He may call himself an American but he isn't a true American if he dislikes or hate the National Anthem. This guy makes me sick because so many people died for our freedom to sing the National Anthem. The National Anthem is what unites this country together. Take it away and where is our freedom call? Ronald Regan said and I quoute "Our Anthem is the only one that ends with a question."

O, say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

"Does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave, O[v]er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"

I answer "YES!" to that question. It does and it's the right of every American to sing that song. For without it there is no America.

God Bless America or My Land Tis Of Thee should have been the Anthem.

I actually like "my land tis of thee" and it is basically the same tune and melody of "England's god save the queen" and the anthem of the former German Empire.

Star Spangled Banner seems to glorify war, not a country.

On a bit of a side note - did you watch the Olympics? A lot of national anthems got butchered with the renditions that were played during medal ceremonies.

Ah come on man some songs just grate on the ears or just aren't to everyone's taste - then again we have a worse national anthem written by a talentless hack(Peadar Kearny) who is buried in a paupers grave  - "The Soldiers Song" was originally not meant to be sung since it was at first a poem(a crappy one) which was then translated into Irish Gaelic(so that it sounds like a pair of cats in heat) and then set to a godawfull tune:( (Sad) .  It's perfectly possible to be patriotic while not liking a certain tune.

There's often suggestions to replace the national anthem with "Ireland's Call" or "The Rising of the Moon" which commemorates the 1798 Rebellion when Ireland took an example from the U.S. and tried to bust out for independence.

So a Kearny descendent must have done the renditions for the anthems that were played at the 2016 Olympics.

You could make this your anthem alternatively ;P . I jest.

Cheeky git;) (Wink)  - there are a few decent tunes such as the Rising of the Moon - definitely check out the recording of it done on Youtube by the Irish singer Luke Kelly of the "Dubliners" one part in the song happened in my Granddads home county Wexford.

There's also the tune "St. Patrick's Day" a piece of music associated with the Irish Connaught Rangers regiment, the Royal Irish Regiment and of course the U.S. 7th Cavalry so even Yanks can enjoy it

Sheeeeeeeet. So without that one song America ceases to exist? Fuck man. That's one horrible weakness we have. In all seriousness I don't know who this guy is or why he dislikes the anthem. He could be one of those liberal basket cases and you may be right (I doubtful on this one). Or maybe he just dislikes the song the same way one can dislike Rebecca Black's Friday. It is his preference. I for one like our country but hate our anthem since it just sounds shitty to me. To recap what Americarules said below, Hail Colombia the proposed originally anthem sounds much better and is better at portraying us to the world IMO.

You know our National Anthem use to be "Yankee Doodle" until it was change to the "Star-Spangled Banner." By the way do you personally know when the Star-Spangled Banner was created and why? Did you know that for Scotland the bagpipes were once banned by the British because once the bagpipes were sounding it meant a rally to arms. The song "Danny Boy" touch on that.

Actually it was this though Yankee Doddle Dandy is also famous here. Sometimes "My country tis of thee" was used to which has the same tune as god save the queen. Our anthem was changed to Star Spangled around the 30s.

>The Star Spangled was written during the war of 1812. The writer Francis Scot Key was held captive on a British ship and witnessed the battle. The American flag of the star spangled banner never stopped flying over the fort the British were shelling and he wrote the first drafts after he was let go.

That is interesting. Did you know that a male spider as its reproductive organs on one of its legs?

Meh the star spangled banner is not my favorite National anthem for the U.S to me it's childish compared to the former HAIL TO COLUMBIA! Which talks of peace prosperity and brotherhood it sounded like a real marching/party military theme it was the best anthem we had too bad it didn't stay. Same here actually. I hate the Star Spangled banner but that's because of the melody, tune, and lyrics. Not because I dislike the country. We just have a crappy anthem. Hail Columbia is more upbeat, happy, and portrays our country better.

Exactly plus it talks about the sacrifices made by our soldiers during the revolution and how George Washington lead us to victory.

I know. Anthems are usually supposed to talk about what that country is about, or what they value, or how they were made. That song is basically a summary of the revolution, George Washington's victory, and about freedom and shit like that.

Ah yes which makes Hail to Columbia very unique for it's time with it's talks of peace brotherhood and equality war Heroes and a united people.

I feel like things are getting spookier by the day.

I actually hate the anthem myself despite being a nationalists. It's not the country I hate. I just dislike the song, the lyrics, the melody, the tune. I like our original one better: hail Columbia.

Good one, Daniel!

I saw the story this morning and had to ask, "Who the Hell is John Legend???"
and
"Why would anyone care about his opinion?"

You know what they say about opinions, "They're like assholes, everybody's got one."
Pardon my French...;)
