Description

These pictures of letters are from "The Book of Ornamental Alphabets, Ancient and Mediæval" collected and engraved by Freeman Gage Delamotte (1814—1862); published in London by Crosby Lockwood and Co., 1879; the images are out of copyright. They were decorative initials (drop cap letters) in manuscripts originally.

Use the download link for a zip file of the letter images; see my Web site (below) for the font:

Please leave a comment if you download the actual font, or if you use it.

I'm experimenting with uploading some of the image I have scanned for my Web site [link] to deviantart, for the use of people here. These images are all without charge for non-commercial use on DeviantArt.

Please comment on the items you used, wth a link to your work, so others can see what you did. I'll also add your deviation to my favourites.

If you make a print or use the images outside deviantart, you can either (1) go barefoot for a whole day, or (2) use the Donate button on my Web site. Or both :D but in either case let me know what you did.

There are usually higher resolution versions of the images on my Web site, and I have even higher resolution scans (usually 2400dpi) for people who want them, free for use on deviantart, but you have to ask (there's a Comment button by each image on my Website, or send me a note here or as =barefootliam with full details). There's no point uploading huge images here, though, most people just want the smaller ones.

It's a lot of work to scan thousands of images and clean them up carefully, so even though the images are out of copyright, and in fact you can do what you like with them, I ask that you understand I can only provide the images with support from others.

Thanks!
