The day had long since grown dark, and Toni sat with the unhatched Torchic egg. It had been over twelve hours since the others had hatched, and still not a sign of life from the dimly warm egg. She held it gently, scared that she would lose the precious life inside before it even had a chance to see its home. If she couldn't save this egg, what chance did she have at being a real breeder. Breeding wasn't just about raising happy, healthy Pokemon, good for families and trainers alike, but it was also about giving some eggs a second chance at life, one that their Pokemon parents usually couldn't, through the use of medical experienceand training. Something she was beginning to think she wasn't so ready to do. She silently wept over the, now cold, egg in her hands. Cradling it carefully, she begged to her god: "please, let it live".
In a sudden twist of fate, there was a slow movement in the egg. A tiny claw poked itself out, followed by another. It was obvious the tiny fire Pokemon was struggling, but it managed to break open the bottom of the egg with just one foot. The moment it did so, however, it was plain to see that something was very wrong, it had slowly stopped moving. Breaking every rule in the breeders handbook, Toni began to hastily break open the egg, not even worrying about the clear liquid falling out of it and all over her pants. Inside lay a very weak Torchic. She gently lifted it out and checked its breathing; nothing. Laying it down, she started going though what she had studied. She decided it'd be best to try CPR on the small bird. Placing two fingers where his heart was, she lightly pushed on it thirty times before blowing much needed oxygen into his lungs, silently praying in her mind. She repeated this three times before a tiny cough was heard, and she rolled it onto its side so it could cough out all the liquid. Finally, two teary blue eyes looked up at their saviour. Toni gently stroked the chicks head and picked him up in her hands. It was a beautiful little boy. "Barnabas," she said to him softly, "I'll call you Barnabas." The bird Pokemon almost looked as if he nodded before drifting off to sleep.
