Mutagenic Regression

It was a big shock for me to learn that HR Giger passed away. There's pretty much nothing like his art.

I see a lot of attempts at replicating the style that get the shading, design shapes, and details right, but lack the unexplainable creepiness his works have. Instead of trying to replicate the art style itself, I tried to get that creepy feel with the colors and pose. Also instead of directly copying his designs, I wanted to make something that demonstrated his influence.

» EDIT: Having been asked to provide more detail about the conception of this piece, I will.
This character is Makuta Krika from BIONICLE, a character design that really made an impression on me as a child. He was mistaken for female by many fans upon the first release of his design, and that reminded me of the unsettling gender-ambiguity Giger's Alien has to its appearance. It is of my opinion that this character was inspired at least somewhat by Giger's work, and so I think it fits to draw him here in tribute to THE true originator of biomechanics.

Oh gosh, wow...I really love this piece. The use of pencil and loose line gives it enough life despite the robotic nature. I love that mix of organic and machine. The greyscale keeps the mood so well, and even the textures are implemented in the perfect way. :)

Thanks. Your comment truly means a lot, seeing as all of the components you mentioned are integral to Giger's style... this is the only one of my works that has personal significance for me. Getting it just right is more important than you'll know.

Thanks. He's one of my all-time favorite character designs.

It looks awesome, how long did that take?
Basement-Aviator's avatar
Probably about 30 minutes for the lineart and about an hour to color and texture.

Thats really cool, It takes me weeks to even finish a piece. Is this an original?

It usually takes me weeks to make a good sketch too. This is a rare exception.
If you mean an original character, no, but it is an original take on his appearance and the pose wasn't referenced from anything.

Thats even cooler! I think it is still awesome

love biomechanoid type art.

Interesting take on Krika. Amusingly, we tend to fold our set of him up in a similar fashion.

Thanks. I don't see enough art that makes characters look truly biomechanical...
The pose was just the most logical way I found for him to be eating his own heart.

Reminds me a bit of Cell from DragonBallZ, when he was in his larva form :o , so mysterious and amazing!

That's the idea of this... some mysterious nasty larval thing. Happy you like.
