The Story Behind WHEN THE SOUL TOOK THE REINS
I fell in love with the song "Wildfire" the first time I heard it played on the radio in 1975. The lyrics, written by Michael Martin Murphey and Larry Cansler, in brief tell a haunting magical story about a woman who passes away during a blizzard while out searching for her lost pony, "Wildfire", who has "busted down his stall".
After hearing the song again, an image came to mind of an elderly woman's soul lifting from her body as she peacefully passes away during sleep. Her soul is then seen riding a reddish-brown pony during a blizzard.
Why did "Wildfire" all of the sudden bust down his stall during a blizzard? My thought was that the pony sensed the woman's passing and basically "freaked out" until the woman's soul caught up with him.
To this day, I still love listening to the beautiful melody and the lyrics as sung by Michael Martin Murphey.
ENJOY!
