doubt

I can't seem to shake the feeling that man was a monk and the creature is either an angel or some other messanger of God. By "he had to know..." I believe it means that he was losing faith and he had to know it still existed, so the creature hanged the man (or maybe he did it himself) so he could see it for himself...
