but that was all he had by barbarasobczynska but that was all he had by barbarasobczynska
"but that was all he had, a piece of dried fish(...) That was intercision, and this was a severed child"
[Philip Pullman,"The Golden Compass"]

just a little and mostly digital illustration i did of one of the most horrifying and sad moments of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Matierials" trilogy, the moment when Lyra finds a severed child, Tony Makarios, in the fish house, (i'm not going to give too many details of the story not to spoil it for you who hasn't read it, in fact i'm afraid i already had:blushes::giggle:)

i just felt like drawing this moment of the book, plus i wanted to make some picture for newly-created Philip Pullman's fanclub hoping maybe they would like to re-submit it as the fanclub's picture:fingerscrossed:

You caught the scene exceedingly well. I especially like the grayness with just a little color.
I also LOVE the pupil-less eyes. It enhances the feeling of some sort of ghost there instead of a real boy, and makes the picture more disturbing and wrong. Which is what I imagine the scene to feel like.
Well done!

Oh my god. D: D: D:

I cried even just right now. I'm pretty sure that's the saddest part of any book EVER.

The composition and the fencing looks really nice. (That's what I noticed in the thumb)

I'm rereading it and I'm just at the part where he gets kidnapped. Nooooo, bitch. D:< D:< D:<

Hi master... You must know that Russian animator which I don't remember the name (shame)... He does films in cut outs and there is one with a little mole or something getting lost in the forest. He end up aroud a fire with a bear. There are critics about the second war in it... Anyways, if you remember the name please remind me!

I love HDM, and there are far too little works on them, so I'm realy happy to find one that pictures such a little but powerful moment in the book -and in such an original and beautiful way. Thank you :floating:

Oh my god. ;_; This was already a sad and beautiful picture, but now that I know it's also a scene from HDM, it's even more sad. That really was one of the most miserable moments in the story.

Anyway... this is a stunning illustration. The composition and colors are so beautiful and perfect. You did a really nice job.

yeah, he's supposed to look more than dead than alive  'cause he's still a kind of alive but already without a soul, so will stay alive just a few days, and it's not really life, rather the existence of something like "zombie". i'm very happy that it's visible:nod: have you read "HisDarkMaterials"?
