The Clover Patch by balaa The Clover Patch by balaa
Well this is actually a piece I have had sitting on my computer for well over a month now. I made the mistake of starting with the lion before figuring out a background for the piece....so it turned into nothing short of one hurdle after another. The initial idea I actually got while browsing google for pictures of something (what I don't even recall precisely). But I came across this photo of a moth and for whatever reason the second I saw its wings I thought "LION Eyes!"...and the sketch went on from there. The actual moth species is called Polyphemus and hails from somewhere in Virginia (correct me if I am wrong). What got the idea going even more was realizing that both moths and Lion's have one similarity..they are both predominantly nocturnal. And for that matter I always thought moths to be underappreciated, unlike cousin butterfly. I have always thought them extremely beautiful, even the common ones that we have around here. I have several ideas along this line for future pieces (ie white tiger, black tiger, red panda(as per my friend's request).

Now to explain the background and choice of colors. At first I was going with a color scheme of predominantly reds oranges and the like which matched the moth nicely. But what I didn't like and what several of my friends pointed out was it made the critter blend far too much in the background and distracted from him too much. I agreed and decided the background had to contrast from the moth lion in order for the cub to stand out. After much tinkering around I went with soft pale blues( I think I stumbled across a daily dev here on deviant of a butterfly against a pale blue/white backdrop and it just clicked!). As for the clover patch, though very subtle and blurred..it was intended to give the scene some sense of scale, ie the cub being life size to a real moth. As for the sparkles, after I finished the rest of the piece, it just seemed a tiny bit lacking..so I threw those in, but if folks prefer the piece without them, I can subtitute the version without.

I think that is all, enjoy folks! Oh and critique is discouraged because I don't want to work on this piece anymore...any small constructive suggestions are of course welcome.

Tools: mechanical pencil for original sketch, photoshop for final version
Size: zpprox 5000 x 5000 pixels at 250 dpi.
Time taken: your guess is as good as mine. At leaaasssst 20-30 hours.
Print availability: yes, limited edition signed large prints to be available at a future date.

*** Please respect the work and time put into the piece and FULL VIEW! Thanks in advance :)***

Edit: well looks like I had to start watermarking, I really did not want it to come to this but I had no choice, I am tired of folks ripping my stuff.

This piece expresses calmness, joy, tranquility, and a little bit of mystery. I love how the moth-lion looks at us as if to invite us to come along with him. I Love the moth wings. I've seen plenty of the polyphemus moths that you've mentioned here where I live. I live on the East Coast and I'm a musician.

Hi Balaa,

This is absolutely gorgeous! I am extremely sorry to hear about people ripping off your work. That is just not cool. Neither is it to have friends take advantage of you either. So in one way or another I can relate to you. Anyways, this is the most unique and beautifully well captivating piece of work I have ever seen. Your color scheme is truly lovely. Great work and hope everything works out for you.

Best wishes!

Glad to see you have the watermark up. I know I saw this image before, but on photobucket. I believe the only difference is they likely used some cheap/free effect to change the colouring of the background. Sadly, I cannot recall where exactly on photobucket. It was so long ago.

Have you given rights for this app to use your work because I’ve found this piece in an app called “Cool Wallpapers HD & Retina Free.” After typing “Lion” in the search, on the 1st page. Might be good if you check the rest, just in case they’ve taken more. Hope I helped, I don’t like people taking advantage of others work =/

Love the picture btw, thats why I recognised it =)

Hello balaa, you don't know me because this is the very first time I've seen your work and have since then fav+ watched you now. I wanted to ask permission, (since this creature mix of a lion/month was your idea) if I can credit you and personally myself draw these, 'moth lions'.

I'm fascinated with the idea/creature and I just recently made a journal entry on my account about the fact that everyone has a talent/topic they're amazing at drawing, (whether it be horses, wolves, photography, ect), and I was hoping that I could practice and draw various other lion-moths following this deviation as a reference?

I saw this last night and while I was in bed I thought about how much I wanted to sketch and practice the lion anatomy, (griffins, sky-lions, chimeras, ect. ect. anything but the lion king) and the fact that you added a moth, (my favorite bug as well!) Was just too good to be true!

I'd love to draw this race of creature you came up with and make some characters for various novels I have, is that alright? If not, that's perfectly understandable!

The idea is mindblowing to me and the finished result is sooo beautiful!

I can understand why a certain kind of idiots wouldn't be able to stop themselves from stealing an amazing piece like this one, so even if I wish I could see the picture without the watermark, I totally get why you've started doing it. It's a shame, but not much to do about it. :(
