo around me. By the time passed, i accelarate in the pthography by asking questions to the friends i had through the photography sites.

There are a lot of photographers and photographs i get influenced. What had traces in me are the images not the names of the photographers. I have always been in the aim to reach those pictures.

There are many talented photographers from Turkey here on dA. Is it popular to be a photographer in your country? Are there some good photo schools? And what about relationships, do you feel any support from others?

After the years 90s, the photograph schools have grown but though to those grown quality education and educators problems haven’t declined. There are a lot of photography clubs and art galleries but, i can’t say that photography is popular in my country. I don’t have any connections with a club nor i had the education about photography. Neither i want to
go. Cause i’m afraid of my point of view would change and become a stearotyped. I have questioned a lot, the only thing is good for my development is to watch and take much photos.

What sort of equipment and software do you use? What is your opinion on post-processing?

I’m using canon eos 5d. I believe that everyone is free to manipulate his/her photo as they wish. It can be exeggerated or not but the effect of to manipulate a photo is unquestionable. You can quadruple a photo’s emotion according your manipulation or you can destroy everything.

Your opinion on : lensbaby, analog photography vs. digital, square format...

Lensbabay gives perfect results in abstracting the places and in the hard light during noon.

I haven’t used an Professional analog camera but i’ve seen the ones using it. I don’t have that patient. That’s why i don’t think that i can use one of an analog cam. Digital cams are benefaction fort he people like me.

I think you can go inside subject very easy with square kadrage and this is one habit of my eyes too. The photos i like are generally square and as i go on watching them i became a person that doesn’t like other type of photos. We would be talking about the round photos, if the photos are liked were round at the beginning.

Tell us your funniest, scariest or maybe most bizarre story from a photoshoot.

We had to climb a hill which was very hard, to get into a forest. When we got into the forest, i had an interesting fear and excite in me. That’s why i couldn’t go ahead much. When i looked at the floors i couldn’t see anything related to human beings. I had stayed in the forest approximately 15 minutes and when i saw a dog running over me, i had tumbled the hill. My
right arm was above because i was holding my cam there. I had succeed the impossible; nothing happened my cam but my arm hurted much i’m afraid of dogs much. The next day, a young who knows the environment well, helped us to climb up the hill
again. As soon as we climbed, we had seen a fox in the mist but it suddenly disappeared. That was a gorgeous forest. It’s stil on my mind and i’ll go there again next year.

What do you do in personal life ?

I’m a civil servant in a public organisation.

What are your plans or visions for your future?

I want to have my own personal exhibition and i have some preparations for it. I want to travel around the world and to go to places never gone before and want to take photos of there. I want to find the most interesting trees of the world. (..hope your dreams will come true =))

Interview with Menoevil

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 6, 2008, 7:19 AM
Interview 01:Menoevil

...we know their beautiful work, but not too much about them.. About their personalities, opinions etc.. So I decided to make an interviews with my favorite photographers here. To promote their work and to find out who they really are =)
Thank you Inane for agreeing to this interview....

Hello. Please introduce yourself.

Hi! I am Sureeyapon Sri-ampai, you may call me "Inane" for short. I am Thai and I was born in 1976. Bangkok is my hometown. I got Bachelor of Fine Arts in major of Photography. For more information >> About me

When did you first become interested in photography? Do you work as a professional photographer or is it just your hobby?

I started out doing photography when I was 15. I was inspired by a girl who made me wanted to take her a good photo, that's it! In 1994, I decided to study in photography. After I got the degree, I was a photographer as my permanent job for 3 years then turned to freelance photographer until now. To me, photography means my serious hobby as well as my occupation.

Do you try to create, display or express something special with your photos?

