Tribute to Equilibrium by Azuis

Watch Mature Content
/ ©2004-2018 Azuis
This is something I made in tribute to a great but rather widely unheard of movie called Equilibrium.

Originally made for the EZA Flash Tournament, I've upgraded it to my revamped Newgrounds version.

If you haven't seen the movie yet I strongly suggest borrowing it, since it's a much longer watch than my humble 30 second flash thing here. ^_-

Warning: Contains blood and death.

Hehe thank you! :D I had originally planned to have a full one on one gun-kata fight at the end like in the movie but I ran out of time by that stage. Also, if I did make it it would still have been much quicker. ^_^

I do particularly like the "bubble" effect when the cursor passes over the man at the end. That's cool.

The first two cutscenes are timed perfectly. (walking in, throwing the grenades) Don't change them a bit.
The fourth (?) cutscene where the man spins around could use some more inbetweens to soften it. Lacking that, a motion blur effect using alpha settings to graphic symbols or a blur effect (I don't know how to explain ... like motion lines, soften fill edges, or simply a ragged edge. If you look through mine and Neverm0reX's animations, you'll see the occasional use of it.)

I would like to say here that I like your attention to detail where the men around him respond in surprise. That is a very nice touch.

There is one scene where he criss-crosses the guns and fires ... his hands should sway and give a little. It's quite obvious that it's a motion tween. It looks too stiff, needs more flexibility.

The one seen where the blonde man lifts his head has the "wobble" effect ... I sat there, and pushed "forward" by left-clicking on the Flash to pinpoint the error for you.

His body and neck don't move as he lifts his head. Baaad. Also, the shading changes too much half-way through, and you're not keeping your lines consistent. Be more careful with your onion-skinning.

The part where he's running ... his upper body and head don't move enough. Both running and walking entail an up-and-down motion. I suggest looking at a tutorial. [link] I'm not perfect, myself, about them but I'm improving.

The part where the guy is shot ... he suddenly just freezes as he slides down the screen. You really should have shown him reeling all the way backwards onto the floor. It's really, really obvious that it doesn't look right.

Yay thanks for the comments! ^_^ Most of those I did pick up on, but I ran out of time to do something more proper (made against competition deadline) ... some I wouldn't fix anyway due to my laziness - like the crossover guns thing, and probably the running thing I would have let slide as well. :P

I would have liked to do a much bloodier and more detailed gore bit at the end but time constrictions again made me just slide the blonde dude down. My original plan was to blast him against the wall and keep shooting at him while he was pinned until the clip in the autorifle ran out, however that's not what happened. As it is the person running the contest let his 8 yr old sister watch all the entries, and she felt sick after my one - she doesn't react well to blood. :(

Now the part where the blonde guy lifts his head I knew the light fluctuated too much but I found it really difficult to keep it consistent. X_x What is "onionskinning"? How I get color shades on my characters currently is I draw them then for each pose thingy I draw extra hairlines to separate my fills (which are mostly removed afterwards). I must admit I probably wouldn't have moved the body or neck in that scene though. =P

Anyway, stuff like this is really helpful. Please keep them coming! (hopefully I remember them though! ^_^)

I know it is, I ate it up when I was first animating. I actually harassed more experienced animators until they finally caved in, LOL. Funny enough, that's how I first met Neverm0reX, my current partner in a mutual Flash project.

Some people don't respond well at all to criticism, so they don't improve very fast ... others do and improve by leaps and bounds rapidly. I'm in the "rapid" category: I've only been working Flash for 4-5 years now.

Onion-skinning ... is that little icon where you click it and it shows either outlines or transparent images of the frames before and after the ones you're drawing. See also: [link]

Okay... never used onion skinning before. I'll try it out. :) What I normally do is just copy an exact duplicate of the last frame into the current frame and then modify it (sometimes entirely). ^_^

Aaand.. I'm probably one of those people who won't improve quickly. Heheheh. =P

Oooh, you *have* improved. Excellent mix of motion tweens and frame-by-frameing here ... discard my earlier suggestion.

Now all you need to improve on is your timing, the integrity between frames (otherwise known as the "jerk" or "wobble" effect). For example, the walk at the end is a little too slow, should go faster. I would suggest killing the motion tween, and placing each cel carefully so that you don't get that terrible sliding effect.

Let me watch again, and see if I can't give you a few more pointers from the eye of an experienced animator.

Also, I know how it feels to suddenly be hit over the head with a whole bunch of C&C. Try not to react too strongly or defensively, and just chew on it a while before replying. If you're already aware of all your errors and simply do not wish to fix them, you do not have to. I'm merely stating them in case you did not notice them and/or did not know how to fix them.

Very fast paced with some keen fbf action. I like it!

Its funny that the "boss" switched from 2 handed to one handed and that the main character treated the shotgun like a pistol. ;-)

Don't think like that Wonchop, the judges at the EZA tourney could be looking for humor over action! Remember everyone has their own opinion on things, so you should have faith in your talent. :)
