CURP is an acronym for Clave Unico de Registracion de Población (Population Registry Code). In Mexico, the CURP is an 18-character alphanumeric code required by all citizens who wish to work, go to school, or pay taxes. CURP has been a simple document in use since 1996, but this year the government has introduced a CURP card that includes a photograph, fingerprint, iris scan and voice sample. The government has mandated that all mobile phone numbers be linked to a valid CURP card by June 30. Failure to do so will result in the phone service being discontinued until the number is registered. The dictate is being met with great resistance, and only 18% of the phones have been registered to date.
