Nicknames/Titles: Grace the Gentle
Sexual Orientation: Female
Relationship Status: Widowed
Hair Colour/Style: Grace's hair is a vibrant shade of red. She once kept it longer but for a number of years now has kept her hair trimmed to a shorter, closer to shoulder-length style out of practicality for her work.
Eye Colour: Grace's eyes are a distinct, bright shade of blueish green.
Appearance: Grace looks somewhat younger than she actually is; if you were to guess her age at just a glance you'd probably think she's in her late thirties instead. She's a slim woman, albeit not unhealthily so by any means, who tends to exhibit a friendly smile and overall welcoming air about her. She favours the colour red when it comes to what she wears; this generally means a long-sleeved red shirt and a warm brown skirt that goes down to about her knees. She also frequently wears a slightly tattered black hood. The hood could indeed be additional insulation against the cold, but in truth she mainly wears it so as to keep her hair out of the way when she's working. In more dangerous situations she dons protective leather boots, shoulder guards and boots. Her shoulder and arm guards were partially forged from the rock-hard shed scales of her first dragon, Hammercrunch the Rumblehorn.
Personality: Grace is the kind of woman few people, if anyone, in the right mind could ever dislike. She's a friendly and immensely kind woman who'd never turn away anyone in need of a friend, help or advice. She'll treat anyone who comes through her door as though they're family unless she has very good reason to think otherwise. True to her nickname of 'Grace the Gentle' she is one of the most gentle people around, taking great care in the way she approaches more sensitive problems and proven to be a rather good listener when those who are riled need someone to vent to. Her dragons are treated with immense respect and a lot of affection. Do not mistake Grace's gentle nature and motherly ways for weakness, however... when the time calls for it, Grace is remarkably strong. Though she'd prefer not to fight she's quite willing to do so if the need is great enough. She's deceptively tough for a woman you'd never really think to have such endurance or combative prowess. She's more than willing to fight on the front lines if it means protecting those she holds dear, and can maturely take charge of a situation if things get out of hand.
Hammercrunch (Deceased) - Hammercrunch was Grace's first dragon, a blue-green male Rumblehorn that she helped to free from a Dragon Hunter trap. He was not a young dragon when she met him. Quite the opposite, in fact. Hammercrunch was a notably elderly dragon, so much so that his advanced age had led to his capture in the first place; a healthy, younger Rumblehorn would never have been as easily caught as he had been. Grace took to caring for the old dragon and a little of the energy of his youth returned to him as their bond strengthened. He was typically docile, enjoying travel by ground rather than by air given his age; despite all that, however, he still enjoyed having fun every now and again like a younger individual would. The two became as close as any dragon and rider have ever been, caring for and defending each other time and time again. Eventually, however, Hammercrunch's age caught up to him. After defending Grace and Berk one final time, he knew he could no longer keep up the fight and elected to stay upon Vanaheim, an island where dragons will spend their final days. Not a day goes by wherein Grace doesn't think of Hammercrunch. For all he did for her and for how strong their bond was, she feels it's important to uphold his memory.
Dreadjaw (and siblings) - When Hammercrunch began to behave strangely a couple of months after having bonded with her, Grace did her best to discern what could be causing his distress; his exceptional sense of smell led Grace right to a nest of Whispering Death eggs that had been placed directly beneath Berk. Given there was no mother in sight it was suspected to be an act of sabotage. With no mother to care for the hatchlings and the risk of the baby burrowers running riot on Berk once they hatched out, Grace volunteered to take the nest in and hatch them herself, using her new knowledge of dragon training to ensure she took the best possible care of them. It did not take long for her to form a strong bond with the young Whispering Deaths; it's well known, after all, that Whispering Deaths form notoriously strong bonds with their mothers. Dreadjaw was the first to hatch and the one that grew the closest to Grace. Even in his adulthood he was extraordinarily clingy and affectionate towards her, though tended to be more irritable with others if they got too close. Once he and his siblings were fully-grown Grace found them an island in which they could happily live and not cause destruction around Berk with their burrowing. Able to pick up on when something was wrong with his mother, however, Dreadjaw took it upon himself to migrate back to Berk and return to her, utterly refusing to leave her side while she was in mourning. At present he is her main dragon and a constant companion to her, as clingy as he ever was - they still continue to return to the island she brought him and his siblings to, in order to check in on his brothers and sisters there.
Grimfang - Grimfang is a territorial Screaming Death. He was hatched from one of the Whispering Death clutch that Grace found beneath Berk, taking her by surprise; his egg had indeed been bigger but, not knowing about the existence of Screaming Deaths, she'd simply assumed that he was going to be a larger normal Whispering Death specimen. Much like his smaller Whispering Death siblings he imprinted on Grace quickly and became very strongly attached to her. He was ultimately Dreadjaw's biggest and most assertive competition for Grace's affection and attention, and the biggest competition for the role of 'dominant' hatchling. He moved with the other Whispering Deaths to the island Grace had found for them, wherein his clashes with Dreadjaw for dominance continued (albeit moreso over territory now rather than for Grace herself). Ultimately their clashes have more or less stopped now, with Dreadjaw having moved to live with Grace and thus allowing for Dreadjaw to take up dominance of the selected territory with his siblings, but it has been noted by some that Grimfang does seem to carry a jealous streak; his more aggressive or possessive tendencies tend to arise when Grace returns to check up on him and the others, making sure he gets the most of her affection and sometimes trying to stop her from leaving.
Warcry - Warcry is a blue Triple Stryke and perhaps Grace's most boisterous, head-strong dragon. He earned his name from the fact that he's particularly noisy, roaring and growling loudly to express himself. He's almost at his adult size and fully capable of carrying a human rider on his back, but his behaviour is still more akin to that of an adolescent rather than an adult. His energy levels are quite high and he's a reckless soul who can be somewhat hard to direct. He loves to play but unfortunately can sometimes forget how strong he is when he gets excited. Grace hatched him from an egg that a wild Triple Stryke that she'd befriended, Doomcutter, allowed her to take thanks to the respectful trust the two had built up over their multiple encounters with each other. Warcry's egg was the only one Doomcutter had left; she entrusted it to Grace as she still had her expansive territory to maintain her rule over, and thus would not have been able to give her young the attention and protection they deserved. Hammercrunch served as something of a grounding presence for the feisty Triple Stryke as it grew, and Grimfang became Warcry's most frequent playmate. Warcry now tends to routinely switch between spending time on Grimfang's island and staying with Grace with little to no warning of when he's going to show up or not. As much of a challenge as he was to train, Grace welcomes Warcry whenever he comes back... not like she can miss him, anyway, with a roar as loud as his. More recently Warcry has become quite close with Grace's daughter; her somewhat formal but assertive nature struck a chord with the boisterous dragon and, seeing her as family given her relation to Grace, he tends to treat her with more affection.
Doomcutter - Doomcutter is a particularly aggressive light green female Triple Stryke, and the mother of Warcry. She's a mature specimen who's truly in her prime. She holds a particularly expansive territory that she patrols and protects viciously against intruders. Grace met Doomcutter while venturing out with Hammercrunch, whom protected her with the Triple Stryke moved to attack. Hammercrunch's protection, and an offering of fish, deterred Doomcutter from attacking. Over subsequent encounters she became particularly close with Hammercrunch, seeming to develop a sense of respect for the older dragon and subsequently developing her tolerance of Grace out of respect for the woman's bond with and care of him. Doomcutter's bond with the elderly Rumblehorn would later evolve into one of even deeper understanding and even borderline affection. She was aware, perhaps even more so than Grace, of Hammercrunch's steadily declining health. It played a part in her decision to give Grace her only remaining egg - it was partially done because she couldn't adequately guard her vast territory and give a hatchling the best possible care, but also partially done out of understanding Hammercrunch's concern over leaving Grace unprotected when he eventually passed. When Hammercrunch finally died Doomcutter seemed to show sympathy to Grace, going so far as to allow her to touch her snout. Doomcutter does not stay with Grace and doesn't go out of her way to visit her, but has learned through Hammercrunch to treat her respectfully when they cross paths.
Matriarch - Matriarch is the Elder Sentinel of Vanaheim, a Titan Wing by means of her age and strength. Grace befriended Matriarch when she and Hammercrunch first came across Vanaheim. Grace and her ever-loyal dragon defended the Sentinels, whom had been disoriented and weakened by an outside attack from those who wished to steal from the sacred place, and thereby earned the Elder Sentinel's respect. She was able to pick up on the state of Hammercrunch's health and her instincts drove her to follow them for his sake, even assisting them in combat on a few occasions. Eventually she accompanied them back to Vanaheim; she was witness to Hammercrunch's decision to remain there and pass on. Out of respect for dragon and rider, Matriarch flew Grace back home as she had no other means to get back. Since then, Matriarch has remembered Grace's scent and allows her entry unto Vanaheim should she happen to be in the area or need to pass through, trusting her to not damage the island or harm its dying inhabitants.
History: Grace has lived in Berk throughout her life. She's one of the most renowned bakers the village has and has always enjoyed her work a lot. Her husband, Dagfinn, was a trader who would spend long stretches of time out at sea; whenever he came home Grace would always have a hot meal ready for him in no time. They had two children together. In fact, the children in question were twins - a daughter named Kirsten and a son named Arthur, the latter of whom was born exhibiting albinism. Given she had a family to care for and was content in doing so Grace didn't train her own dragon for a while even after it became commonplace on Berk to do so... that changed, however, after her husband failed to return from one of his trading voyages.
Grace was impacted considerably by her husband's disappearance. She tried not to allow herself to slip too far into depression in the wake of it, for the good of her children, but the emotional weight of it was hard to withstand. She began offering her help to more people around Berk for various different things, as a distraction. One day, however, she came to offer her assistance with the freeing of some captured dragons whose cages had been retrieved from invading Dragon Hunter vessels... and it was there where she met a Rumblehorn, one that had been too old to prevent himself from getting captured. Perhaps he'd exhausted himself trying to protect his kin. Grace found herself feeling great pity for the dragon and it was she who opened its cage. She took him in and cared for him as best she could. As he regained his strength, and as their bond strengthened, Grace gave him a name befitting of a dragon strong enough to survive as long as he had... Hammercrunch.
Their bond would prove beneficial for the both of them in the long run. Hammercrunch, whose will had been dented by his capture and his trust of humans severely wounded, found comfort in someone who cared for him and found renewed purpose in having someone to protect. Grace found comfort and steadily rebuilt her emotional balance with her new dragon's companionship. Her bond with the Rumblehorn would go on to inspire her to bond with more dragons, and that in turn would give rise to her current goal... to prove that even dragons deemed difficult or impossible to train can, at least on a base level, have their respect earned and that subsequently they need not be thought of as mere monsters.
