Celestia had high hopes for that night to go well. She would hope that after 1000 years she would be easily reunited with her sister just in time to celebrate the raising of the sun. And to hopefully start a new reign together.
But unlike her fantasies Nightmare Moon emerged still bitter and ready to fight Celestia the minute she escaped from the moon.

Celestia thought her sister had control over Nightmare Moon. But what she didn't know was that Nightmare Moon has long since immobilized the original Luna and taken full control over her being. One could say that Nightmare Moon had consumed any presence of Luna.

But Celestia didn't know that, she thought if she could simply reason with her sister, instead of rushing in and fighting her like in the past: Nightmare Moon would disappear.

The moment Nightmare Moon saw Celestia's unwillingness to harm her: something terrifying inside Nightmare Moon started to bear fruit.

She felt the presence of Luna emerging slowly and weakening her control.

Nightmare Moon believed herself to be a different person to Luna. Instead of being just a reflection of Luna's jealousy and anger; she became her own person. Able to feel, able to hope and desire... And after 1000 years she didn't want to disappear. She didn't care about Luna's own feelings anymore, the thought of Luna gaining back control and 'Nightmare Moon' vanishing drove her into ending the reunion quickly.

And what would be the perfect way to get back at Celestia for imprisoning her for a 1000 years?

After swiftly imprisoning Celestia with little to no defiance from the alicorn. Nightmare Moon made plans in her heart to find a way to completely unbind herself from Luna. Maybe as a show of gratitude for being her host for 1000 years: she'll imprison Luna in the sun with her sister.
