It's an idea that's never hit home with me in any significant way. Interesting and entertaining as a science fictional concept, sure, but not really plausible. "One day, AI is going to wake up and decide to kill us all!" just seems ridiculous to me. Why does it seem ridiculous? Well, because, why would AI do that? This reflexive, automatic and very common assumption stems from the inability of most people to look at intelligence and consciousness in an objective way. We find it difficult to grasp the concept of a consciousness that is separate, apart and completely different from the one within a human brain, and all of the associated hard-wired evolutionary baggage that comes along with one of those. Seeing others as rivals, and therefore, threats, and then setting out to dominate them and ultimately exterminate them? That's us. That's what we do. Not because we're "evil".
