Last Monday we had a Derecho wind storm here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa we had 140 MPH winds sustained for over an hour. Damage is massive, 2800 power poles snapped in half, 68 % of our trees were torn down, power was out to over 120,000 locations. The commander of the national guard company sent to Cedar Rapids said it is worse than any war-torn areas he has ever seen. We are clearing out trees and starting repairs on our area. Estimates are that the recovery time will stretch into 2023 or longer for everything. Still, people in our area are working together and helping one another. People are bringing the repair crews food and water as they work to fix the power lines. The red cross arrived with one truck a full week after the storm, still, we are glad to have them.
People are amazingly resilient, with no real complaints from lots of people here who have every right to do so, I am amazed by them. I have never really worried about these things as they seem to happen more and more with the global climate changes going on. But we still move on as a species. We adapt and we move on, that is the way of things.
I am proud to see the local people here react as they have and proud to see people bonding together for a common cause. The real tragedy is still to come in the form of higher food prices as 70% of the Corn and Soybean crops are estimated to be lost and most of the grain storage facilities were wrecked by the storm. I would like to hope that everything can return to normal soon, but I have a feeling that these sorts of events will become the new normal after a few years.
Anyway stay safe everyone!!
I am working on the faves that I have received and will be working through the wonderful works that you have posted today. Since going to the new system it has been difficult to tell how many works are in my queue. Usually a few thousand each week so it gets harder with each passing day. Still the process of liking things is much faster and I should be able to get to all of them soon.
Meanwhile, I hope that all of you are well and taking care of yourselves. Stay safe!!
Yes they are
Not they are not
