Hello everyone!

Thank you all for your fantastic participation in this workshop! As you know, this was a first workshop of a resurrected group and the level of response is a great encouragement that bringing it back was the right decision. It's good to see the progression of the workshop pattern and this will help for future workshops. As we develop the revived group, we will be revisiting how this group runs, so expect progressional updates over the next few months until we are settled into a well-oiled workshopping machine!

The Workshop of Change

What we will do in these conclusion workshops is review the subject and wrap up how it went. This is a great opportunity for you to reflect on how you did, but also feed back on the prompt and critique.

I felt like change was an apt choice to relaunch this workshop. The focus was really not just about what the change was, but ensuring that the effects are carried on throughout the piece. I have noticed some bad writing habits where writers forget that the plot can affect characters in different ways, or sometimes not affect people at all because they focus too much on one character or one environment. Good writing creates a more dimensional reality and so this exercise was just one way to explore this.

I personally was really impressed with the range of pieces that came out of this workshop. The fact people had even attempted poetry on something I feared was a prosaic orientated prompt proved me wrong! Some people found the task quite challenging, and I think perhaps stipulating that you couldn't explicitly say what the change was became much harder than it seemed at the start. However, there were some pieces that really grasped it such as PaperDart 's Callow's Class and Rieal-Dragonsbane 's Chilli Squid, both pieces I'd recommend worth a read! 

Well done to everyone who did have a go though, it's always a good challenge as a writer to try new things, especially for some who I think felt out of their comfort zone- these things may be bumpy now, but do take the critique on board and work on rewriting them to something else.

Next Workshop

The June workshop shall begin over the weekend.
