Took a ride up to Mount Saint Helens in Washington. This week is the 30th anniversary of the main eruption and the first day the observatory is open this year.

Storm cloud rolling in and some of the blown down trees from the eruption.

my dad hiked up the mountain on the anniversary in 1989. i was born on the anniversary in 1988.

Actually, it seems your instincts were correct - at least to me. The tree echoes; or - like us - stands in awe of; the mountain peek. It feels like the tree and the viewer are sharing a moment. The rules usually work but sometimes it is important to go with your instincts.

I love the bleakness! It's interesting to center the small tree in the foreground while leaving the volcano off-center in the distance. It works for me.

I remember that eruption. Although life is obviously returning, the picture is still rather desolate and bleak.

It seems like the desolate area is getting smaller over the years; it is filling in from the sides.
