Sooo I got Sonic Forces right around when it came out and well... It was alright 
I mean don't get me wrong the game looks great, the Cinematics both in-game and in Pre Rendered Scenes are pretty damn good looking for a Sonic game.
So why do I say it's "alright?" well 3 big reasons:
1: The levels are way too short, almost no level ends off feeling complete
there were so many times the level started to build you up like the next big thrill or challenge was just around the corner only to have a End goal smack you in the face. 
2: It didn't bother as much as some other people but (Spoilers) Chaos is just... there, and so is Shadow they act as eye candy but never amount to anything, Chaos in particular never amounts to anything aside from being a stock villain in the intro and then reduced to mere fodder as thousands of all the big bads rush the resistance at the end of the game, posing little to no threat and is utterly pointless to the plot.
3: The voice acting annoys me...
this might be a personal gripe buuut... -ahem-
IF A CHARACTER IS FIGHTING IN A WAR THEY DON'T TALK LIKE THERE IS NO WAR!!!
Seriously for the most part with a few exceptions all of the characters show little to no emotion for the situation they are in, that or they try way too hard. -cough- Knuckles -cough- Hell they say that Sonic has been TORTURED for crying out loud! But everyone is just talking like that happens every week.
Silver lining though if you want voice acting that takes the story seriously with you know EMOTION! Then if you don't mind subtitles the Japanese dubbing is pretty damn good I'd recommend it over the English. Nothing against them though, the Japanese just did it way better. 
(4 classic sonic plays bad and infinite's backstory is lame)
But all those grievances aside I really kinda enjoyed it, the modern sonic plays fairly well and the create your own character part of the game was probably my favorite part! I never really thought I'd ever make a Sonic OC and now I've made 3 without names.
All in all I had fun for the most part. Is it worth 40$? HELL NO. But I can't say it's worthy of so much hate I've been seeing it get.
It feels like another potential gem that could use more polish and touch ups, It just got rushed.

To be honest, the Sonic OC is the only thing about Sonic Forces that makes me want to play it. I'm a sucker for character customization, so naturally I think I'll have a lot of fun with this feature.
And it seems like a lot of people feel the same way, considering what I've heard about this game. Most people seem to be praising the custom hero creation.
The gameplay and level design seems rather uninteresting, sadly. Not necessarily horrible or anything, but just boring... And that's honestly the impression I had of it ever since the first gameplay was shown. So when the game released and the levels proved to be underwhelming, I was disappointed but not surprised.
