Queen Chrysalis color study

Testing out possible methods for doing some of the interior illustrations for the Roan RPG. One idea was to use colored paper as the working surface and doing my colored pencil technique on top of that. This was part of the for doing the Sombra 6hr color posted a few days ago. So Sunday I gave it another try, since I had done one FIM villain in this method I decided create a piece of the next nemesis folks will be meeting in my Equestria dreamscape. Queen Chrysalis.

I spent a bit longer on this piece so it looks a little more finished than Sombra. Still I got the whole thing finished in less than eight hours. It is 95% colored pencil on black Canford card stock, with just a touch of white gouache in a few of the highlights.

I hope you like what you see. Please help make more art like this possible by supporting me at Patreon

Edit. and this just made Drawfriends on EQD link

Nice color tones. Meow :3
She is pretty.

She has that kind of beauty that large predators and poisonous snakes often have.
If you remove those canines then her teeths doesn't look like teeths of a predator. Have the canines some function?
Baron-Engel's avatar
They could seen a sign dominance, mine I bigger than yours, there could a whole host of other functions for them.

She looks pretty robotic.
Then again that could work for a realistic version of her :D

Oh yes, good job on the coloring here!  Definitely has a great sinister vibe going for it!

She is not a very pleasant individual.

Damn. I think this is the first Chrysalis I actually find slightly unsettling. Like, the image is subtly creepy in a way that it stays in your brain even after you've stopped looking at it.
She doesn't look like a monster at all, just a mix of venomous insect, snake and apex predator that plays on all those primal fears. She just looks like something that would make you freeze to the spot in terror if you encountered her walking towards you down a murky passageway. A real deer in the headlights effect.
*shudder*

Yeah it was interesting having her in my head for that dream arc.

She's actually a quite beautiful being to dream of, just as long as you can wake up unharmed.

"just a mix of venomous insect, snake and apex predator that plays on all those primal fears."

She most certainly considers herself alpha of her domain. She only views the Princesses as direct threats to her and peoples existence.

It's interesting because Vipera can often do the same thing to some folks.

A little like a crocodile or other lizard, but actually, I kind of like it when Chrysalis is presented more as a lizard-themed being rather than insect-alike... even though there was nothing in the show that would suggest it. Spectacular work with the details, colours and shades. The queen looks both beautiful and intimidating
