Salem replaces Rhodes in the Cinder's backstory
Honestly though I can understand a bit of hatred towards Cinder in the canon, I think people exaggerated with this background, calling it bad just because it didn't make you "empathize" with her, or that it was trying to "justify" Cinder, when at least for me it doesn't seem at all, a villain can have a tragic past and still be a terrible person, like Batman's Penguin.
My only problem with Cinder's past really is Rhodes, I feel like it just creates more plot holes that a hunter decides to train an enslaved girl thinking she wouldn't use those abilities against her oppressors, instead of doing... I don't know, anything else to help her. In that sense I think it was a wasted opportunity to tell us what people really want to know about the character and that is why she joined Salem in the first place, and as I put it in the title of this post, to also reference the original story with Salem being a "Fairy Godmother" to Cinder, but not guiding her down a good path.
I hope you liked it and let me know what you think.

One of my favorite authors, Author Nicholas Drew, certainly took advantage of the fact that Salem and Cinder Fall's story was a reference to Cinderella.
