Resting leopard

By

Badge Awards

Sometimes we all need a good night's sleep, right?

So, first time in far too long that I have done anything with scratchboard. Last time was... almost a year and a half ago. Most certainly too far ago, in other words - and I noticed I had gotten a bit rusty when I started to work on this piece too. However, I got the hang of it decently soon again, and I'm quite satisfied with the end result. Scratchboard is great for tiny details, so I had quite a lot of fun with all the spots and bark here!

Really beautiful and quite different than your usual technique, yet very recognizable as your style. I also like the pose of the leopard, you definitely conveyed the feeling of a good sleep.

How did you experience drawing 'in reverse' to such an extreme? You have done it with black paper but this takes it to the next level I think.

Thank you so much!

Honestly, I have never had much of a problem with drawing "in reverse". I presume the fact that I started with black paper before scratchboard has helped me quite a bit, though. This does indeed have more contrast than black paper, but it has never been much of a problem.

Of course, you need to plan your piece a bit, though. Not all subjects or reference photos do well here. You'd need something which has quite a bit of contrast, so some things work better than others. Dramatic lighting works well, as well as animals which by default have contrast (think dark markings on light(er) fur).

Oh my goodness! I love it so much. Not sure if I mentioned it but I LOVE BIG CATS! And leopards are my personal favorites!

It looks so realistic and the background is black that's a complex one!

Thank you so much!

Very complex background, yeah :XD: But sometimes simple is better. (Or, admittedly, at least easier.)
