Terror on American Rails IV: Dead Man's Cut
Just outside of Gaineswood IN on the Gaineswood & Western, there is a deep rock cut that lays just beyond the town. Although the cut is very ordinary, it has a haunting pass that haunts Gaineswood to this day. Beginning in 1884, the Citizens of Gaineswood asked the government for a Railroad to be built to their town & to other towns in the local area. Starting in 1881, the B&O began to build a branch line to Gaineswood & eventually, Washington. At first, progress went well, the line was averaging over 23 miles a day. But then, just outside of Gaineswood, the construction crew came across a Small hill, blocking the path. To solve this, they decided to blast through it, using a deadly chemical compound, Nitroglyclerin, which was used for a variety of construction & Mining jobs. A group of 3 workers: Joseph Frank, Mike Redridge, & Duke Folsem, prepared a charge of Nitroglycerin for the construction. However, they used too much of it & when they set the charge off, the explosives went off
