"It's addicting, isn't it? Eternal life?"

An entry for a state competition I want to enter!
Was sort of going for a fountain of youth theme, but really I just wanted to draw that pose xD

Enjoy!

I think this is really impressive and I am speechless that you could draw an animal that almost into a reality!

there is nothing to be add or fix I think this is perfect! I love the title too and the concept about this drawing. When I see your drawing and the title, it was a match and also it reminds me about the people who wants to be youth again and imagine if there is still have this water of eternal life, maybe the people around the world might be fighting for it and it will be an endless war to the world.

I really like this. I REALLY like this.

So take everything I am going to say with a grain of sand.

Good things
-Those wings
-Lighting
-I really like the way you used straight lines in this. From the trees, to the water, to the light, it all has a clear cohesion.
- Foreground, midground, background. It is all clearly shown. I understand the perspective in this.
-Daym all that moss

Nit pics
-Clean it up a bit? Like make the tufts of fur more defined.
- Add more definition to the face. Like cheek bones, eye lids, whiskers? idk
- Make the wings not effect the background as much (on the wing extended, behind it the tree is kinda cut off?)

Literally don't change anything though, I'm sure they will love it.

Also the whole idea is on point.

It looks like someone already mentioned this but the Wolf's face looks out of place from the rest of it. It needs more texture, to put it simply ahh.. Otherwise this piece is so beautiful, this blew me away ahh <333

Alright So for this piece I have to say this is wonderful, very detailed, and the lighting is great! I love the idea behind the drawing as well
I think if you need to change anything, is that out of personal preference (so I doubt it will bother many others) I would add more muscle to the base of the wing, rather than it being so thin. I have a tendency to think on a more realistic perspective, so I believe there would have to be more of a 'shoulder' per say to be able to life up the wolf to fly, if that was what you where going for. Another thing is that since the wolf is white, its underwing would probably reflect some of the blue light back down onto the ground around the pool of light, and I know other people have been saying to go  but I almost feel you should add more texture to the ground, and maybe some strands of grass here and there. Also if you wanted to spend the extra time, and the place was supposed to look a little bit more run down I guess would be a way to say it, you could add some vines here and there wrapping around the pillars, or make them seem a bit more rugged, if that was what you where trying to accomplish. I also think there should be a bit more definition of the rocks around the pool but barely, and maybe some more on the ground as well? Not sure if that would drag away from the main focus or not though

Thank you very much for the notes! I was also thinking that I should make the pillars look a bit more worn, maybe add some cracks and stuff. I didn't realize the other notes though, so thanks!

I won't make this an official critique, since I feel I still have a lot to learn myself so there fore have no authority to give you a "real" critique, and I know very little about digital art.
So what I will share here will only be my opinion as a fellow artist who has some experience traditionally drawing animals, especially wolves.

The concept is gorgeous!!

However because of it's almost sketchy style it looks unfinished.
If you are entering this into a competition you should probably find out some things about the judges and what they like. (look at previous picks)
If they like sketchy things this may be a big hit, if they like fleshed out solid work then this may not bode well for the piece.
Judges really are a bit biased.

The undefined messy shape of the legs for example. As someone else mentioned the rocks in the background.
My favorite thing about this piece is the play on light and color, especially highlights on some of the feathers and neck fur where the "sketchy" style looks more deliberate and less unfinished. Gorgeous.

Thank you for the critique! Yeahh, I know I have a really messy style, I'll have to figure out how I can flesh this out without feeling too uncomfortable. Looking at past entries, most of the winners seems to be.... realistic.... humans..... so I might be in a bit of a pickle in relation to that :'D I'll be doing my best though!

Best of luck to you! :) Even if you don't win, having entered in shows looks good on a resume!!

If you do decide to touch it up I am sure you can make it look lovely!

You have other art in your gallery looks finished and deliberate. Like your Lunar New Year piece.
Perhaps use it as a reference? Atleast for the legs, to make them look more solid and defined.

woo! very nice!

comments:
I think someone already mentioned this, but the wolf's muzzle is really smooth compared to the rest of it. Like, the muzzle is usually smoother because the fur grows differently there, but this looks over-airbrushed. the shape of the pool/glowing water doesn't make very much sense given the viewing angle. assuming that an aerial view would show a perfect circle, the side view like this would be an ellipse, not flattened on top and rounded on the bottom like this is. the lower edge of the wolf's wing looks too smooth at parts, and shows the individual feathers at other parts

i can't tell if these things are style choices or not, but lets go:
the water is very opaque, and doesn't reflect light as a liquid would. you have the light beams right there, and one would expect the water to be illuminated like the wolf's head and ears are. also with the light beams; the light shows up on the foreground plants, but the beams don't show in the foreground. As a whole, the picture is really dark and the contrasts are strange. I have to max my screen brightness to be able to see most of the details.the wolf's neck looks long if you keep staring at it, but i don't know wolf anatomy well enough to tell you if its too long or not.

ok. thats it from me. good luck with your contest!

Thank you for all those notes! Yeah, I totally see what you mean. But I'm sort of surprised by the brightness thing, since I actually made the picture with my screen on the lowest brightness. I'm also a bit confused about what you mean when you say the contrasts are strange...
Thanks! Hopefully I'll do alright, since it's state-wide ;w;

i'm not really sure how to articulate it better; you have high contrast for the most part, and it looks fine, but at least on my screen, the high contrast comes at a loss of detail. thats kinda about it? i'm not explaining this very well

Ohh, I think I see what you mean. I think that's because I made the image smaller on here- it looks fine on the original version. It might also be partly dA's fault, since I know someone else who's having a problem with blurry images.

The only thing that really jumped out at me is the difference of shading on the wolf's muzzle compared to every other part of his/her body, like the legs. It seems really smooth in comparison, especially against the chest, which makes it seem a little out of place to me.

The pillars, as well, have a really smooth gradient on them. A little texture to match the rest of the picture might give it just a little more harmony, as they feel a tad disconnected from the rest of the image.

Otherwise, it looks good to me. Good luck with the competition! ^^