Let me know first, what did you see in my work? (i think there is always big emphasis on atmosphere... your photos have some "special mood" which really attracts me...) Every photo is different, of course, it depends on emotion, thought and what I feel at the moment. Moreover, it including to my experiences that come with my age. I can state that everything you see in my works, they are what I am, whether they were created by my intension or not. I was not trying to create something difference from others. Because of I have realized that modernism age has been growth rapidly. My work just represents what I want it to be.

What type of photographs do you enjoy taking the most? Why did you chose B/W photographs in square format?

You may notice that in my gallery contains variety styles of photography. You may find from a little lovely flower, landscape, portrait or conceptual work that someone said to me "What such a scary!"

I rarely have color photo, this certainly means I am not that much prefer them. Mostly, my works are Black & White or Monochrome because I think B&W has a far deeper emotional quality that I want it to be. They are charming themselves, driving me to another world, the world of photography.

Why I prefer square format? Honestly, I don't know either. When I was in photography school that I had to print my works from 6X6 film format, I was always crop it to other scale. That's so funny when I think about it. But recently, I'm crushed on this format though I didn't take the photo in 1:1 scale. Maybe this is my perfect format and suited me. (By the way, I didn't ignore other format. Nothing are fixed in my works)

Have you been inspired by any particular artists/photographers?

I give my admiration to many of famous photographers. But my inspiration not only comes from them. I was inspired by the young talent teenagers also. At least, you can find them in deviantArt community. As well as everything surrounding me is my inspiration, what I want to say to you are "Never ever thinking to stop learning".

What sort of equipment and software do you use? What is your opinion on post-processing?

Mostly, I work with Canon 450d and Contax 167MT because they're what I have. If I want to work with large format or medium format, then I will borrow it from my friends or my teachers. About software usage, I'm familiar to Photoshop because it's only one photo editing software that I use.

As I told you lately, I have not much color photo that may because of I don't like something too much realistic. I think it's boring to see everyday color reality. If I want to do my work in color, I don't care whether shade of the model's skin is correct or not. Because what I focus to my work is the story and emotion the most.

As I enjoy to do photo editing on my works, so post-processing is not something new to me.
Actually, we did it for a while in the dark room, right? :P

In the digital times, everything seems to be very easy. The main point is how we use it? This is a kind of presentation or you just do it perfunctorily, after that you will lose the way of photography unintentionally.

What do you do in personal life?

Most of the time, I'm always at my home as I told you I'm a freelancer. Sometimes I work for my clients in e-Learning business as a narrator, having photography class, printing design as well as staying with my best friend "Jingdi" (my Jack
Russell Terrier)

What are your plans or visions for your future?

Firstly, I have to let you know that I decided to work in photography seriously again since I started joining dA and promising myself to devote my life for photography.

The reason of this because of >> :iconcrinaprida:, she taught me to know what is the word "Support" means. She raised me up from the deepest hole and the kindness from somebody that didn't want me to reveal her name. And absolutely to all of my friends here, I'm really appreciated.

If you've looked over my profile already, in the exhibition list, you may notice that my latest exhibition was in 2001. After that I took far off my camera about 4-5 years because I was discouraged by very few number of visitors who are really interested in, moreover they only one group of people who intend to visit the kind of exhibition.

This is very important problem to photography profession in Thailand - here we are lack of knowledge in photography historical besides we have no any support from people in the country enough. :(

Although I saw many good Thai photographers but they were ignored and have no chance to do more.

Presently, I've returned to Thailand photography profession again, surprisingly my works have been consent in good feedback. I'm going to open a photography school in shortly. I will be trying to pass on all of my knowledge and express them how important in the art of photography to young photographers which is the essential point that I've never seen in any photography school. My desirability is to be a part to support the development of photography profession in Thailand. Though it is very tough way to go but it was my wildest dream and I'm chasing for it.

One more of my dream, I wish I will have a few chance to exhibit my works outside the country. It will be great if I can join in international level.

By the way, I'm now reviewing my thought that is it necessary to do an exhibition or not? In term of we are now in the times that any people can reach after the art easily. :O_o:
