Description
The blackbuck or Indian antelope (Antilope cervicapra) is, despite the name, not always black - only the adult males have the characteristic dark fur, while the females and young ones are medium brown instead. They are medium-sized antelopes, standing around 80 cm high at the shoulder, and live in India and Nepal - as well as Argentina, Australia, and Texas, where they have been introduced.
They are also a conservation success story. During the 20th century the number of blackbucks dropped from around 80 000 to 8 000 individuals due to hunting, deforestation and habitat degradation, but from the 1970's on intense efforts to save them has brought the population back up to 25 000 - 35 000, which has given them the status of Least Concern.
I've been wanting to draw these a while now, and I'm not satisfied with the drawing at all It is what it is, though.
