The Maenad
The Maenad
One autumn evening, I was at a linguistics conference at the University of Pennsylvania. I was lecturing on the history of the Gaelic language, including its impact on modern Welsh. I was disappointed by the low audience turnout to my presentation. A few esteemed professors were there, people who held doctoral degrees in Latin, Old Norse, Sanskrit and who knows what else. They were all as ancient looking as the languages they studied. Seeing them made me feel glad that I got my PHD in linguistics while still young. I would have been the youngest one there, if it weren’t for the undergraduate student who had walked in. After the lecture, she found me and introduced herself as Elaine.
“That’s a good Gaelic name, one that means beautiful,” I told her. I was just pointing out a fact, being a professor of linguistics. It’s not like I was flirting or anything. In fact I found her annoying and was really hoping she would leave me alone so that I could

Axial Age Adventurers
Zarathustra was starting to doubt Plato’s driving skills. “Is this the right place?” he asked.
“Well it’s not supposed to be a sprawling metropolis like Athens,” said Plato, checking Google Maps on his iPhone X.
Confucius cautiously emerged out of the car, careful not to trip on his silk robes.
Meanwhile, the Buddha felt right at home. He was used to meditating in the forest and calmly settled under a tall cedar tree.
“No wonder you got invaded by the Persians. Give me that map!” Zarathustra said. Of course he had lived long before the Persian wars, but the four ancient philosophers had spent the last few days getting to know each other ever since they had been plunged into the modern world. This included learning the history of each other’s civilizations. “Wait…” he squinted at the screen, “this really is what they call the native reserve. Our trade routes never reached this continent.”

Shitty love poem #476 no wonder I got friendzoned
I fell in love with your long black hair
That framed such a regal face
You let it trail behind you without a care
And I felt blessed to behold such beauty and grace
I fell in love with your long black hair
It was the reason why I woke up in the morning
With my heart full of longing
And only thoughts of you to keep me warm
I tried to capture the wisps of your dark beauty
Every night I returned to your arms
But by day you always managed to evade me
I fell in love with your long black hair
Yet I knew I could never possess your spirit’s flair

School
Every day, in this stifling room I must sit,
wasting away, yet knowing my life depends on it,
the room is a prison, and the air baneful,
my knowledge of the subject at hand, abysmal,
it passes over me,
and in my sleep-deprived state,
I make countless mistakes on a test on which my future is staked
and even when the bell pierces through the numbness of my mind
I am not free,
for then I must return to my dreary home to show them the number they anxiously await,
the number, my score,
because all I ever will be is a number, nothing more
I'll read deep into the night until the words are seared into my soul,
until my eyes are bloodshot and the words no longer register in my brain,
and every day I'll wake up to do it all again

The Gift of the Bear
The way desert nomads are so fond of their land amazes me. I mean, I’m an adventurer, and I’ve seen many people in my time. They lived in forests, in the mountains, or by the sea and they all loved their land and thought their homes were the most beautiful places on earth. But how could anyone love the desert? It baffled me, for it seemed like the desert was where all of humanity’s hopes and dreams died. Yet the nomadic tribes of the Sahara think it’s great.
I felt lucky to be in an air-conditioned room in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. I was pouring over the scrolls that the headman of the Imraguen tribe had given to me earlier that day. They were from the medieval trading outpost called Chinguetti, a city with the same allure as Timbuktu. The writings were in Arabic, and because the dialect was so antiquated and the cursed sands had faded the flowing script to the point of being nearly impossible to discern, they had called me, a world-renowned linguis

He's Cultured
When I got back to my apartment, I flung the door open and released the tempestuous fit of rage that had been brewing in me for the past hour.
“Die a thousand deaths, you treacherous Anglophile!” I roared.
My eyes fell on my miserable diary on the couch, with dumb inspirational quotes printed on its cover. It was just lying there, all vulnerable to my hideous anger. I flipped to the most recent entry, a grotesque love poem that I had written a few hours ago just before I set off on that day’s terrible endeavor. I tore it out and ripped it into a thousand shreds.
“There! Now there isn’t a trace in the world left of these miserable words and I can die alone in peace.” I said. I caught a reflection of myself in the mirror and felt disgusted. What I saw there wasn’t me. I tore off the expensive jewelry I was wearing and undid my fancy ridiculous hairstyle to let down my plain, short brown hair.
“There. That’s better.” I said.

The Hunter in the Cedar Grove
Sedna knew something was wrong from the moment she woke up and the light of the sun entered through the door of her low, dome-shaped dwelling. She had been asleep on the floor, wrapped in a beaver skin blanket before she became aware of the fact that she was all alone. Where were her brothers and sisters?
She crept towards the entrance of her portable home and realized she didn’t hear the morning chatter of the other band members. Panicking, her heart started to race like the quivering aspens in the distance with their leaves agitated by the wind. She felt an instinctive restlessness stirring inside her as the silence was broken by songbirds singing and flies buzzing. A cool summer morning breeze blew through Sedna’s long black hair.
Finally, the young woman calmed down as she saw her brother approaching from a distance.
“Atka! Are you on your way to the creek? Don’t forget your pronged spear.” She reminded him. Then her face fell as Atka came closer and s

The Axolotl and the Emperor
The axolotl never failed to amaze Ce. He would often converse with the strange salamander-like creature from the swamps of Mexico for hours at a time. As it swam around in its tank, it seemed to have the enlightened expression of a wise, ancient sage. Ce observed it as it swam among the new aquarium decorations he bought, which were miniature Mexican pyramids.
“Do you like your new aquarium decorations, Cipactli? The one you’re investigating right now is supposed to look like the pyramid of Cholula. It has the greatest volume of any pyramid in the world” Ce told the creature.
The axolotl turned from its inspection of the ruin to face Ce. It seemed to give an enigmatic smile.
Ce sighed. “It’s really sad how the Spaniards built a church on top of it. Maybe I can get rid of the church when I’m crowned as huey tlatoani of All the Land Between the Waters today. Or maybe I should keep it as a holocaust museum to inform outsiders of what happened to our peo
